Elliott scored his second touchdown of the game at 6:02 of the third quarter on an eight-yard pass from senior quarterback RJ Welsh. The final scoring of the third quarter came on a 29-yard interception return by junior linebacker Paul Gans and SJU led 56-9.

The only scoring of the fourth quarter came at the 6:51 mark as junior tight end Justin Winkels caught an 18-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Dana Schleicher.

SJU outgained Augsburg 426 to 260 in total offense. Augsburg had seven turnovers -- six interceptions and one fumble -- in the game. The Johnnies passed for 333 yards and rushed for 103 yards, while Augsburg had a balanced offensive attack with 133 yards rushing and 127 yards passing. The Auggies held an 11-minute advantage in time of possession. The Johnnies scored seven touchdowns in a span of eight possessions during the first, second and third quarters.

Individually, Gans tied a SJU school record with four interceptions and had 139 yards on interceptions returns. Elliott caught seven passes for 121 yards and two touchdowns. Elliott's two touchdown receptions gives him 51 career touchdown receptions (58 career touchdown receptions in all games), which moved him past Jerry Rice into a fourth-place tie on the NCAA all-divisions career touchdown reception list. Elliott has also caught a pass in 48 consecutive games.

Breen had four catches for 88 yards and one touchdown. Keating was 14-of-23 passing for 266 yards and three touchdown passes. Keating's three touchdown passes moves him into third on SJU's all-time career list with 53 touchdown passes. Theis carried the ball eight times for 39 yards and two touchdowns. Senior end Jeremy Hood led the Johnnie defensive unit with 10 total tackles, and 2.5 tackles for loss. Besides the four interceptions, Gans also recorded nine total tackles.

For Augsburg, George was 9-of-19 passing for 115 yards, one touchdown and five interceptions. Freshman tight end Andrew Neumann had five receptions for 41 yards and Smith collected four catches for 67 yards and one touchdown. Sophomore halfback Steve Houser had 15 carries for 46 yards and senior fullback Ben Paul had 12 carries for 38 yards. Defensively for the Auggies, senior linebacker Brandon Fox had 10 total tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss. Sophomore cornerback Ricky Schreier had seven total tackles and senior linebacker Jon Kozitza added six total tackles.

SJU is now 6-0 overall and 5-0 in the MIAC. The Johnnies have won 21 straight MIAC games and 16 straight home games, dating back to the 2001 season. Augsburg fell to 3-4 overall and 2-3 in the MIAC. The Johnnies lead the all-time series with the Auggies 56-7-2 since 1926 and 45-4-1 during the John Gagliardi era at SJU.

With the win, SJU head coach Gagliardi continues his "March to History" as he gained career win number 406 in his 55-year career. Gagliardi is now three wins away from setting the all-time career win record, currently held by former Grambling State coach Eddie Robinson.

Both teams return to action next Saturday (10/25) at 1 p.m., with Augsburg hosting St. Thomas at Edor Nelson Field and St. John's hosting Concordia-Moorhead at Clemens Stadium.

LAST YEAR: Kent Crowley rushed 27 times for 131 yards and three first-half touchdowns, leading St. John's to a 35-7 win over Augsburg on Oct. 19, 2002 at Augsburg's Edor Nelson Field. St. John's outgained Augsburg by a 423-194 margin, while Augsburg was limited to just 35 rushing yards in the game. Ross Denne threw for 251 yards, completing 21-of-37 passes. Lee Clintsman caught five passes for 103 yards and a touchdown.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Johnnies scored three touchdowns in the second period to take a 21-7 halftime lead. St. John's outgained Augsburg 151-58 in the deciding period, taking advantage of two interceptions to score on all three of its second-quarter possessions. On the first play of the second quarter, Jason Pflipsen intercepted Augsburg quarterback Dave Fransen at the St. John's 48-yard line. Four plays later, Crowley scored his first touchdown on a 27-yard run.

Augsburg turned in its best drive of the day on the ensuing drive, going eight plays and 58 yards for its only score of the afternoon, a 12-yard pass from Fransen to Yarzue Slowon. A Blake Elliott 24-yard kickoff return gave the Johnnies good field position at their own 38, and the Johnnies put on their longest drive of the afternoon, a 14-play, 62-yard drive to give Crowley his second TD of the game, a three-yard run with 3:48 left in the quarter. Pflipsen claimed his second pickoff of the quarter with 2:42 left, giving the Johnnies the ball at the Augsburg 37. A fourth-down pass from Denne to Clintsman gave the ball at the Augsburg 17, and on the next play, Crowley rushed 17 yards for the touchown with 58 seconds left in the half.

