FORT MYERS, Fla. (3/19/03) -- Augsburg College pitchers gave up five home runs and 24 hits on Wednesday, as Clarkson University (N.Y.) scored 15 runs in a three-inning span to demolish the Auggies 27-10 in a nine-inning Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic baseball game at Cape Coral Field.
The Auggies kept it close early, trailing just 5-3 after three innings and taking a 7-5 lead after a four-run fourth inning, which featured a two-run double by
M.J. Iverson (Sr., New Germany, Minn./Norwood-Young America Central HS) and a two-run single by
Pat Marsh (Sr., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS).
But the Knights exploded with a seven-run frame in the bottom of the fourth, sending 11 batters to the plate. An eight-run sixth inning, as Clarkson sent 12 batters to the plate, clinched the big victory.
Augsburg dropped to 3-8-1 overall, breaking a three-game winning streak.
John Smith had two home runs and went 3-for-6 at the plate for Clarkson, smacking a two-run homer and a grand slam. Brandon Barcomb went 4-for-4 with five runs scored and four RBI, including a home run.
Marsh led Augsburg with a 2-for-4 day, driving in three runs. He had a solo home run in the third inning.
Taylor Pagel (So., Cannon Falls, Minn.) went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and three RBI, including a two-run homer in the second inning.
Nick Rathmann (Sr., Waseca, Minn.) went 2-for-2 with three runs scored for the Auggies.
Augsburg used five pitchers in the game, with each getting tagged for at least two runs.
Augsburg returns to action on Thursday, facing Washington and Jefferson (Pa.) in a single, nine-inning game at 7 p.m. at Cape Coral Field.
