LeVesseur sets school record with 4 rushing TDs, throws for 2 TDs, Augsburg gains first win of season with 42-10 triumph at Carleton

Football 10/2/04 -- Augsburg 42, Carleton 10

BOXSCORE

NORTHFIELD, Minn. (10/2/04) -- Quarterback Marcus LeVesseur (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn./Bloomington Kennedy HS) set a new Augsburg College single-game record with four rushing touchdowns, rushing for 158 yards and throwing for 137 more, as Augsburg sprinted past host Carleton College 42-10 in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference football game Saturday afternoon at Laird Stadium.

LeVesseur, in his second collegiate start at quarterback, was a part of all six Auggie touchdowns, as he rushed for four and threw for the other two, both to wide receiver Yarzue Slowon (Sr., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS).

Augsburg won its first game of the season after three last-minute losses in moving to 1-3 overall, 1-1 in MIAC play. Carleton dropped to 0-4 overall, 0-3 in MIAC play. Augsburg won its eighth game in a row over Carleton in the all-time series between the two schools, now tied at 12-12-0.

LeVesseur's touchdowns, on rushes of five, 11, 10 and three yards, broke the previous school record for single-game rushing touchdowns of three, set by Marty Alger in a 1993 game against St. Olaf, Mike Strandness in a 1994 game against Carleton, T.J. Bramwell in a 2002 game against Dakota State (S.D.) and Ben Paul in a 2003 game against Carleton.

His four touchdowns tied a school single-game record for overall touchdowns of four, set three times before by Auggie receivers: Karl Sneider in a 1966 game against Macalester, Scott Hvistendahl in a 1998 game against Mayville State (N.D.), and Mark Johnson in a 2001 game against Carleton.

Augsburg outgained Carleton by a 350-231 margin, pouring out 213 rushing yards compared to just 92 for the Knights. LeVesseur was a part of 295 of the 350 Auggie offensive yards, rushing for 158 yards on 26 carries and completing 12-of-20 passes for 137 yards. The game marked LeVesseur's second-straight 100-yard rushing game, after rushing for 135 yards on 23 carries in last Saturday's loss to St. Thomas.

After a close start to the game, with Augsburg leading just 14-10, the Auggies erupted with 28 straight points in the late second quarter and second half. Augsburg dominated the second half, outgaining Carleton by a 165-124 margin. Augsburg also dominated defensively, with four sacks.

A 10-play, 60-yard drive produced Augsburg's first touchdown, as the Auggies pounded out 44 yards on the ground and capping it off with LeVesseur's five-yard rushing score. But Carleton tied it up on the ensuing kickoff, as R.J. Jackson (Fr., Roseville, Minn./De La Salle HS) returned the kickoff 95 yards for the Knights' first special-teams touchdown of the season.

After a 26-yard kickoff return by Slowon, Augsburg went to the air on its next drive, as LeVesseur completed three of four passes, including a 21-yard strike to Ben Bothun (Sr., Dawson, Minn./Dawson-Boyd HS) and a seven-yard touchdown strike to a leaping Slowon in the front corner of the end zone.

Carleton had a 13-play drive to start the second quarter, but were hampered by an illegal-block penalty and a fumbled lateral pass. The Knights cut the lead to 14-10 on a 29-yard field goal by Pat Barry (Sr., Hercules, Calif./St. Mary's HS). That was the closest Carleton would get, however, as Augsburg took control after that point.

Deep in Carleton territory late in the second quarter, a special-teams rush by Augsburg's Craig Pike (Sr., Pine Island, Minn.) forced Carleton punter Luke Muellerleile (Jr., White Bear Lake, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) to attempt a pass from his end zone, which fell incomplete and gave Augsburg the ball at the Carleton 16-yard line. A pass-interference penalty put the ball on the seven, and two plays later, LeVesseur threw his second touchdown pass to Slowon, a left-side swing pass from the option, to give the Auggies a 21-10 lead with 59 seconds to go in the half.

A 52-yard return of the second-half kickoff by Slowon put the Auggies in excellent field position at the Carleton 26, and four plays later, LeVesseur scored on an option keeper to the right side.

After successfully converting a fourth-and-short play in its own territory on an earlier drive in the third quarter, Carleton was forced to attempt a fourth-down conversion late in the quarter, but Pike sacked Carleton quarterback Darren Caspers (So., Bemidji, Minn.), giving the Auggies the ball on downs at the Carleton 45.

On the Auggies' first play on the ensuing drive, LeVesseur appeared to complete a touchdown pass to Slowon, but an official inadvertently blew the whistle after a pass-interference penalty, so the ball was placed at the point of Slowon's catch, the Carleton 12. Two plays later, LeVesseur scampered 10 yards for his third rushing touchdown of the day.

