Football 9/6/03 -- Augsburg 20, Jamestown (N.D.) 19
BOXSCORE
JAMESTOWN, N.D. (9/6/03) -- Wide receiver
Yarzue Slowon (Jr., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) scored two touchdowns from quarterback
Tony George (So., Blaine, Minn.) in the final 1:01, including a diving, 25-yard score with 33 seconds to play, lifting Augsburg College to a 20-19, come-from-behind victory over host Jamestown College in a nonconference football game Saturday afternoon at Rollie Greeno Field.
Trailing 19-6 with 4:58 remaining, Augsburg scored twice on its final two drives in the season-opener for both teams.
George connected with Slowon on an 11-yard scoring pass with 1:01 remaining. After
Nick Schlieman (So., Burnsville, Minn.) connected on the extra point, Jamestown was whistled for a personal-foul, roughing-the-kicker penalty, placing the ball at midfield. Schlieman's onside kick was recovered by Augsburg's
Zach Manship (So., Rochester, Minn./John Marshall HS) at the Jamestown 39-yard line.
On the first play, George found Slowon on a 14-yard possession catch, going out of bounds at the Jamestown 25. After two incomplete passes, George threw to Slowon again, as he caught the pass diving in the end zone with 33 seconds remaining. Schlieman's extra point produced the game-winning margin.
George, making his first collegiate start at quarterback, completed 18-of-34 passes with one interception for 208 yards, with Slowon catching 13 passes for 145 yards.
Schlieman was another hero for Augsburg, as he boomed eight punts for an amazing 52.4-yard average. An All-MIAC punter last season as a freshman, Schlieman had a 74-yard punt in the first half and punts of 58 and 68 yards.
The Auggies came back after being dominated in the first half by Jamestown, an NAIA school. The Jimmies had 16 first downs to Augsburg's three in the first half, had 43 offensive plays to Augsburg's 17 and controlled the ball for 22 minutes compared to eight for Augsburg.
Jamestown led 10-0 at halftime, thanks to two long drives. The Jimmies opened the game with an eight-play, 80-yard drive, covering 4:01 and culminating in a 24-yard scoring run by Emmanuel Cannady (So., La Crosse, Wis.).
A 15-play, 74-yard drive consuming 6:54 in the second quarter was capped by a 20-yard field goal by Casey Lee to give the hosts the 10-0 lead.
Augsburg's defense dominated the second half, limiting Jamestown to just five first downs in the second half and forcing four turnovers -- three interceptions and a fumble recovery.
Augsburg scored its first touchdown of the season from its defense, as
Taylor Kroger (So., Cottonwood, Minn./Lakeview HS) scampered 25 yards on an interception return with 9:21 remaining in the fourth quarter.
However, the ensuing extra-point attempt resulted in points for Jamestown. The snap on the attempt went through the hands of the Augsburg holder, and Jamestown's Scott Geiszler recovered the ball and ran it 80-plus yards for a "defensive extra point," putting two points on the scoreboard for Jamestown for a 12-6 advantage.
On Jamestown's ensuing drive, quarterback Danny Wirtzberger (So., Havre, Mont.) ran 32 yards on a broken play from the option with 4:52 left to take a 19-6 lead.
Augsburg's next drive was ended on a broken-up pass on fourth down, giving Jamestown the ball. However, the Jimmies gave up the ball on a fumble, giving the Auggies the ball at their own 39-yard line with 2:08 to play, setting the stage for the late-game heroics.
Augsburg continues its nonconference action next Saturday (9/13) at 7 p.m., playing at Wisconsin-Eau Claire. Jamestown opens its DAC-10 conference action next Saturday at 1:30, playing at South Dakota Tech in

OSBERG ONE WIN FROM TYING SCHOOL RECORD: Augsburg head coach
Jack Osberg has been the architect of a rebirth of Augsburg College football since he was named head coach in 1991. Osberg enters his 13th season with the Auggies with a 55-66 career record, the second-most wins in school history, just one win behind the school's all-time record, Edor Nelson's 56 wins (56-118-10) from 1947-69. He has the most MIAC wins (44-62-0) of any Augsburg coach, and his career overall winning percentage of .455 is second-best in school history. Bill Caris (1972-75) was 19-19, for the school's best winning percentage of .500. Osberg has the third-longest tenure among current MIAC football coaches, behind St. John's John Gagliardi (55th season, 51st at St. John's in 2003) and Bethel's Steve Johnson (15th season).
