Men's Basketball 11/21/03 -- Augsburg 69, Wisconsin-Superior 68

DULUTH, Minn. (11/21/03) -- Making his Augsburg College debut, Joshua Klem (Jr., Maplewood, Minn./North St. Paul HS) hit six 3-pointers and scored 19 points, as the Auggies scored a 69-68, season-opening win over the University of Wisconsin-Superior in the opening game of the Wells Fargo Basketball Shootout, held at the College of St. Scholastica's Reif Recreation Center on Friday night.
Coach Brian Ammann's Augsburg club will face host St. Scholastica (coached by former Augsburg assistant coach Dave Staniger) in the tournament final on Saturday (11/22) at 5 p.m. St. Scholastica topped Finlandia (Mich.) 78-69 in the other semifinal game on Friday. Finlandia and Wisconsin-Superior will play in the third-place game on Saturday at 3 p.m.
Klem hit four 3-pointers and 12 points in the first half, as the Auggies built a 12-point halftime advantage, 41-29. Augsburg built the lead to its largest, 17 points at 54-39 with 13:00 left. But Wisconsin-Superior rallied back, scoring 17 unanswered points over a 4:28 span to tie the game, then take the lead at 61-59 with 6:14 left. Matt Bailey had three 3-pointers for nine points in the 17-0 run for the Yellowjackets.
Wisconsin-Superior built the lead to four points, 63-59 with 4:31 left, before Augsburg ran off a a 9-1 run over the next three minutes to take a 68-64 lead with 1:49 left.
Kevin Keto (Fr., Forest Lake, Minn.), making his collegiate debut, had five points in the run, hitting a key three-pointer at the 3:58 mark. It was a lead the Auggies would not relinquish, though the Yellowjackets hit a three-pointer from Laron Reed at the 20-second mark to trim the lead to 69-68, and had two chances to score in the closing seconds.
Casey Zilka (Sr., Eden Prairie, Minn.) had 15 points (including three 3-pointers), five rebounds and four steals for the Auggies, while Larry Burgess (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./North HS) had 12 points, hitting two 3-pointers.
Lucas Olson-Patterson (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn./Robbinsdale Cooper HS) had seven points and four rebounds, and
Grant Hemmingsen (So., New Brighton, Minn./Mounds View HS) had six points and four rebounds.
Wisconsin-Superior was led by Cody Kastern, who had 25 points and 10 rebounds, hitting 10-of-19 from the field. Bailey had 11 points, Marc Rothschadl had eight points and Bob Riley had seven points.
