Wrestling 11/22/03 -- Augsburg at Concordia-Moorhead Cobber Open

MOORHEAD, Minn. (11/22/03) -- Augsburg College's Joe Moon * (Jr., Ellendale, Minn./New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva HS) earned Most Outstanding Wrestler honors, winning the 174-pound class at the Concordia-Moorhead Cobber Open wrestling tournament on Saturday.

Moon was one of seven Augsburg wrestlers to win weight-class titles at the open tournament, which attracted wrestlers from 12 colleges. No team scores were kept.

Moon, ranked second in the individual Division III national rankings at 174, claimed four victories in his weight class, including a technical fall and a victory over Omar Ortiz of William Penn (Iowa) in the championship match.

Marcus LeVesseur * (So., Minneapolis, Minn./Bloomington Kennedy HS), the defending national champion and top-ranked wrestler at 157 pounds, went 4-0 to win his weight class in his first action of the season.

Jamell Tidwell * (Jr., Burnsville, Minn./Bloomington Kennedy HS), ranked second nationally at 141 pounds, shared his weight class title with Mark Matzek (Jr., Ellsworth, Wis.).

Justin Sorensen (So., Owatonna, Minn.), ranked fifth nationally at 197, won his class with three decisions and a pin. Mark Simmonds (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn./Edison HS), ranked sixth nationally at heavyweight, scored two pins and claimed an overtime win in the finals to claim the heavyweight crown. Ryan Valek (So., Belle Plaine, Minn.) won the title at 165 pounds, going 4-0 with a pin and major decision.

Augsburg returns to action on Wednesday (11/26), hosting Minnesota State-Moorhead in a dual meet at 7 p.m. at Si Melby Hall.
