Men's Hockey 1/16/04 -- Augsburg 4, Hamline 2
BOXSCORE
ST. PAUL, Minn. (1/16/04) -- Sophomore Shane Wagner and senior Mike Johnson each tallied power-play goals late in the third period, but the Hamline University men's hockey team couldn't finish a wild comeback, dropping a 4-2 decision against visiting Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game Friday night at the State Fair Coliseum.
Brady Fougner, last week's MIAC Player of the Week, scored two goals for the second game in a row and had an assist to lead the Auggies (4-7-2 overall, 2-2-1 MIAC), who have won four of their last five games.
The Pipers (0-12-0 overall, 0-5 MIAC) trailed 3-0 midway through the third period when Wagner cut the lead to two goals with a power-play goal at 13:56. Wagner took a slapshot from the point that trickled through the legs of Auggie starter
Erik Young.
Johnson made the score 3-2 at the 17:27 mark. Johnson won a scrum in front of the net, jamming the puck past Young. Young argued with the official, drawing a 10-minute misconduct.
Backup goalie
David Nash was brought in for Young who had to serve the penalty, but the Pipers couldn't take advantage -- only attempting one shot on goal in the last 2:33.
The Auggies sealed the win with an empty net goal by Fougner at 19:16.
After a scoreless first period, Augsburg put two quick goals on the board in the second by
David May at 1:44 and
Tony Beaulieu at 2:51. Fougner tallied his first goal at the 10:09 mark of the third period.
Hamline goaltender John Harstad made 41 saves in the contest. Young stopped 27 shots for Augsburg.
The two teams will play again Saturday (1/17) night at the Augsburg Ice Arena in Minneapolis. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m.
