Football 10/25/03 -- Augsburg 17, St. Thomas 14
BOXSCORE
MINNEAPOLIS (10/25/03) --
Ben Paul (Sr., St. Paul, Minn./Johnson HS) scored a one-yard touchdown with 1:23 remaining in the game, lifting Augsburg College to a 17-14, come-from-behind victory over the University of St. Thomas in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference football game Saturday afternoon at Augsburg's Edor Nelson Field.
Augsburg rallied for the third time this season to topple the Tommies for the first time in seven seasons, and only the third time in the last 33 years. Augsburg's last win over St. Thomas was in 1995, and the only other win over the Tommies in the last three decades was in 1992.
Augsburg is now 4-4 overall and 3-3 in MIAC play, while St. Thomas drops to 3-5 overall and 3-3 in MIAC play.
Trailing 7-3 midway through the fourth quarter,
Jamie Smith (Sr., Oakdale, Minn./Tartan HS) caught a 25-yard touchdown pass from
Tony George (So., Blaine, Minn.) with 8:59 left in the fourth quarter to give the Auggies its first lead of the game at 10-7.
But St. Thomas took the lead back when it got the ball, as the Tommies used a nine-play, 77-yard drive over four minutes to score. P.J. Theisen (Fr., New Prague, Minn.) caught a six-yard pass from Kyle Sherwin (So., Eagan, Minn./Eastview HS) to give the Tommies a 14-10 advantage with 4:59 left.
Augsburg claimed the victory on its subsequent drive, as the Auggies drove 68 yards in 12 plays to score the game-winning touchdown. Paul gained 31 of the 68 yards on the final drive -- nine on a pass reception from George early in the drive, and the final 22 yards on five straight carries.
The Tommies had one final chance to claim the victory, but its drive was stalled on downs at the St. Thomas 31-yard line on an incomplete pass, as
Jake Schmiesing (Sr., North Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS) broke up a Sherwin pass on fourth down.
The game was a defensive struggle throughout, as the teams had seven turnovers -- four by St. Thomas, three by Augsburg. Augsburg managed just 266 yards of total offense, while St. Thomas claimed just 305.
Both teams threw two interceptions in the first half, with the Tommies' Nick Navarro (So., Faribault, Minn./Bethlehem Academy HS) claiming both UST pickoffs.
Ross Peroutka (So., Faribault, Minn.) and
Jordan Hastings (So., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) had interceptions for Augsburg.
In an early battle for field position, the Tommies used a three-play, 42-yard drive to score their first touchdown. Walter Dosh (So., Green Bay, Wis./Green Bay Notre Dame HS) gained 39 yards on two rushes, setting the stage for a Justin Kostner (Sr., Arcadia, Wis.) three-yard rush to give the Tommies a 7-0 lead with 1:19 left in the first quarter.
Neither team scored again until midway through the third quarter, as Augsburg's
Nick Schlieman (So., Burnsville, Minn.) connected on his second field goal of the season, a 25-yarder.
The battle of attrition continued, with Augsburg setting the stage for the fourth-quarter comeback on a Tommie mistake. On fourth-and-4 from the St. Thomas 38-yard line, the snap on a St. Thomas punt attempt was bobbled, and the Tommies turned the ball over on downs at their own 40-yard line with 9:56 left in the fourth quarter. A 12-yard end-around run by
Yarzue Slowon (Jr., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) and a three-yard run by Paul put the ball at the St. Thomas 25, and George threw a fade-pattern pass to Smith in the front corner of the end zone for Augsburg's first touchdown of the day.
St. Thomas' defense, tops against the pass in the MIAC, held Augsburg quarterback George to just 139 yards passing on 9-of-30 attempts. Smith caught three passes for 76 yards, with
Andrew Neumann (Fr., Somerset, Wis.) catching two passes for 35 yards. Augsburg gained 127 yards on the ground, with
Steve Houser (So., Zimmerman, Minn./Elk River HS) gaining 67 yards on 16 carries, and Paul gaining 52 yards on 14 carries.
St. Thomas used two quarterbacks in the game, with starter Justin Lockrem (So., Woodbury, Minn.) completing 12-of-23 passes for 85 yards and two interceptions. He was relieved early in the fourth quarter by Sherwin, who threw for 109 yards and a touchdown, completing 10-of-13. Theisen caught five passes for 44 yards, with Joel Korte (So., Elk River, Minn.) catching five passes for 49 yards.
Kostner's 66 yards on 23 rushes led the Tommie running backs, with Dosh rushing eight times for 48 yards, collecting 140 all-purpose yards. He also had 76 yards on three punt returns, including a 59-yarder in the first quarter, and one kickoff return for 16 yards.