AUGSBURG AGAINST THE DAKOTAS: This is Augsburg's first-ever meeting with Jamestown, but it will be the eighth game against a North Dakota college and 13th against Jamestown's conference, the Dakota Athletic Conference (DAC-10). Against DAC-10 teams, Augsburg is 9-3 all-time. Augsburg is 6-1 against North Dakota schools -- 4-0 against Mayville State (1995, 1996, 1998, 1999) and 2-1 against Valley City State (1974, 1975, 1997). Among DAC-10 schools from South Dakota, Augsburg is 2-2 against Huron (1986, 1987, 1993, 1994) and 1-0 against Dakota State (2002). Augsburg has played a DAC-10 school in its season-opener eight times in the last 10 years.
OSBERG IS 10-2 IN SEASON-OPENERS: Augsburg head coach
Jack Osberg has led a resurrection of Augsburg football since being hired as head coach before the 1991 season. One of his strongest accomplishments has been his record in season-opening games, in which he is 10-2 in his Auggie tenure.

SECOND STRAIGHT SEASON WITH TWO REGULAR-SEASON NONCONFERENCE GAMES: With Macalester having dropped its MIAC affiliation for football for a five-year span, Augsburg has to play two nonconference games in its 10-game regular-season schedule. After Carleton joined the MIAC in 1983 to give the conference 10 football schools, Augsburg played nine conference games from 1983 to 2001, with the exception of 1991, when a game against Gustavus was cancelled due to the infamous Halloween blizzard. Last year, Augsburg went 1-1 in nonconference games, topping Dakota State (S.D.) 44-14 and losing at Wisconsin-Eau Claire (37-13). Prior to last season, Augsburg's last regular-season schedule with two nonconference games was 1983, when Augsburg defeated Buena Vista (Iowa) 29-24 on Sept. 3 and lost to Bemidji State 23-7 at the Metrodome on Nov. 20. That season, Augsburg went 4-7, the only year that Augsburg has had an 11-game regular season. Augsburg played three nonconference games in its MIAC championship season of 1997 (10-2), with its regular season win at Valley City State (N.D., 24-20 on Sept. 6) and two games in the NCAA Division III national playoffs (34-22 win over Concordia-Moorhead at the Fargodome on Nov. 15 and 61-21 loss at Simpson (Iowa) on Nov. 22.).
AUGSBURG TO PLAY 600TH GAME IN SCHOOL HISTORY NEXT WEEK: Augsburg will reach a football milestone in next Saturday's game at Wisconsin-Eau Claire, with the 600th game in school history. This is the 72nd season of Augsburg College football, and Augsburg has a 183-395-20 record (.323) through 598 games. Augsburg started its football program in 1926 and had teams until 1934; resumed football in 1939 and fielded teams until 1942; and resumed football in 1945 with teams every season since. Augsburg will be one of two MIAC teams approaching football milestones this season; Bethel will play its 500th game in school history in its seventh game of the season.
All-time football history among MIAC schools entering 2003 season:
Augsburg -- 183-395-20 (598 games, first season 1926)
Bethel -- 202-283-8 (493 games, first season 1947)
Carleton -- 431-371-25 (827 games, first season 1883)
Concordia-Moorhead -- 426-243-39 (708 games, first season 1920)
Gustavus Adolphus -- 428-274-21 (723 games, first season 1902)
Hamline -- 466-416-28 (910 games, first season 1882)
Macalester -- 270-503-33 (806 games, first season 1887)
St. John's -- 494-213-24 (731 games, first season 1900)
St. Olaf -- 375-309-19 (703 games, first season 1919)
St. Thomas -- 484-305-34 (823 games, first season 1904)
SCOUTING THE AUGGIES: The challenge is a strong one for the Augsburg College football team in 2003: Make a move forward from last season's disappointing 2-8 overall, 1-8 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference finish, which included three losses by a touchdown or less. Rebuild from significant losses at several positions. Face one of the strongest schedules in school history. And accomplish it all with a team that will lack overall depth, with just 38 letterwinners returning.
