Football 10/4/03 -- Augsburg 19, Carleton 0
BOXSCORE
MINNEAPOLIS (10/4/03) --
Ben Paul (Sr., St. Paul, Minn./Johnson HS) tied an Augsburg College single-game school record with three rushing touchdowns, as the Auggies shut out Carleton College 19-0 in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference football contest Saturday afternoon at Augsburg's Edor Nelson Field.
Augsburg put together 418 yards of total offense -- 224 rushing and 218 passing -- to improve to 3-2 overall, 2-1 in MIAC play and score the Homecoming game victory. Augsburg has now surpassed its win total from last season (2-8 overall, 1-7 in MIAC). Augsburg claimed its first shutout since the 2001 season, and has now won seven games in a row in the all-time series against Carleton.
Carleton drops to 0-4 overall and 0-4 in MIAC play. The Knights have now lost 30 games in a row, dating back to the 2000 season. Carleton's last win was a 27-14 triumph over Macalester on Sept. 30, 2000.
Steve Houser (So., Zimmerman, Minn./Elk River HS) rushed for a career-best 128 yards on 29 carries to lead the Auggies, while Paul rushed nine times for 38 yards. His touchdowns of three, six and 12 yards tied him for the school's mark for single-game rushing touchdowns.
T.J. Bramwell accomplished the feat in a 2002 game, while Marty Alger scored three rushing TDs in a 1993 game and Mike Strandness did the same in a 1994 game.
The Auggies had 81 offensive plays to Carleton's 68, and limited the Knights to 281 yards of total offense (86 yards rushing, 195 passing). Augsburg held the ball for 33:13 compared to 26:47 for the Knights.
Augsburg took advantage of three Carleton turnovers -- all on rushing fumbles near the line of scrimmage -- turning two into touchdowns.
On Carleton's first drive of the game, the Knights turned the ball over on a fumble at their own 36-yard line. Seven rushing plays later, Paul scored from three yards out.
Late in the second quarter, Augsburg struck paydirt again. Two long passes from
Tony George (So., Blaine, Minn.) -- a 23-yarder to
Jamie Smith (Sr., Oakdale, Minn./Tartan HS) and a 22-yarder to
Andrew Neumann (Fr., Somerset, Wis.) -- set up Paul for a six-yard rushing score with 3:25 left in the half.
The teams exchanged punts in the third quarter before Augsburg shut the door on the Knights early in the fourth quarter. Carleton had its longest sustained drive of the game -- a nine-play, 80-yard drive -- before fumbling the ball at the Augsburg 3-yard line. Augsburg then took the ball 97 yards in nine plays, which included a 49-yard pass from George to
Yarzue Slowon (Jr., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS). The drive was capped on a 12-yard rushing score by Paul to put a close on the shutout victory.
George threw for 200 yards, completing 14 of 27 yards. Slowon caught three passes for 90 yards, Neumann had four catches for 59 yards and Smith caught three passes for 44 yards.
Augsburg's defense played a huge role in the victory, claiming four sacks, forcing one fumble and accumulating 13 tackles for loss and four pass breakups.
Brandon Fox (Sr., Springfield, Minn.) had 12 tackles (five solo), including two for loss and a fumble recovery.
Joe Cullen (Jr., Coon Rapids, Minn.) had nine tackles (three solo), with 1.5 sacks and two tackles for loss, and
John Golnitz (Sr., Green Bay, Wis./Preble HS) had nine tackles (one solo).
Sam Harmer (Sr., Silver Bay, Minn./Kelley HS) had four tackles for loss and a sack.
Taylor Kroger (So., Cottonwood, Minn./Lakeview HS) had two fumble recoveries in the game.
Carleton quarterback Darren Caspers (Fr., Bemidji, Minn.), making his second career start, threw for 195 yards, completing 14 of 31 passes. Nate Flaherty (Sr., Oakdale, Minn./Tartan HS) caught five passes for 115 yards, including a 46-yarder in the Knights' long fourth-quarter drive. Dale Williams (Sr., Bloomington, Minn./Governor Dummer HS) caught three passes for 32 yards.
Erik Fisher (Sr., Maple Lake, Minn.), the leading rusher in the MIAC entering Saturday's game (125.7 yards per game in league play), led the Knights with 60 rushing yards on 19 carries, while Caspers had 27 rushing yards on 12 carries.