The Auggies could not mount a comeback in the second half, as five of its seven second-half drives ended in punts, with the other two ending in an iterception and a turnover on downs. Meanwhile, the Johnnies scored twice in the fourth quarter to put the game away. After an interception by Cole Deibele , the Johnnies marched 58 yards in seven plays, culminating in a Denne one-yard scoring run on the first play of the fourth quarter. Clintsman caught a 14-yard TD pass from Denne with 5:22 left to cap the Johnnie scoring.

Elliott was limited to just 29 receiving yards on six catches, but had 90 return yards (41 on punts, 49 on kickoffs). Josh Nelson caught three passes for 48 yards. Augsburg's Fransen threw for 115 yards, completing 13-of-30 passes with a TD and three interceptions. Tony George finished the game at quarterback, completing two passes for 44 yards. Luke Wright caught four passes for 70 yards, while Slowon caught three passes for 25 yards and Sammy Gross had two catches for 32 yards.

Cam McCambridge led the Johnnie defense with 14 tackles (six solo), while Jeremy Hood had 10 tackles (four solo), including two for loss. Josh Miller had a quarterback sack. Augsburg's defense was led by Mitch Theisen, who had 13 tackles (one solo). Brandon Fox had 12 tackles (six solo), and Jordan Hastings had 11 tackles (four solo). Kyle Koch had a quarterback sack, and Major Williams and Jim Gunderson had interceptions, with Williams adding three pass deflections.

OSBERG NOW AUGSBURG'S ALL-TIME FOOTBALL VICTORY LEADER: Augsburg head coach Jack Osberg has been the architect of a rebirth of Augsburg College football since he was named head coach in 1991. Now, Osberg can add the mantle of the winningest coach in school history to his resume. With Augsburg's 31-24 win over St. Olaf on Sept. 20, Osberg passed his former coach, Edor Nelson, to claim his 57th career win, one more than Nelson on the all-time football win list. Osberg, a 1962 Augsburg graduate, is in his 13th season with the Auggies and now has a 58-69 career record. Nelson went 56-118-10 from 1947-69. Osberg also has the most MIAC wins (46-64-0) of any Augsburg coach, and his career overall winning percentage of .457 is second-best in school history. Bill Caris (1972-75) was 19-19, for the school's best winning percentage of .500. Osberg has the third-longest tenure among current MIAC football coaches, behind St. John's John Gagliardi (55th season, 51st at St. John's in 2003) and Bethel's Steve Johnson (15th season).

INJURY BUG BITING THE AUGGIES -- Augsburg has had the injury bug bite over the past several weeks with an already-thin roster. Perhaps the biggest injury has been to starting quarterback Tony George (So., Blaine, Minn.), who suffered sprained ankle injuries in consecutive games -- a loss at Gustavus and in the win over Carleton. He did not start against Concordia-Moorhead last week, but played a couple of snaps in the second quarter. Troy Deden (Fr., Northfield, Minn.) had his first start at quarterback against the Cobbers. This week's choice of quarterback will be a game-time decision between George and Deden.

Wide receiver Shawn Johnson (Jr., Faribault, Minn.) was lost for the season with a broken collarbone in the Gustavus game. Lost for the season two weeks ago against Carleton was linebacker Kyle Voelz (Jr., Morgan, Minn./Cedar Mountain HS), who suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). Running back Pat Lofboom (Jr., Stillwater, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) was also lost for the season with an injury earlier this year.

Defensive lineman Chike Ochiagha (Jr., Savage, Minn./Holy Angels HS) will not play on Saturday, due to an ankle injury. Offensive lineman Lowery Smith (So., Farmington, Minn.) is questionable with a sprained ankle.

SCHLIEMAN, CULLEN AMONG NATION'S LEADERS: Augsburg kicker/punter Nick Schlieman (So., Burnsville, Minn.) and defensive lineman Joe Cullen (Jr., Coon Rapids, Minn.) are all among the nation's leaders in several categories in NCAA Division III football, according to statistics released after the sixth week of games.