Brandon Fox (Sr., Springfield, Minn.) led Augsburg's defense with 14 tackles (four solo), including four tackles for loss, a pass breakup and a fumble recovery.
John Golnitz (Jr., Green Bay, Wis./Preble HS) had 11 tackes (five solo),
Jim Gunderson (Jr., Hastings, Minn.) had 10 tackles (four solo), and
Mike Matson (So., St. Francis Minn.) had nine tackles (three solo), including two sacks, a forced fumble and three tackles for loss.
Andy Ubbelohde (Fr., Red Wing, Minn.) led the Tommies with 12 tackles, while Ben Kessler (So., Janesville, Wis./Craig HS) had 10 tackles (four solo), including two sacks and three tackles for loss. Joe Sakja (Jr., Robbinsdale, Minn./Blake HS) had nine tackles (three solo), and Paul Sommerstad (Jr., Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview HS) had nine tackles (two solo).
Both teams return to MIAC action next Saturday (11/1) at 1 p.m., with Augsburg playing at Bethel and St. Thomas hosting St. John's in the annual battle of MIAC rivals.

St. Thomas beat the Auggies for the 30th time in the last 32 meetings and 16th time in a row at O'Shaughnessy Stadium. Augsburg's last football win on the Tommies' field was in 1970.
The Tommies' six touchdown passes tied a school single-game team record. The Tommies also tied a school single-game record with 634 yards of offense, including 428 yards gained in the first half while building a 32-0 halftime lead. Ambrasas completed 20-of-24 passes for 379 yards, five TDs and no interceptions. He led the Tommies on touchdown scores on six of their first seven possessions. Ambrasas now has 52 career TD passes and has thrown a touchdown pass in 23 consecutive games. UST backup QB Jesse Baker replaced Ambrasas in the third quarter and later threw a short pass that turned into an 86-yard TD reception by freshman Jimmy Mullen and built a 49-0 lead.
Senior wide receiver Ryan Galindo caught three TD passes (10, 20, 21 yards) as the Tommies built a 39-0 lead just five minutes into the third quarter. Senior WR Andrew Hilliard caught four passes for 107 yards, all in the first half, and now needs 179 yards to become UST's career receiving leader. Leading the Tommie defense were Dane Sievwright, with two sacks among his nine tackles; Sean O'Leary with two sacks; John Kaiser with 13 tackles; Dustin Peltier with a sack, an interception and seven tackles; and Matt McLaughlin with a fumble recovery. The Tommies held out senior standout running back Jake Barkley, who's recovering from a groin injury. Junior RB Justin Kostner ran 10 times for 78 yards but appeared to suffer a season-ending knee injury on an 18-yard scoring run early in the second quarter.
Augsburg gained 231 yards of offense but surrendered five sacks and had three second-half turnovers. The Auggies converted just 2-of-14 third-down conversions. Augsburg scored with 3:23 left in the game after St. Thomas fumbled a punt at the Auggie 9. On fourth-and-goal, Auggie backup QB
Tony George threw a four-yard TD strike to
Luke Wright, who made a leaping catch in the corner of the end zone. Starting quarterback
Dave Fransen completed 12-of-22 passes for 142 yards for the Auggies, with
Yarzue Slowon catching six passes for 95 yards.
T.J. Bramwell rushed 19 times for 69 yards.
Mitch Theisen led the Auggies with nine tackles (six solo), while
Ross Peroutka had seven tackles (five solo).
Chike Ochiagha had a quarterback sack.
OSBERG NOW AUGSBURG'S ALL-TIME FOOTBALL VICTORY LEADER: Augsburg head coach
Jack Osberg has been the architect of a rebirth of Augsburg College football since he was named head coach in 1991. Now, Osberg can add the mantle of the winningest coach in school history to his resume. With Augsburg's 31-24 win over St. Olaf on Sept. 20, Osberg passed his former coach, Edor Nelson, to claim his 57th career win, one more than Nelson on the all-time football win list. Osberg, a 1962 Augsburg graduate, is in his 13th season with the Auggies and now has a 58-70 career record. Nelson went 56-118-10 from 1947-69. Osberg also has the most MIAC wins (46-65-0) of any Augsburg coach, and his career overall winning percentage of .453 is second-best in school history. Bill Caris (1972-75) was 19-19, for the school's best winning percentage of .500. Osberg has the third-longest tenure among current MIAC football coaches, behind St. John's John Gagliardi (55th season, 51st at St. John's in 2003) and Bethel's Steve Johnson (15th season).
