MINNEAPOLIS (11/22/03) -- Adam Kostichka (Jr., Stevens Point, Wis.) had a goal and an assist, and Ted Eastman (So., Snohomish, Wash.) made 25 saves in goal, as the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point won for the sixth time in the last seven games, a 6-1 triumph over host Augsburg College in a nonconference men's hockey game Saturday night at the Augsburg Ice Arena.
James Jernberg (So., St. Cloud, Minn./Tech HS) had two assists for the Pointers, who improved to 6-3-0 overall. Six different Pointers scored goals, and 10 different players figured in the scoring.
Augsburg remains winless at 0-5-1 overall.
Wisconsin-Stevens Point dominated from start to finish, scoring four goals in the first period to take a commanding lead, driving Augsburg starting goalie
Erik Young (Jr., White Bear Lake, Minn.) from the game after making just seven saves on 11 shots in the frame.
Nick Molski (Jr., Stevens Point, Wis.) scored from Mike Brolsma (Jr., Appleton, Wis./North HS) at the 1:48 mark, but after Augsburg tied the game on an unassisted goal by
Dave Nelson (So., Woodbury, Minn./South St. Paul HS), it was all Pointers.
Eleven seconds into its first power play of the game, Brent Halverson (So., Cloquet, Minn.) scored for the Pointers, on assists from Kosticha and Chris Gehrke (Fr., Edina, Minn.), at the 7:53 mark. The Pointers scored twice in a 49-second span late in the period, as Nick Zebro (Fr., Mosinee, Wis.) scored from Derrick Johnson (Jr., Hayward, Wis.) and Jernberg, and Kostichka scored a power-play goal at the 16:55 mark, assisted by Jernberg.
Early in the second period, Wisconsin-Stevens Point again scored twice in quick fashion, with two unassisted breakaway goals -- one shorthanded -- in a 1:43 span. Justin Micek (Sr., Elk River, Minn.) tallied the shorthanded goal at the 1:44 mark, and Ryan Feil (Jr., Orland Park, Ill./Mt. Carmel HS) scored at the 3:27 mark.
Augsburg outshot Wisconsin-Stevens Point 18-17 in the final two periods, though the Pointers held the shot advantage in the game, 28-26.
Augsburg's Young was relieved in goal by
David Nash (So., Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) in the second period, with Young making 15 saves.
Wisconsin-Stevens Point returns to action on Wednesday (11/26), hosting St. Thomas at 7 p.m. Augsburg opens Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play after the Thanksgiving break with a two-game series against Gustavus Adolphus College. Augsburg will play at Gustavus on Dec. 5 at 7 p.m., and host Gustavus on Dec. 6 at 7 p.m. at the Augsburg Ice Arena.
