FORT MYERS, Fla. (3/21/03) --
Joe Haehn (Fr., Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS) hit two home runs and drove in seven runs on the evening, and
Jeremy Nelson (So., Maplewood, Minn./Roseville HS) pitched a complete-game victory in the first game, as Augsburg College scored a win and tie in a doubleheader with the University of Massachusetts-Boston in a Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic baseball doubleheader Friday at Cape Coral Field.
Augsburg won the first game 13-1, then tied the Beacons 22-22 in a game called after eight innings due to tournament time constraints. Augsburg is now 5-8-2 overall, going 5-3-1 in nine games at the annual spring trip to Florida.
Haehn now has a team-high six home runs, hitting three in the last two days. He went 3-for-5 in the first game with three RBI and three runs scored, and went 3-for-6 with four RBI and two runs scored in the second game.
Meanwhile, Nelson was efficient on the mound in the first game, striking out six and, while allowing 13 hits, forcing the Beacons to strand eight runners on base. Augsburg also pulled off two double plays in the game.
In the first game, Augsburg scored nine runs in a three-inning span to take a commanding lead. A sacrifice fly by
Sammy Gross (Sr., Springfield, Minn.) and RBI singles by
Joe Holman (Sr., Springfield, Minn.) and
M.J. Iverson (Sr., New Germany, Minn./Norwood-Young America Central HS) brought in three runs in the second innning. A two-run single by
Nick Rathmann (Sr., Waseca, Minn.) and a wild pitch, scoring Rathmann, gave the Auggies three runs in the third inning, and Rathmann's two-run single and an RBI single by
Jon Kozitza (Jr., North Mankato, Minn.) gave the Auggies three runs in the fourth.
Andy Nelson (Fr., Waseca, Minn.) hit a single to drive in a run in the seventh, and Haehn completed the Auggie barrage with a three-run homer.
The second game was a wild affair, with each team accumulating 23 hits and combining for 12 errors -- seven by UMass-Boston, five by Augsburg. The Beacons stranded 10 runners on base, while Augsburg left 12 runners aboard.
After UMass-Boston scored five runs in the first inning, the Auggies matched the output in the bottom of the frame, as RBI doubles from Nelson and
Russ Bauer (Sr., faribault, Minn.), along with run-scoring singles by
Taylor Pagel (So., Cannon Falls, Minn.) and
Tom Stefanacci (Jr., St. Louis Park, Minn.) tied the game for the Auggies. Augsburg added five more runs in the second, as
Pat Knafla (Jr., Rice, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice HS) stroked his first home run of the season, a three-run shot.
An error and RBI singles by Bauer and Pagel gave the auggies three runs in the third, and Augsburg tacked on five more runs in the fourth, as Haehn blasted his second grand-slam home run in two days.
But the Beacons came back, scoring five runs in the fifth and four runs in the sixth, taking a 19-18 lead on an RBI single in the top of the seventh.
Augsburg tied the game in the bottom of the seventh, as Iverson walked and later scored an unearned run on a fielding error.
In the eighth inning, UMass-Boston plated three runs, but Augsburg matched the effort and forced the tie. Pinch hitter
Pat Marsh (Sr., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) hit an RBI single, and Nelson hit a two-out single to drive in two runs.
Nelson went 4-for-5 with three RBI to lead the Augies, while Bauer, Pagel and Knafla had three hits apiece.
Augsburg used five pichers in the game.