Carleton's defense was led by Luke Mullerleile (So., White Bear Lake, Minn./Mahtomedi HS), who had 14 tackles (five solo). Randy Foss (Fr., Hastings, Minn.) had 13 tackles (one solo) and Andrew Wild (Sr., Janesville, Wis/.Craig HS) had 12 tackles (two solo). Nick Brooke (So., Roseville, Minn.) claimed a second-quarter interception, and Tim Blaha (So., Northfield, Minn.) had a sack.
Both teams return to MIAC play next Saturday (10/11) at 1 p.m., with Augsburg hosting Concordia-Moorhead at Edor Nelson Field, and Carleton hosting St. John's at Laird Stadium in Northfield, Minn.

CARLETON GAME PREVIEW
THE GAME: The Augsburg College Auggies (2-2 overall, 1-1 MIAC) host the Carleton College Knights (0-3 overall, 0-3 MIAC) in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference football game on Saturday, October 4 at 1 p.m., at Edor Nelson Field (capacity 2,000) in Minneapolis, Minn.
COACHES: Augsburg head coach
Jack Osberg (Augsburg '62) is in his 13th season and has a 57-68 career mark. Carleton head coach Chris Brann (West Virginia Wesleyan '91) is in his third season and is 0-23 overall.
RADIO: Augsburg football is normally aired on KCCO-AM 950 in the Twin Cities, but Saturday's game will not be aired on KCCO due to a preemption. Because the Minnesota Twins' baseball playoff game against the New York Yankees will be heard on WCCO-AM 830 on Saturday at 12 noon, the Minnesota Gophers' football game at Northwestern (11 a.m.) will be moved to KCCO. However, Saturday's Auggie game will be heard online on Augsburg's athletic website, through an arrangement with SportsJuice.com. Point your browser to http://www.augsburg.edu/athletics/liveaudio/ and click on the Live Audio link. Returning for their sixth season of broacasting Auggie football are Tom Witschen on play-by-play, with Russ Bohaty on analysis. Carleton games are broadcast on KRDS FM 95.5 in New Prague, Minn., with Ryan Phelps on the call. The Carleton broadcast can also be heard online by going to the Carleton website: http://webapps.acs.carleton.edu/athletics/index.php3?module=broadcasts.
SERIES: This is the 23rd game in the all-time series between Augsburg and Carleton, a series the Knights lead 12-10. The series began in 1978, when Carleton was a member of the Midwest Conference; Augsburg won both "nonconference" games between the two schools in 1978 and 1979. The teams have played every year since 1983, when Carleton rejoined the MIAC. Augsburg has won the last six games in a row in the series. Carleton won 11 games in a row in the series from 1984-1994. Augsburg head coach
Jack Osberg is 7-5 in his career against Carleton.
LAST WEEK: Augsburg fell to 2-2 on the season last Saturday with a 28-7 loss at Gustavus Adolphus. Carleton dropped to 0-3 last Saturday with a 45-7 home loss to Concordia-Moorhead.
LAST YEAR:
T.J. Bramwell rushed for a career-high 170 yards -- 139 in the first half -- and two touchdowns to lead Augsburg to a 49-6 rout of host Carleton on Oct. 5, 2002 at Laird Stadium. Bramwell mixed a career-high 60-yard run with touchdown runs of 10 and two yards in the first quarter. Carleton got on the board first, as quarterback Ben Cooprider scored on a four-yard run on the Knights' first drive, a 14-play, 64-yard effort.
But after that drive, it was all Augsburg. The Auggies scored on seven of their first eight drives. Bramwell rushed for 29 yards on Augsburg's first drive, including his 10-yard score. After the Auggies got the ball on downs, a seven-play, 84-yard drive, keyed by Bramwell's 60-yard jaunt to the Carleton 15-yard line, later resulted in Bramwell's second touchdown. On the first play of the second quarter,
Brandon Fox forced a fumble, which
Sam Harmer recovered and scrambled 49 yards for a touchdown. Augsburg's special teams scored on the next drive, as
Andy Matzke returned a punt 56 yards for a touchdown. Bramwell rushed for a two-point conversion. Augsburg continued the scoring assault on its next two drives, as
Joe Starks netted his first career touchdown with a one-yard run, and
Pat Lofboom capped the first half with an 11-yard scoring run for his first career touchdown. Augsburg scored once more in the third quarter, as
Yarzue Slowon scored his second touchdown of the season on a five yard reception from quarterback
Dave Fransen, making the score 49-6.