A 10-play, 52-yard drive, with 22 yards coming on six rushes by LeVesseur, gave the Auggies the final margin of victory, as LeVesseur scored on a three-yard plunge for his fourth score.

Slowon caught three passes for 42 yards, while Bothun had two catches for 37 yards and Andrew Neumann (So., Somerset, Wis.) caught two passes for 29 yards. Steve Houser (Jr., Zimmerman, Minn./Elk River HS) rushed for 33 yards on six carries.

Jackson led Carleton with 45 yards rushing on 13 carries, while Wade Thompson So., Peterson, Minn./Rushford-Peterson HS) rushed for 40 yards on 13 carries. Caspers completed 15-of-27 passes for 139 yards, with Jackson catching three balls for 50 yards. Mike Kootsikas (So., Rosemount, Minn.) caught three passes for 45 yards and Thompson caught five passes for 20.

Defensively, Augsburg was paced by Mike Matson (So., Cedar, Minn./St. Francis HS), who had 2.0 sacks among his six tackles (three solo). Pike had 1.5 sacks and seven tackles (two solo). Chike Ochiagha (Jr., Savage, Minn./Holy Angels HS) led the Auggies with nine tackles (two solo), while Ross Peroutka (Jr., Faribault, Minn.), Jim Gunderson (Jr., Hastings, Minn.) and John Golnitz (Sr., Green Bay, Wis./Preble HS) had seven tackles each.

Randy Foss (So., Hastings, Minn.) led Carleton with 11 tackles (six solo), while Ben Olson (Sr., Glenwood, Minn./Minnewaska Area HS) had nine tackles (four solo). Muellerleile had seven tackles and an interception.

Augsburg returns home to Edor Nelson Field next Saturday (10/9) at 1 p.m., hosting Gustavus Adolphus in the Auggies' annual Homecoming game. Carleton returns to action next Saturday at 1 p.m. with the annual game for the Goat Trophy, taking on crosstown rival St. Olaf at the Oles' Manitou Field in Northfield.

LAST YEAR: Ben Paul tied an Augsburg single-game school record with three rushing touchdowns, as the Auggies shut out Carleton 19-0 on Oct. 4, 2003 at Augsburg's Edor Nelson Field. Augsburg put together 418 yards of total offense -- 224 rushing and 218 passing -- to claim the win.

Steve Houser rushed for a career-best 128 yards on 29 carries to lead the Auggies, while Paul rushed nine times for 38 yards. His touchdowns of three, six and 12 yards tied him for the school's mark for single-game rushing touchdowns. T.J. Bramwell accomplished the feat in a 2002 game, while Marty Alger scored three rushing TDs in a 1993 game and Mike Strandness did the same in a 1994 game.

The Auggies had 81 offensive plays to Carleton's 68, and limited the Knights to 281 yards of total offense (86 yards rushing, 195 passing). Augsburg held the ball for 33:13 compared to 26:47 for the Knights. Augsburg took advantage of three Carleton turnovers -- all on rushing fumbles near the line of scrimmage -- turning two into touchdowns.

On Carleton's first drive of the game, the Knights turned the ball over on a fumble at their own 36-yard line. Seven rushing plays later, Paul scored from three yards out. Late in the second quarter, Augsburg struck paydirt again. Two long passes from Tony George -- a 23-yarder to Jamie Smith and a 22-yarder to Andrew Neumann -- set up Paul for a six-yard rushing score with 3:25 left in the half.

The teams exchanged punts in the third quarter before Augsburg shut the door on the Knights early in the fourth quarter. Carleton had its longest sustained drive of the game -- a nine-play, 80-yard drive -- before fumbling the ball at the Augsburg 3-yard line. Augsburg then took the ball 97 yards in nine plays, which included a 49-yard pass from George to Yarzue Slowon. The drive was capped on a 12-yard rushing score by Paul to put a close on the shutout victory.

George threw for 200 yards, completing 14 of 27 yards. Slowon caught three passes for 90 yards, Neumann had four catches for 59 yards and Smith caught three passes for 44 yards.

Augsburg's defense played a huge role in the victory, claiming four sacks, forcing one fumble and accumulating 13 tackles for loss and four pass breakups. Brandon Fox had 12 tackles (five solo), including two for loss and a fumble recovery. Joe Cullen had nine tackles (three solo), with 1.5 sacks and two tackles for loss, and John Golnitz had nine tackles (one solo). Sam Harmer had four tackles for loss and a sack. Taylor Kroger had two fumble recoveries in the game.

Carleton quarterback Darren Caspers, making his second career start, threw for 195 yards, completing 14 of 31 passes. Nate Flaherty caught five passes for 115 yards, including a 46-yarder in the Knights' long fourth-quarter drive. Dale Williams caught three passes for 32 yards. Erik Fisher, the leading rusher in the MIAC entering Saturday's game (125.7 yards per game in league play), led the Knights with 60 rushing yards on 19 carries, while Caspers had 27 rushing yards on 12 carries.