INJURY BUG BITING THE AUGGIES -- Augsburg has had the injury bug bite over the past several weeks with an already-thin roster. Starting quarterback
Tony George (So., Blaine, Minn.), who suffered sprained ankle injuries in consecutive games -- a loss at Gustavus on Sept. 27 and a win over Carleton on Sept. 27. He did not start against Concordia-Moorhead last week, with
Troy Deden (Fr., Northfield, Minn.) taking his first collegiate start at quarterback. George returned to the lineup in the loss to St. John's, and will start again this week against St. Thomas.
Wide receiver
Shawn Johnson (Jr., Faribault, Minn.) was lost for the season with a broken collarbone in the Gustavus game. Lost for the season against Carleton was linebacker
Kyle Voelz (Jr., Morgan, Minn./Cedar Mountain HS), who suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). Running back
Pat Lofboom (Jr., Stillwater, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) was also lost for the season with an injury earlier this year. Defensive lineman
Chike Ochiagha (Jr., Savage, Minn./Holy Angels HS) has also been scratched for the season due to an ankle injury.
SCHLIEMAN AMONG NATION'S TOP PUNTERS: Augsburg kicker/punter
Nick Schlieman (So., Burnsville, Minn.) is among the nation's leaders in punting in NCAA Division III football, according to statistics released after the seventh week of games.
Schlieman ranks fourth nationally in punting, with a 42.5-yard average. In the season-opener against Jamestown (N.D.), Schlieman had eight punts for 419 yards (52.4-yard average), including a school-record 74-yard punt on Augsburg's first drive. He also had punts of 68, 59 and 52 yards in the game to earn both MIAC and Division III National (Don Hansen's Football Gazette) Special Teams Player of the Week honors.
Schlieman continues to lead the MIAC in punting, averaging 42.5 yards per punt overall and 39.9 yards per punt in conference games. So far this season, Schlieman has 41 punts. Of those, 23 are 40 yards or longer, 11 are 50 yards or longer and five are 60 yards or longer, including the school-record 74-yarder in the season-opener against Jamestown (N.D.) and punts of 65 and 66 yards in the last two games, losses to Concordia-Moorhead and St. John's. Schlieman has placed 13 punts inside the opponent 20-yard line this season, against eight touchbacks and only two fair catches.
For St. Thomas, sophomore linebacker Andrew Ubbelohde is tied for 16th nationally in tackles per game, averaging 12.2 (73 total tackles, 33 solo).
FINALLY, A FIELD GOAL!: After 16 games without hitting a successful field goal, Augsburg finally split the uprights in last week's 63-9 loss to St. John's.
Nick Schlieman (So., Burnsville, Minn.) connected on a 25-yard field goal in the first quarter, making him 1-for-2 on field goals this season. He missed a 37-yarder against Carleton on Oct. 4. Augsburg did not attempt a field goal all of last season, and had not had a field-goal attempt until the Carleton game. Prior to last week, Augsburg's last successful field goal attempt was a 42-yarder by Tim Mauseth in the final game of the 2001 season, against Concordia-Moorhead at the Metrodome.
DOUBLE-DUTY AUGGIES: Augsburg has several players who will be pulling double duty starting this week, as practices have begun for winter sports. The highest-profile double-duty Auggie is wide receiver
Yarzue Slowon (Jr., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS), who is a rare all-conference player in two team sports -- an All-MIAC second-team selection in football and an All-MIAC first-team selection as a men's basketball point guard last year.
Two football players will join the Auggies' eight-time national-champion wrestling team as upper-weight wrestlers -- defensive lineman
Joe Cullen (Jr., Coon Rapids, Minn.) and tight end
Andrew Neumann (Fr., Somerset, Wis.), who was a two-time state champion in high school. Running back
Brady Seesz (Fr., Northfield, Minn.) will join Augsburg's men's hockey team in the winter.
Linebacker
Jon Kozitza (Sr., North Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS), wide receiver
Kurt Dybdahl (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn./Edison HS) and defensive lineman
Tom Stefanacci (Sr., St. Louis Park, Minn.) were on Augsburg's baseball team last season, and quarterback
Troy Deden (Fr., Northfield, Minn.), who played baseball last year at St. Mary's before transferring to Augsburg, will join the Auggies as a catcher this season. Offensive lineman
Jon Dahlin (Sr., St. Louis Park, Minn.) is a weight thrower for Augsburg's track and field team.
BIG GIVE-UPS IN LAST TWO GAMES: Augsburg has allowed 2,669 yards of opponent total offense this season, but 36 percent of those yards allowed (953) have come in the last two games, as Augsburg allowed 529 yards (517 rushing) against Concordia on Oct. 11 and 436 to St. John's on Saturday.