Augsburg put together 457 yards of total offense, including 283 rushing yards, a single-game high in the 2002 season. Augsburg had to punt just once in the contest, converting 7-of-14 third downs against the Knights. Meanwhile, the Auggie defense limited Carleton to just 291 yards of total offense, including just 28 rushing yards. Augsburg defenders also sacked Carleton quarterbacks four times.
Fransen completed 11 of 15 passes for 134 yards for the Auggies, one of three quarterbacks used in the game. In additon to Bramwell's 170 rushing yards on 21 carries, Lofboom also had a career single-game high with 68 rushing yards on 12 carries. Slowon caught eight passes for a season-high 103 yards, while
Luke Wright caught three passes for 39 yards. Cooprider threw for 216 yards for the Knights, completing 20 of 34 passes with two interceptions. Carleton threw three interceptions in the game. Matzke scored his fifth interception of the season, and
Jake Schmiesing and
John Golnitz also had pickoffs. Erik Fisher led the Knights with 38 rushing yards on 10 carries and 73 receiving yards on five catches. Drew Dean had five catches for 72 yards. Defensively, Harmer led the Auggies with seven tackles (three solo), while
Luke Carlson and Fox had six tackles apiece.
Andy Stephenson had five tackles. Carleton was led defensively by Ben Phillips and Andrew Wild, who had nine tackles apiece.
OSBERG NOW AUGSBURG'S ALL-TIME FOOTBALL VICTORY LEADER: Augsburg head coach
Jack Osberg has been the architect of a rebirth of Augsburg College football since he was named head coach in 1991. Now, Osberg can add the mantle of the winningest coach in school history to his resume. With Augsburg's 31-24 win over St. Olaf on Sept. 20, Osberg passed his former coach, Edor Nelson, to claim his 57th career win, one more than Nelson on the all-time football win list. Osberg, a 1962 Augsburg graduate, is in his 13th season with the Auggies and now has a 57-68 career record. Nelson went 56-118-10 from 1947-69. Osberg also has the most MIAC wins (45-63-0) of any Augsburg coach, and his career overall winning percentage of .456 is second-best in school history. Bill Caris (1972-75) was 19-19, for the school's best winning percentage of .500. Osberg has the third-longest tenure among current MIAC football coaches, behind St. John's John Gagliardi (55th season, 51st at St. John's in 2003) and Bethel's Steve Johnson (15th season).
SWEEPING BOTH NORTHFIELD SCHOOLS A RARE OCCURANCE: Augsburg has played both Northfield schools -- Carleton and St. Olaf -- 22 seasons in school history, but Augsburg has swept both Northfield schools just five times -- all since 1995. Augsburg scored its first Northfield sweep in 1995, with a 20-7 win over Carleton and 20-12 win over St. Olaf. Augsburg also accomplished the sweep in 1997 (42-0 over St. Olaf, 35-21 over Carleton), 1998 (31-24 over St. Olaf, 31-28 over Carleton), 1999 (30-27 over St. Olaf, 52-7 over Carleton) and 2001 (52-21 over Carleton, 20-0 over St. Olaf). With both teams playing at Augsburg, the Auggies accomplished the sweep in 1997 and 1999.
INJURY BUG BITING THE AUGGIES -- Augsburg has had the injury bug bite over the past several weeks. Starting quarterback
Tony George (So., Blaine, Minn.) suffered a sprained ankle in last week's loss to Gustavus and his start in Saturday's game against Carleton will be a game-time decision. If he cannot start,
Troy Deden (Fr., Northfield, Minn.) would be the likely starter.
Wide receiver
Shawn Johnson (Jr., Faribault, Minn.) was lost for the season with a broken collarbone in the Gustavus game. Running back
Nick Sanchez (Sr., Almond, Wis./Almond-Bancroft HS) suffered a shoulder injury against Gustavus and is questionable for the Carleton game. Defensive lineman
Chike Ochiagha (Jr., Savage, Minn./Holy Angels HS) has been dealing with a nagging ankle problem and is questionable for the Carleton game.