But there are significant signs of optimism for the Auggies entering the 2003 season. Several key position players return, among them a receiving corps that could be the most talented in the MIAC. There's overall strength in the defense. And an all-conference punter/kicker returns to the Auggie lineup. The key for Augsburg head coach
Jack Osberg, entering his 13th season as the Auggies' mentor, will be to mold the 59-player lineup into a cohesive, consistent unit.
"Our goal is to improve the consistency of our play," Osberg said. "I thought we were too inconsistent last year. There are three components to the game -- offense, defense and special teams -- and if you're not firing on all three components, you're going to get beat. We're going to work real hard to be more consistent in all three areas. That's a huge goal for us."
While just four offensive starters return, there is confidence for progress. The Auggies will show more of a "West Coast" style in its offensive approach, taking advantage of a receiving corps that could be the best in the MIAC.
Keying the receiving corps is
Yarzue Slowon (Jr., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS), who earned All-MIAC second-team honors in his first Auggie campaign last year. Slowon was one of only a handful of conference athletes to be All-MIAC in two sports last season, as he also earned first-team all-conference honors as a basketball point guard. In football, Slowon caught a team-high 53 passes for 726 yards and six touchdowns. An experienced player, he appears to be ready to accept the mantle of offensive leadership. Joining Slowon will be
Jamie Smith (Sr., Oakdale, Minn./Tartan HS), a speedy, versatile receiver who returns to the Auggies after taking last season off. He averaged 12.7 yards per reception with two touchdowns in 2001.
At quarterback,
Tony George (So., Blaine, Minn.) will enter the season as the likely starter. He saw action in seven games last season as the Auggies' primary backup, gaining valuable experience that should help him this year. Backing up George will be two newcomers with significant high school experience --
Troy Deden (Fr., Northfield, Minn.), who transferred to Augsburg after playing a season of baseball at St. Mary's (Minn.), and
Eric Bohnhoff (Fr., Northfield, Minn.).
The Auggies are also deep at the running back positions, with
Ben Paul (Sr., St. Paul, Minn./Johnson HS) leading the way. After a breakout sophomore campaign in 2001 (586 yards, six touchdowns), Paul struggled with injuries last season, with just 271 yards and three scores on 80 carries. However, Paul is healthy and ready to accept the mantle of leadership, Osberg and Privette noted.
Five tailbacks return, led by
Pat Lofboom (Jr., Stillwater, Minn./Mahtomedi HS), who saw some key time on the varsity level last season, appearing in eight games and scoring a touchdown.
Nick Sanchez (Sr., Almond, Wis./Almond-Bancroft HS) also returns with experience, and
Steve Houser (So., Zimmerman, Minn./Elk River HS) also had a strong JV year and could see more varsity time this season.
Josh Erickson (So., New Prague, Minn.) also returns, joined by newcomers
Brady Seesz (Fr., Northfield, Minn.) and
James Pinkett (Fr., St. Paul, Minn./St. Agnes HS).
The offensive line will be very young, with just two starters returning -- center
Adam Hoffmann (Jr., Hastings, Minn.) and tackle
Nate Anderson (Sr., Coon Rapids, Minn.). But the two have established themselves as team leaders, with Hoffmann earning All-MIAC honorable mention honors last year and team co-captain honors this season.
Depth will be an issue with a relatively young defensive unit, but there is talent and some experience among the six returning defensive starters.
Up front, Augsburg's defensive line features two returning starters, end
Joe Cullen (Jr., Coon Rapids, Minn.) and tackle
Sam Harmer (Sr., Silver Bay, Minn./William M. Kelley HS). The duo earned All-MIAC honorable mention honors with outstanding 2002 campaigns, as Cullen made 51 tackles (23 solo) with three sacks, and Harmer had 45 tackles (18 solo), including a team-high 10 tackles for loss. Two key reserves from last season should step into the other two starting roles on the line in Augsburg's 4-3 alignment --
Jacob Koelln (So., Rochester, Minn./John Marshall HS) and
Chike Ochiagha (Jr., Savage, Minn./Holy Angels HS).
