ST. PETER, Minn. (5/3/03) -- Tom Ramy went 4-for-6 in the doubleheader, including a double in the second game in going 3-for-3 with two runs batted in, as Gustavus Adolphus College claimed a sweep of visiting Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Myrum Memorial Field.
Gustavus won the first game 5-1 and the second game 10-1 in finishing its season 18-18 overall, 12-8 in MIAC play. Augsburg finished its season at 9-24-2 overall and 4-16 in MIAC play, having dropped its final 11 games in a row and 14 of its final 16.
The Gusties benefited from complete-game pitching performances to gain the sweep. Josh Spitzack struck out three and allowed just seven hits in the first game win, and Trent Larson struck out 10 in pitching a two-hitter in the second contest.
Gustavus scored three runs in the second inning, taking advantage of two Augsburg fielding errors, along with a run-scoring single and a suicide-squeeze bunt.
Augsburg came back in the fifth, on a leadoff, solo home run by
Taylor Pagel (So., Cannon Falls, Minn.). But Gustavus scored twice in the sixth, on a two-run double by Bryant Rogness, to clinch the game.
Augsburg pitcher
Nick Rathmann (Sr., Waseca, Minn.) also pitched a complete-game effort in the first contest, allowing nine hits but striking out two.
Pagel went 3-for-3 to lead the Auggies while Ben Scherer went 2-for-3 to lead the Gusties.
After spotting Augsburg the first run of the second contest, on a solo homer by
Pat Marsh (Sr., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) to open the game, the Gusties and Larson dominated the rest of the contest, allowing just one hit the rest of the way while scoring 10 unanswered runs.
The Auggies' only other hit was a second-inning single by Pagel, as Larson retired 15 Auggies in a row, before a two-out walk in the seventh inning.
Larson also helped himself at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double, triple, two RBI and four runs scored. Ash Larsen went 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored, and Ramy went 3-for-3 with a run-scoring double and RBI single.
