No. 2 Augsburg wins 7 of 10, dominates No. 22 Wis.-Stevens Point 25-9.

STEVENS POINT, Wis. (2/14/03) -- Claiming seven of 10 wins, Augsburg College scored a 25-9 victory over the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point in a nonconference wrestling dual meet Friday night at the Quandt Fieldhouse.

Augsburg, ranked second in the latest NCAA Division III national rankings, improves to 12-3 overall in dual meets, while Wisconsin-Stevens Point, ranked 22nd in Division III, is 5-9 overall.

Augsburg has won eight of the last 12 NCAA Division III national titles and the last three straight. Against teams from Divisions II and III, Augsburg is now 177-10 since 1989-90, losing just five matches since 1995-96. Against NCAA Division III opponents, Augsburg is 203-15 since the 1979-80 season. Since the 1989-90 season, Augsburg is 127-5 against Division III opponents.

Augsburg won the first seven matches of the dual but lost the last three, including two matchups of ranked wrestlers. At 174 pounds, Cody Koenig, ranked fourth in Division III, topped fifth-ranked Joe Moon * (So., Ellendale, Minn./NR-H-E-G HS) for the second time this season with a 8-4 win. Koenig is now 28-0 on the season. At 184, Brad Marten, ranked seventh in Division III, defeated Augsburg's Ricky Crone * (Sr., Apple Valley, Minn.), ranked second, 7-1.

Stevens Point's Yan White, ranked third at 197, finished the match with a 9-3 triumph over Augsburg's Justin Sorensen (Fr., Owatonna, Minn.).

Augsburg dominated the remainder of the match. Billy Morgan (So., Elbow Lake, Minn./West Central HS), ranked sixth in Division III at 165, scored a major-decision, 14-6 win over Stevens Point's Logan McLennan.

Marcus LeVesseur (Fr., Minneapolis, Minn./Bloomington Kennedy HS), top-ranked at 157, remained unbeaten at 34-0 with an injury default victory. Heavyweight Mike Flanagan (Sr., St. Paul, Minn./St. Thomas Academy HS), ranked fifth nationally, scored a 7-4 win over Mike Hayes.

Jamell Tidwell (So., Burnsville, Minn./Bloomington Kennedy HS), ranked fourth in Division III at 141, claimed a 6-1 win to improve to 38-2 overall. Greg Brendemuehl (Fr., Medford, Minn.), ranked sixth at 125, had a 7-4 win, and Mark Matzek (So., Ellsworth, Wis.) and Ryan Stroud (So., Park Falls, Wis.) claimed Auggie wins at 133 and 149, respectively.

Augsburg returns to action on Feb. 22, competing at the NCAA Division III Great Lakes Regional at Augustana College in Rock Island, Ill.