SCHLIEMAN, SLOWON, CULLEN AMONG NATION'S LEADERS: Augsburg kicker/punter
Nick Schlieman (So., Burnsville, Minn.), wide receiver
Yarzue Slowon (Jr., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) and defensive lineman
Joe Cullen (Jr., Coon Rapids, Minn.) are all among the nation's leaders in several categories in NCAA Division III football, according to statistics released after the third week of games.
Schlieman dropped out of the top spot in the country in punting average for the first time this season after a difficult punting day in windy conditions last Saturday at Gustavus. Schlieman is now ninth nationally in punting, with a 41.7-yard average.
In the season-opener against Jamestown (N.D.), Schlieman had eight punts for 419 yards (52.4-yard average), including a school-record 74-yard punt on Augsburg's first drive. He also had punts of 68, 59 and 52 yards in the game to earn both MIAC and Division III National (Don Hansen's Football Gazette) Special Teams Player of the Week honors.
Slowon is 30th among Division III wide receivers in receptions per game, with a 6.8 receptions-per-game average. He has 27 receptions in four games this year for 364 yards and five touchdowns. His 91.0 yards-per-game average is 40th-best in Division III football.
Slowon earned MIAC Offensive Player of the Week honors in the 20-19 win over Jamestown, as he caught 13 passes for 145 yards and two touchdowns, both coming in the final 61 seconds of play as the Auggies rallied from a 19-6 deficit. His 13 catches are the third-most in a single game in Division III football this season, with Case Western Reserve (Ohio) receiver Jason Cellura making 15 catches against Wooster (Ohio) last Saturday for the most catches in Division III this season.
Cullen is tied for 27th nationally in sacks, with 4.5 through four games. He had two sacks for a loss of seven yards in Augsburg's win over St. Olaf on Sept. 20.
Carleton has three players in the national rankings. Freshman running back Erik Fisher is ranked 23rd nationally in rushing yards per game, averaging 125.7 yards per game (377 yards on 58 carries, two touchdowns). Defensive back Nicholas Brooke is ranked third nationally in interceptions per game, with a 1.0 interception-per-game average, three interceptions on the year. Kicker Pat Barry is ranked 25th nationally in field goals per game, averaging 1.0 (three field goals in three games).
HOMECOMING THIS WEEKEND: It's Homecoming weekend this weekend at Augsburg, with the theme of "Auggie Traditions." Homecoming events began earlier this week, and continue on Saturday and Sunday. For information on Homecoming, check online: http://www.augsburg.edu/alumni/homecoming03/.
In addition to the Homecoming football game, other athletic events on Saturday are the volleyball alumni match, 11 a.m. at Si Melby Hall; the men's soccer alumni game, 4:30 p.m. at Edor Nelson Field; and a women's soccer game against St. Catherine, 7:30 p.m. at Edor Nelson Field.
On Thursday, eight former Auggie student-athletes were inducted into the Augsburg Athletic Hall of Fame. The Augsburg Athletic Hall of Fame was established in 1973 to recognize male athletes who made special contributions to the college's athletic history. In 1989, female athletes were first inducted into the hall. Recipients are chosen each year on the basis of performance in Augsburg athletics, service to the school, civic and professional achievements and leadership. Honored in this year's class of inductees into the Augsburg Athletic Hall of Fame are:
Bob Adams '83 (wrestling) -- The only Augsburg wrestler ever to earn multiple All-American honors in a single season, Adams won the NCAA Division III individual championship at 134 pounds in 1983 and also placed second at the weight class in the NAIA championship meet, the only year Augsburg competed in both organization's national tournaments. Adams won MIAC titles in 1982 and 1983 and was Augsburg's Senior Honor Athlete in 1983.
Michele Boyer '89 (softball, women's basketball) -- Boyer earned All-American honors in 1988 as a softball outfielder, earning All-MIAC honors three years in a row (1987-89). Her .495 batting average in 1988 is the best single-season performance in school history, and her career .365 average stands fifth-best in school history. In basketball, Boyer was one of only five players in school history to score more than 1,000 points in her career, finishing with 1,019 points. She is third in school history in career field goals (437), assists (249) and steals (195). Boyer earned All-MIAC honorable mention honors in 1984-85, and All-MIAC honors in 1986-87 and 1987-88. She was Augsburg's Senior Honor Athlete in 1989.