Schlieman ranks seventh nationally in punting, with a 41.9-yard average. In the season-opener against Jamestown (N.D.), Schlieman had eight punts for 419 yards (52.4-yard average), including a school-record 74-yard punt on Augsburg's first drive. He also had punts of 68, 59 and 52 yards in the game to earn both MIAC and Division III National (Don Hansen's Football Gazette) Special Teams Player of the Week honors.

Cullen ranks 25th nationally in sacks, with 6.0 through six games, a 1.0 sacks-per-game average.

St. John's receiver Blake Elliott is ranked nationally in five categories. He is second in receptions per game (9.2), fifth in all-purpose yards (208.0 yards per game), 25th in scoring (10.4 points per game), 26th in receiving yards per game (101.8) and 31st in punt returns (13.1 yards per punt). Jeremy Hood is ranked eighth nationally in sacks (1.5 per game), and Ryan Keating is ranked 15th in passing efficiency (151.7 quarterback rating).

As a team, St. John's ranks fourth nationally in total offense (482.0 yards per game), fourth in scoring offense (44.4 points per game), fifth in scoring defense (7.2 points per game), seventh in total defense (215.6 yards per game), 11th in rushing defense (75.2 yards per game), 27th in passing offense (250.6 yards per game) and 29th in pass efficency defense (88.9 yards per game).

NO SPLITTING THE UPRIGHTS ... YET: Augsburg did not attempt a field goal all of last season, but it had its first field goal attempt of the season two weeks ago against Carleton, a missed 37-yarder by Nick Schlieman (So., Burnsville, Minn.). Augsburg's last successful field goal attempt was a 42-yarder by Tim Mauseth in the final game of the 2001 season, against Concordia-Moorhead at the Metrodome.

FIRST COLLEGIATE START FOR TROY DEDEN: Augsburg freshman quarterback Troy Deden (Fr., Northfield, Minn.), making his first collegiate start in place of regular starter Tony George (So., Blaine, Minn.), completed 15 of 31 passes with two interceptions for 244 yards and a touchdown in his collegiate debut during Augsburg's loss to Concordia last week. Deden started in place of regular starter George, who suffered sprained ankle injuries in consecutive games. George tried to take a few snaps in the second quarter against Concordia, but was not able to remain in the game.

SCOUTING THE AUGGIES: Setting a single-game school record with 517 team rushing yards, Concordia College-Moorhead rallied from an early deficit to dominate in a 32-13 triumph over host Augsburg last Saturday afternoon at Edor Nelson Field. Running back Robert Clark rushed 19 times for 182 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Cobbers. He was one of three Cobbers to rush for more than 100 yards in the game, with quarterback Ryan Hebrink rushing for 141 yards on 17 carries and a touchdown, and running back Jeremy Hinderks rushing 17 times for 103 yards and two scores.

Augsburg had 325 yards of total offense in a losing effort. Augsburg took an early lead, behind the play of freshman quarterback Troy Deden (Fr., Northfield, Minn.), making his first collegiate start in place of regular starter Tony George (So., Blaine, Minn.). He completed 15 of 31 passes with two interceptions for 244 yards and a touchdown in his collegiate debut. However, Augsburg rushed for just 81 yards on 35 attempts in the game.

The Auggies jumped on the board first, as Deden capped a 13-play, 78-yard drive over 6:09 with a one-yard plunge. The drive included 10 rushing plays, the biggest play a 34-yard scamper by Ben Paul (Sr., St. Paul, Minn./Johnson HS). Concordia tied the game late in the quarter, after taking the ball at its own 42-yard line following a botched snap on a field-goal attempt by the Auggies. A three-play, 58-yard drive was culminated in a 33-yard rushing score by Clark. But the Auggies took the lead again on its next play from scrimmage, as Deden connected with Jamie Smith (Sr., Oakdale, Minn./Tartan HS) for an 80-yard touchdown, the longest passing play for the Auggies this season.

Another big play was the feature of the next drive, as Concordia's Josh Vickerman (Sr., Alexandria, Minn.) returned the Auggie kickoff 70 yards to the Augsburg 19-yard line. Four plays later, Hinderks scored his first touchdown on a seven-yard run, giving the Cobbers the lead for good. After that score, the game was dominated by the Cobbers' rushing attack. Concordia did not gain a single passing yard after its first drive in the first quarter, letting the run dictate the tempo of play in the rainy conditions.