AUGSBURG TO HONOR 11 SENIORS BEFORE SATURDAY'S GAME: Augsburg will honor its 11 seniors who will be playing in their final games at Edor Nelson Field (the last Auggie "home game," against Hamline on Nov. 6, is at the Metrodome) on Saturday against St. Thomas. Being honored will be:

SCOUTING THE AUGGIES: The second-ranked St. John's University football team claimed a 63-9 victory over Augsburg on Saturday at Clemens Stadium in Collegeville, Minn. SJU outgained Augsburg 426 to 260 in total offense. Augsburg had seven turnovers -- six interceptions and one fumble -- in the game. The Johnnies passed for 333 yards and rushed for 103 yards, while Augsburg had a balanced offensive attack with 133 yards rushing and 127 yards passing. The Auggies held an 11-minute advantage in time of possession. The Johnnies scored seven touchdowns in a span of eight possessions during the first, second and third quarters.
SJU senior wide receiver Blake Elliott caught a 68-yard touchdown reception from senior quarterback Ryan Keating on the second offensive play of the game to go up 7-0. Sophomore
Nick Schlieman kicked a 25-yard field goal with 4:33 left in the first quarter and the Auggies cut the lead to 7-3. Before the end of the first quarter, junior wide receiver Matt Breen caught a 28-yard touchdown pass from Keating and SJU increased its lead to 14-3. In the second quarter, junior wide receiver Lee Clintsman caught a 39-yard touchdown pass from Keating at 14:47 to make the score 21-3. In the last 5:35 of the half, senior running back Josh Nelson and sophomore running back Jake Theis scored touchdown runs of two and eight yards, respectively, to give SJU a 35-3 halftime lead.
Augsburg scored its only touchdown of the game at 11:15 of the third quarter as senior wide receiver
Jamie Smith caught a three-yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback
Tony George. The extra-point failed and the score was 35-9. Theis scored his second touchdown of the game from seven yards out at the 9:01 mark. Elliott scored his second touchdown of the game at 6:02 of the third quarter on an eight-yard pass from senior quarterback RJ Welsh. The final scoring of the third quarter came on a 29-yard interception return by junior linebacker Paul Gans and SJU led 56-9. The only scoring of the fourth quarter came at the 6:51 mark as junior tight end Justin Winkels caught an 18-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Dana Schleicher.
Individually, Gans tied a SJU school record with four interceptions and had 139 yards on interceptions returns. Elliott caught seven passes for 121 yards and two touchdowns. Breen had four catches for 88 yards and one touchdown. Keating was 14-of-23 passing for 266 yards and three touchdown passes. Ricky Schreier had seven total tackles and senior linebacker
Jon Kozitza added six total tackles.
SCOUTING THE TOMMIES: St. Thomas has not had a losing season since 1994 (4-6), which makes this week's game against Augsburg a crucial one for both teams. The Tommies are 3-0 at home, but 0-4 on the road this season. Last Saturday, defenders Matt Meunier and Andrew Ubbelohde forced crucial second-half turnovers to help the Tommies score a 35-13 victory over visiting Carleton at O'Shaughnessy Stadium. The Tommies beat the Knights for the 11th consecutive time, but it wasn't easy.
St. Thomas broke to a 14-0 lead with first-quarter scoring drives of 37 and 80 yards capped by short TD runs by Justin Kostner and Paul Delaney. The Knights pulled within 14-7 by halftime on a 2-yard touchdown catch on a trick play. Meunier's 30-yard interception return for a touchdown gave the Tommies a 21-7 lead with 3:50 left in the third period. But Carleton's Erik Fisher ran 71 yards for a score to pull the Knights within 21-13 with 2:53 left in the quarter. The PAT kick missed to keep the lead at eight points. Still trailing 21-13 early in the fourth period, the Knights capitalized on two Tommie 15-yard penalties and faced first down at the St. Thomas 46. But Ubbelohde stripped the ball from the Carleton quarterback and recovered at the Tommie 45 to halt that drive.
St. Thomas added fourth-quarter rushing TDs by Kostner from 18 yards and Walter Dosh from 43 yards to ice the victory. Kostner had 149 yards of offense (21 rushes for 83 yards, three receptions for 66 yards). Dosh finished with 88 rushing yards on 13 carries, 32 yards on two punt returns, and 19 yards on two receptions. Dosh has seven touchdowns in his three career games at O'Shaughnessy Stadium.
Carleton was held to just 29 yards passing as St. Thomas outgained the Knights 393-219 yards in total offense. St. Thomas was hurt by 13 penalties for 125 yards. Defensively, Meunier had two tackles for loss among his eight tackles, with his key interception, to lead St. Thomas.
NEXT WEEK: Both teams return to MIAC action next Saturday (11/1) at 1 p.m. Augsburg has its last road game of the year, against Bethel at Armstrong Stadium in Arden Hills, Minn. St. Thomas hosts St. John's in the biggest rivalry in MIAC football, with the game at O'Shaughnessy Stadium in St. Paul, Minn.