Kevin Gordon '82 (men's hockey) -- An NAIA All-American in 1982, Gordon was a member of Auggie teams that won the national championship in both 1981 and 1982. Gordon was a member of Augie teams that won three straight MIAC championships (1980, 1981, 1982), and he earned All-MIAC honors in both 1980 and 1982, leading the team in scoring both years. His 30 goals in 1979-80 are the second-most in a single season in school history. He finished his career with 108 points (57 goals, 51 assists).
Ray Hamilton '75 (men's basketball) -- An honorable-mention All-American in 1975, Hamilton played two seasons of basketball at Augsburg, earning All-MIAC and NAIA All-District honors both seasons and MIAC Most Valuable Player honors in 1974-75, as the Auggies won the MIAC championship and advanced to the NAIA district championship game. His 902 career points put him 21st in school history in scoring. He led the Auggies in scoring both of his seasons and in rebounding his senior campaign.
Melanie Herrera-Storlie '88 (women's track and field, volleyball) -- Herrera earned All-American honors seven times in track and field, dominating the throwing events during her career. She qualified for national meets in the shot put all four years in outdoor competition and her final three seasons in indoor competition, winning NCAA Division III national championships in 1987 outdoors, and in 1988 in both indoor and outdoor competition. Her 15.25 meter (50-feet, 0.5-inch) effort to win the 1988 outdoor title remains an NCAA Division III championships record. She also played three seasons of volleyball at Augsburg. She was Augsburg's Senior Honor Athlete in 1988.
Robert LaFleur '80 (men's soccer) -- A two-time All-MIAC selection (1978-79) and NAIA All-District selection, LaFleur was a member of Auggie teams that went 43-15-10 in his career, never finishing lower than third in MIAC play. He was team captain his senior season.
Jim Peterson '78 (men's hockey, baseball) -- Peterson was a part of very successful Augsburg teams in two sports, as he was a member of Augsburg's first national championship team, the 1978 NAIA title team in men's hockey, and was a member of Augsburg's MIAC baseball championship team in 1975. He earned All-MIAC honors twice in both hockey and baseball, was a member of the NAIA All-Tournament Team in hockey in 1978 and earned Augsburg Senior Honor Athlete honors in 1978. He ended his hockey career with 153 points (72 goals, 81 assists), placing him seventh-best in school history in career scoring.
David Trost '81 (men's track and field, men's basketball) -- Augsburg's first men's track and field national meet qualifier, he finished third in the high jump at the NAIA outdoor national meet with a 2.14-meter (7-feet-0) effort, a school record that still stands. He won the MIAC title in the high jump in 1981. He also played on Augsburg's men's basketball team in 1980-81 on a team that earned the MIAC title (later forfeited).
NO SPLITTING THE UPRIGHTS ... YET: Augsburg did not attempt a field goal all of last season, and through four games, the Auggies have yet to attempt a field goal this season. Augsburg's last field goal attempt was a successful 42-yarder by Tim Mauseth in the final game of the 2001 season, against Concordia-Moorhead at the Metrodome.
SCOUTING THE AUGGIES: The Gustavus Adolphus College football team recorded a 28-7 Homecoming victory over Augsburg College on Saturday afternoon in St. Peter. The Gusties rushed for three first-quarter touchdowns with a strong wind at their backs to jump out to an early 21-0 advantage.
Running back Drew Stifter led the Gustavus ground attack with 142 yards on 27 carries. His 25-yard touchdown carry up the middle on the squad's first play from scrimmage gave the Gusties an early 7-0 advantage and a lead they would never relinquish. Fellow running backs Shawn Naber and Adam Nelson each scored first-quarter touchdowns on the ground. Naber plunged in from two yards out and Nelson scored on a 12-yard carry on the last play of the first quarter.
Gustavus took advantage of excellent first-quarter field position as Augsburg struggled to move the ball against the wind. The Auggies failed to pick up a first down on the game's opening drive.
Nick Schlieman, who led the nation in punting coming into the game, netted only four yards kicking into the wind to give the Gusties the ball at the 25-yard line which set up Stifter's scoring scamper.