The linebacking corps is relatively deep, led by senior co-captain
Brandon Fox (Sr., Springfield, Minn.), a three-year stater who accumulated 75 tackles (36 solo), tops among returners, along with five tackles for loss and two interceptions.
John Golnitz (Jr., Green Bay, Wis./Preble HS) was a solid starter last season at linebacker, making 42 tackles (16 solo) with an interception.
Jon Kozitza (Sr., North Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS) has made strong progress at linebacker, and
Kyle Voelz (Jr., Morgan, Minn./Cedar Mountain HS) returns to the team after a year absence,
Jake Schmiesing (Sr., North Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS) has been a solid reserve at linebacker the last two seasons, and should contend for a starting role.
The defensive backfield has plenty of experience, with two starters and three key reserves back. The group, a young one last year, gave up an average of 244.4 passing yards per game last season, including 20 touchdowns, numbers that need to be curtailed, Ross said. Starting safeties
Ross Peroutka (So., Faribault, Minn.) and
Jim Gunderson (Jr., Hastings, Minn.) return to the Auggie defensive backfield. Both had more than 30 tackles last year, with Gunderson recording one interception.
Major Williams (Jr., Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Washington HS),
Taylor Kroger (So., Cottonwood, Minn./Lakeview HS) and
Jordan Hastings (So., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) also return to the defensive backfield with significant experience, with Williams and Hastings each recording an interception last year.
Punter
Nick Schlieman (So., Burnsville, Minn.) made an immediate impact in his first season last year, as the lone Auggie -- and the lone freshman in the MIAC -- to earn All-MIAC first-team honors. Schlieman averaged 38.5 yards per punt last year, the best average for an Auggie in recent memory, placing 14 punts inside the 20, and booming 27 punts of 40 yards or more and seven of 50 yards or more. Schlieman will also be asked to add the team's placekicking duties to his resume this season, Osberg noted.
Slowon and Smith will likely be asked to fill duties on special teams as return specialists on both kicks and punts. Slowon averaged 20.6 yards per kick return, while Smith was Augsburg's primary returner on both kicks and punts in 2001.
SCOUTING THE JIMMIES: Jamestown College finished 5-5 overall, 5-4 in the DAC-10 conference last season. This year, conference coaches picked Jamestown to finish fifth in the 10-team conference, with defending conference co-champion University of Mary (N.D.) the top team in the preseason poll.
Jamestown is definitely a running team. Last season, the Jimmies averaged 274.1 rushing yards per game -- tops in the DAC-10 and fourth-best in the NAIA -- while averaging just 76.7 passing yards per game -- last in the league. Twelve starters return, including both starting running backs. Sophomore tailback Emannuel Cannady (So., La Crosse, Wis.) rushed for 734 yards on 114 carries with four touchdowns last season, while fullback Jake Wateland (Jr., Wahpeton, N.D.) rushed for 400 yards and a touchdown. Corey Urban (So., Owatonna, Minn.), a transfer from Rochester (Minn.) Community College, joins the Jimmies in the backfield.
A new quarterback will guide the Jimmie offense -- Danny Wirtzberger (So., Havre, Mont.), backed up by Corey Rood (Jr., Fingal, N.D.). However, three starters are lost on the offensive line. Second-team All-DAC-10 tight end Jarrod Griggs (Sr., Lubbock, Texas) returns.
On defense, senior linebacker D.J. Fritel (Sr., Watford City, N.D.), a second-team All-DAC-10 selection, returns. He was second on the team in tackles last year. On the defensive line, starters Jake Helmin (Jr., Foley, Minn.) and Brian Nieuwsma (Sr., Strasburg, N.D.) return.
NUMBER CHANGES (THIS WEEK ONLY): Two Auggies will be wearing different numbers for this week only. Defensive lineman
Craig Pike (Jr., Pine Island, Minn.) will wear 48 instead of 37, and offensive lineman
Matt Wong (So., Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) will wear 70 instead of 71.
NEXT WEEK: Augsburg travels to Wisconsin-Eau Claire for its second nonconference game next Saturday (9/13) at 7 p.m. at Carson Park in Eau Claire, Wis. Jamestown opens DAC-10 play at South Dakota Tech next Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at Rapid City, S.D.
