MINNEAPOLIS (4/21/03) -- Cole Deibele (Jr., Sleepy Eye, Minn.) drove in the eventual game-winning run with a single in the fifth inning of the first game, then hit a two-run home run in the second inning to spark an 18-run outburst by St. John's University in the second game, as the Johnnies swept a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader from host Augsburg College on Monday afternoon at Parade Stadium.
After winning the first game 2-0, the Johnnies dominated in an 18-12 second-game triumph. The Johnnies are now 17-8 overall and 8-4 in MIAC play, while Augsburg drops to 9-16-2 overall and 4-8 in MIAC play.
The Johnnies pounded out 10 hits in the first game and 20 hits in the second. Matt Pilon (Sr., Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View HS) went 6-for-8 in the doubleheader, going 3-for-3 with two doubles in the first game and 3-for-5 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored in the second contest.
Justin Holmgren (Sr., Bemidji, Minn.) went 4-for-5 with three RBI and three runs scored in the second game, after going 2-for-3 with a run scored in the first contest. Charlie Carr (Sr., St. Cloud, Minn./Apollo HS) went 3-for-5 with a double, RBI and two runs scored in the second game, after going 2-for-3 in the first game. Mark Dunnigan (So., St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) went 2-for-3 with two doubles, two RBI and two runs scored in the second game, and Chris Bell (So., Little Falls, Minn.) had a three-run triple in the second game.
After Augsburg jumped out to a 3-0 lead after one inning in the second game, the Johnnies exploded over the next four frames, scoring six runs and sending nine batters to the plate in the second inning, two runs in the third and nine runs in the fourth inning, sending 14 batters to the plate and collecting eight hits. Augsburg attempted to rally back with eight runs in the final four innings, but the game was already decided at that point.
Augsburg used five pitchers in the second game, while St. John's used four, with Barry Folkens (Jr., Hector, Minn./Buffalo Lake-Hector HS) collecting the win, striking out four in four innings of work.
Pitcher Blake Cheeley (Fr., St. Cloud, Minn./St. John's Prep HS) pitched a complete-game shutout for St. John's in the first game, striking out four while walking three and allowing six hits. Augsburg stranded eight runners on base in the game.
John Hoffer (Jr., Eden Prairie, Minn.) opened the fifth inning with a single, and was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Chris Bell (So., Little Falls, Minn.). Deible singled to right field to drive in Bell with the first run of the game for the Johnnies. In the sixth, Holmgren opened the inning with a triple to the left-center gap, and came home on a sacrifice fly by Dusty Upgren (Sr., Sartell, Minn.).
Augsburg had the tying run at the plate in the sixth inning and on base in the seventh, but could not get the runs across against Cheeley.
Jeremy Nelson (So., Maplewood, Minn./Roseville HS) pitched 5.1 innings for the Auggies, striking out four.
Josh Remme (Fr., Faribault, Minn.) allowed just one hit in relief.
Pat Marsh (Sr., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) went 2-for-2 in the first game and 2-for-4 in the second game with a triple, two runs scored and two RBI for the Auggies.
M.J. Iverson (Sr., New Germany, Minn./Norwood-Young America Central HS) went 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored in the second game,
Collin Nash (Jr., Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) went 2-for-3 with three RBI and a run,
Russ Bauer (Sr., Faribault, Minn.) went 2-for-3 with a run-scoring double, and
Pat Knafla (Jr., Rice, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice HS),
Taylor Pagel (So., Cannon Falls, Minn.) and
Andy Nelson (Fr., Waseca, Minn.) also had two hits each.
Both teams return to MIAC doubleheader action on Tuesday (4/21) at 2:30 p.m., with Augsburg playing at Concordia-Moorhead and St. John's hosting Carleton.