Augsburg failed to cross the 50-yard line until the Auggies got the ball at the Gustavus 33-yard line midway through the second quarter, following a short Gustie punt into the wind. The Auggies took six plays to move the ball to the Gustavus six-yard line. On third down and goal, quarterback
Tony George's pass into the end zone was picked off by Matt Diercks, who returned the ball 100 yards for a touchdown to give Gustavus a 28-0 lead.
Augsburg finally got on the scoreboard when George hooked up with
Shawn Johnson for a 36-yard touchdown pass with 15 seconds remaining in the half. Neither squad was able to crack the scoreboard in the second half, as the halftime score of 28-7 proved to be the final in favor of the Gusties.
Gustie quarterback Sean Smith went 12-for-19 through the air for 101 yards. George was 16-for-43 and threw three interceptions as the Auggies were forced into their passing game while playing catch-up the entire day.
Gustavus outgained Augsburg 274 yards to 250 yards on the day. The difference was the running game, as the Gusties ran the ball for a season-high 173 yards and held the Auggies to just 97 yards on the ground.
SCOUTING THE KNIGHTS: Carleton is off to another slow start to the season, the third under head coach Chris Brann. Brann has yet to win a game at Carleton, with 23 losses in his three years. Carleton has lost its last 29 games in a row; its last win was a 27-14 triumph over Macalester on Sept. 30, 2000. Since 1997, Carleton is 7-56 overall, 4-52 in MIAC play.
Last Saturday, Concordia-Moorhead dropped the Knights to 0-3, with a 45-7 triumph at Laird Stadium in Northfield. Darren Caspers (Fr., Bemidji, Minn.) was 6-of-15 for 77 yards and Dan Karlgaard (Jr., Brainerd, Minn.) tallied 13 tackles, seven solo, but Carleton fell to Concordia-Moorhead.
Carleton forced a three-and-out on Concordia's first drive and got the ball back on downs on the Cobbers' second drive. Facing a fourth-and-three from its own 40-yard line midway through the first quarter, Carleton attempted a fake punt, but Concordia sniffed out the play, bringing Carleton's Wade Thompson (Fr., Peterson, Minn./Rushford-Peterson HS) down two yards shy of the first down.
Carleton opened the second half with a solid 14-play drive. Caspers moved the Knights to the Cobbers' 10-yard line, hooking up with Dale Williams (Sr., Bloomington, Minn./Gov. Dummar, Mass. HS) for a 24-yard pass play on third-and-long from the 34-yards line of Concordia. After a running play lost three yards, Caspers found Nate Flaherty (Sr., Oakdale, Minn./Tartan HS) on a bubble screen, which Flaherty took in for an apparent score. The officials called the play back on an offensive pass interference call. The Carleton coaches protested that no foul had occurred since the pass was completed behind the line of scrimmage, but to no avail. On fourth-and-goal from the 28, Caspers' pass to Flaherty was barely broken up, ending Carleton's drive.
The Knights got on the board midway through the fourth. After forcing the Cobbers to give the ball back on downs, Caspers hit Williams for a 14-yard gain on third down from the Knights' 36-yard line. On third-and-five from the Cobber 45, Caspers scampered for a 28-yard gain. On the next play, Thompson bounced outside, received a great downfield block from Matt Topeff (Fr., Andover, Minn./Blaine HS) and scored on a 17-yard run. The Knights' final drive pushed to Concordia's 10-yard line, but their 16th play of the drive, a fourth-and-one from the 10, ended in an incomplete pass.
The Cobbers held Carleton's Erik Fisher (Sr., Maple Lake, Minn.), the sixth-ranked rusher in the nation at more than 170 yards per game, to a meager 26 yards on 16 carries. He now has 921 career rushing yards and 377 rushing yards this season. Matt Bond (So., Falls Church, Va.) tallied 11 tackles, seven solo, and recovered a fumble in his first career start. Andrew Wild (Sr., Janesville, Wis./Craig HS) added 11 tackles as well.
NEXT WEEK: Both teams return to MIAC action next Saturday (10/11) at 1 p.m., with Augsburg hosting Concordia-Moorhead at Edor Nelson Field in Minneapolis, and Carleton hosting St. John's in the Knights' Homecoming game at Laird Stadium in Northfield, Minn.