Just before halftime, Concordia scored to cap a nine-play, 80-yard drive, as Clark found an opening and rambled 30 yards for the score, giving the Cobbers a 20-13 halftime lead. Concordia scored twice more to complete the dominating victory. Hinderks scored his second touchdown on a 19-yard run to complete a 13-play, 80-yard drive in the closing seconds of the third quarter. Early in the fourth quarter, Jordan Talge (Jr., Moorhead, Minn.) stopped an Augsburg drive with an interception at the Concordia 3-yard line, returning it 26 yards. On the subsequent Cobber drive, quarterback Hebrink was the feature player, as he rushed for 68 of the Cobbers' 71 yards on the drive, capping it with a 38-yard scamper for a touchdown to produce the final margin.

Concordia turned the ball over three times on fumbles, but Augsburg could not take advantage of the opportunities, as one drive in the second quarter started at the Concordia 16 was stopped on downs three plays later at the Concordia 41, another drive after a fumble stalled for a punt, and the final drive after a fumble was stopped by an interception by Concordia's Vickerman.

Augsburg was led by Paul's 60 rushing yards on 11 carries, with Nick Sanchez (Sr., Almond, Wis./Almond-Bancroft HS) gaining 45 yards on 16 carries. Deden passed for 244 yards, with Smith catching five passes for 111 yards. Andrew Neumann (Fr., Somerset, Wis.) caught five passes for 94 yards, and Yarzue Slowon (Jr., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) caught three passes for 51 yards.

Defensively, Augsburg was paced by Taylor Kroger (So., Cottonwood, Minn./Lakeview HS), who had 14 tackles (two solo). Jim Gunderson (Jr., Hastings, Minn.) had 11 tackles (five solo) and two forced fumbles, and Brandon Fox (Sr., Springfield, Minn.) had nine tackles (two solo), including one for loss. Ricky Schreier (So., Maplewood, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) and Jon Kozitza (Sr., North Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS) had eight tackles apiece.

SCOUTING THE JOHNNIES: Sophomore running back Jake Theis rushed for 146 yards on 24 carries with two touchdowns, and senior Ryan Keating threw for three scores as second-ranked St. John's beat host Carleton, 44-0, last Saturday at Laird Stadium in Northfield, Minn. The game, Carleton's Homecoming, was played in steady rain showers and very windy conditions. By the end of the game, the field was filled with mud, and the two teams fumbled seven times, four times in the fourth quarter.

SJU's first score of the game was a 19-yard touchdown pass from Keating to junior Lee Clintsman two minutes into the second quarter. Theis' first touchdown run was from six yards out with 6:47 remaining. Theis' second score capped an 11-play, 75-yard drive right before the half, giving the Johnnies a 22-0 lead at the break.

After scoring on their final three possessions of the first half, the Johnnies scored on their first two times on offense in the third quarter. After a muffed punt gave the Johnnies the ball at their own 45-yard line, SJU marched 55 yards in 10 plays, capped by Keating's seven-yard toss to senior Blake Elliott. On its ensuing possession, Carleton fumbled the snap on a punt, and St. John's converted the short field into a Keating-to-Josh Nelson five-yard scoring toss. The Johnnies added a blocked punt for a safety and an Aaron Babb 67-yard scoring run to cap the scoring.

SJU rushed for 368 yards and racked up 483 yards of total offense. Freshman Jamie Steffensmeier and senior Jeremy Hood paced the SJU defense with 2.5 sacks and two sacks, respectively, with Steffensmeier adding a game-high 12 tackles (nine solo). The SJU defense recorded seven sacks and held the Knights to 132 total yards on the afternoon. Elliott caught six balls for 84 yards and added six rushes for 60 yards. His touchdown reception moved him into a tie for seventh on the NCAA all-divisions touchdown reception list, one behind Jerry Rice, who played at Mississippi Valley State from 1981-84.

GAGLIARDI CLOSING IN ON ALL-TIME RECORD: St. John's head coach John Gagliardi is in his 55th season as a collegiate head coach and 51st season in Collegeville.
