FORT MYERS, Fla. (3/16/03) -- The Augsburg College baseball team opened play in the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic with a doubleheader loss to Aurora University (Ill.), the No. 9-ranked team in the preseason NCAA Division III baseball national rankings, on Sunday afternoon at Cape Coral Field.

Augsburg lost the first game of the doubleheader 2-0, then fell 13-3 in the second game to fall to 0-7-1 overall, its losing streak moving to six games.

In the first game, Aurora scored a single run in the third inning and an unearned run on a bunt single, steal and error in the fifth inning. Jeremy Nelson (So., Maplewood, Minn./Roseville HS) pitched a complete-game performance for the Auggies, striking out three and allowing just four Aurora hits.

Augsburg managed just three singles in the game, from Andy Nelson (Fr., Waseca, Minn.), Russ Bauer (Sr., Faribault, Minn.) and Pat Marsh (Sr., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS).

In the second game, Aurora scored five runs in the first four innings, then blew the game open with an eight-run sixth, sending 12 batters to the plate. Augsburg managed just one run in the sixth and two in the seventh. Jon Kozitza (Jr., North Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS) had a hit and scored a run, as did Joe Haehn (Fr., Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS).

Augsburg used five pitchers in the second game, with Josh Remme (Fr., Faribault, Minn.) starting and pitching three innings and Collin Nash (Jr., Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) pitching two innings.

Augsburg faces Worcester State (Mass.) on Monday (3/17) at 12 noon in a single game at Fort Myers.
