MINNEAPOLIS (3/10/03) -- Brad Glassmaker (Sr., Lake City, Minn.) went 4-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI in the first game, and the University of Wisconsin-Superior converted four hits and five walks into five runs in the second game, as the Yellowjackets swept a baseball doubleheader from Augsburg College on Monday morning at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome.
In its season-opening doubleheader, Wisconsin-Superior won the first game 7-3 and the second 5-3. The second game was called after six innings due to time restrictions at the Metrodome. Augsburg drops to 0-5-1 overall, its losing streak moving to four games.
Superior held the lead through the game, and clinched the win with three-run seventh inning, taking advantage of three Augsburg errors. Two runs scored on a two-error play by Augsburg, and another came across on a suicide squeeze bunt by Andy Paul (So., Grand Rapids, Minn.).
The Yellowjackets scored single runs in each of four straight innings to build a 4-2 lead. A sacrifice fly by Luke Wargin (Jr., Proctor, Minn.) drove in a run in the second inning, an RBI single from Marcus Besonen (Sr., Trout Creek, Mich./Ewen-Trout Creek HS) brought in a run in the third, an RBI double by Chris Zubich (Jr., Hibbing, Minn.) plated a run in the fourth and a sacrifice fly by Besonen scored a run in the fifth.
Augsburg cut into the lead with two runs in the fourth and a run in the fifth. With two outs,
Andy Nelson (Fr., Waseca, Minn.) hit an RBI single to drive in
Pat Knafla (Jr., Rice, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice HS), and
Joe Holman (Sr., Springfield, Minn.) brought home
M.J. Iverson (Sr., New Germany, Minn./Norwood-Young America Central HS) on a single. Augsburg's
Nick Rathmann (Sr., Waseca, Minn.) scored on a wild pitch in the fifth.
Besonen pitched five innings, striking out three while allowing three walks, to score the first-game win for the Yellowjackets. Darran Greene (Jr., Duluth, Minn./Denfeld HS) piched two innings in relief to score the save.
Jeremy Nelson (So., Maplewood, Minn./Roseville HS) started on the mound for the Auggies and lasted four innings, with
Isaac Schmidt (So., Luverne, Minn.) and
Matt Topp (Sr., South St. Paul, Minn.) pitching in relief.
Augsburg scored a run in the top of the third inning to take its only lead of the game, when
Pat Marsh (Sr., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) drove in Nelson on a single.
But Superior scored four runs on just one hit in the bottom of the third to take a commanding lead. Two walks and a suicide-squeeze bunt by Kevin Olson (So., Superior, Wis.) brought in a run, and Tim Zubich (Jr., Hibbing, Minn.) came across after an error. A bases-loaded walk produced another run, and Glassmaker brought home a run on a groundout.
Augsburg scored twice in the fourth inning, as
John Golnitz (So., Green Bay, Wis./Preble HS) hit a leadoff double and scored on a single by
Tom Stefanacci (So., St. Louis Park, Minn.), who later scored on a bases-loaded walk.
The Yellowjackets scored one more run in the fifth, as Patrick Lind (So., Isanti, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti HS) reached on a fielder's choice double-play attempt and scored on another.
Superior used five pitchers in the game, with reliever Jeremy Hunter (Fr., Superior, Wis.) pitching an inning-and-a-third to score the win.
Josh Remme (Fr., Faribault, Minn.) took the loss after three innings of work.
Sammy Gross (Sr., Springfield, Minn.) made his collegiate pitching debut in relief, with
Jon Kozitza (Jr., North Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS) finishing the game in relief.
Augsburg will compete at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic in Fort Myers, Fla., during its spring break week, with 10 games over a seven-day span of March 16-22. Superior returns to action with four games in Joplin, Mo., March 16-17.