Carleton's defense was led by Luke Mullerleile, who had 14 tackles (five solo). Randy Foss had 13 tackles (one solo) and Andrew Wild had 12 tackles (two solo). Nick Brooke claimed a second-quarter interception, and Tim Blaha had a sack.

AUGGIES DROP TO 0-3 WITH ANOTHER LAST-MINUTE LOSS : Walter Dosh rushed for 82 yards on 20 carries and had a 10-yard touchdown run with 1:55 left in the fourth quarter, as St. Thomas rallied for a 28-21 victory over host Augsburg last Saturday at Edor Nelson Field. St. Thomas rallied from a 14-0 first-quarter deficit to claim the victory. Augsburg dropped to 0-3, having lost all three games in the final two minutes of the fourth quarter.

Augsburg led 14-7 at halftime, but several big special teams plays enabled St. Thomas to get back into the game. On St. Thomas' first drive of the third quarter, the Tommies used a fake punt run and took advantage of a fumbled punt return to get in position for a field goal, but a 25-yard attempt by Adam Valenta hit the crossbar. However, on the next drive, St. Thomas' Ben Kessler blocked an Augsburg punt, which Luke Rezac returned 18 yards for a touchdown.

A special teams play enabled Augsburg to re-take the lead, as Marcus LeVesseur (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn./Bloomington Kennedy HS) returned the ensuing kickoff 63 yards to the St. Thomas 27-yard line. Six plays later, LeVesseur threw a 12-yard scoring pass to Ty Closson (Sr., Northfield, Minn.), giving the Auggies a 21-14 lead. On the second drive of the fourth quarter, St. Thomas' Peter Ridley scored on a 62-yard punt return, tying the game at 21-21.

Augsburg turned the ball over five times in the game, including two interceptions by the Tommies' Steve Groth on the Auggies' final two drives. Groth's first pickoff of a LeVesseur pass gave the Tommies the ball at their own 31-yard line with 3:33 left in the game. The Tommies drove the ball 69 yards in seven plays, setting up Dosh' 10-yard touchdown. Augsburg drove the ball to near midfield on its final drive, before Groth claimed his second pickoff on a bobbled pass at the Tommie 33-yard line with 1:13 remaining.

Augsburg took the early lead with scores on two of its first three drives of the game. A nine-play, 61-yard drive resulted in the Auggies' first score, a 20-yard pass from LeVesseur to Yarzue Slowon (Sr., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS). On the Auggies' next drive, LeVesseur scampered 62 yards on an option run to the Tommie 2-yard line, and Steve Houser (Jr., Zimmerman, Minn./Elk River HS) capped the drive with a two-yard plunge for the touchdown.

LeVesseur, making his first collegiate start at quarterback after platooning with Tony George (Jr., Blaine, Minn.) in Augsburg's first two games, compiled 149 passing yards on 10-of-30 passing. He also had 198 all-purpose yards -- 135 rushing yards on 23 carries and his 63 yards on the kickoff return.

Houser rushed for 63 yards on 17 carries, and Slowon produced 170 all-purpose yards -- catching three passes for 56 yards, returning five punts for four yards and four kickoffs for 110 yards.

Augsburg's defense was led by Jordan Hastings (Jr., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS), who had 13 tackles (four solo). John Golnitz (Sr., Green Bay, Wis./Preble HS) and Andy Matzke (Jr., Faribault, Minn.) had nine tackles apiece, and Joe Cullen (Sr., Coon Rapids, Minn.) had three tackles for loss, including two sacks.

IF FOOTBALL GAMES WERE 58 MINUTES LONG INSTEAD OF 60 ... : Augsburg dropped its third straight fourth-quarter loss last week. In each of the three games, opponents have either taken the lead or overcome ties in the final two minutes. In the three losses, Augsburg has held the lead for 96 minutes, 20 seconds -- 53.5 percent of the 180 combined minutes in the three games. The three games have been tied for 55:29 (30.8 percent), and opponents have held leads for just 28:11 (15.7 percent).

FIRST CAREER START FOR MARCUS LEVESSEUR: Marcus LeVesseur (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn./Bloomington Kennedy HS), an all-state quarterback in high school and two-time Division III national champion wrestler at Augsburg (84-0 in his two seasons), started his first collegiate game at quarterback in Augsburg's 28-21 loss to St. Thomas on Saturday. LeVesseur was part of 347 of Augsburg's 534 total yards (total offense plus return yards) in the game. He compiled 149 passing yards on 10-of-30 passing. He also had 198 all-purpose yards -- 135 rushing yards on 23 carries and 63 yards on a fourth-quarter kickoff return that set up Augsburg's final touchdown of the day.

FIRST COLLEGIATE CATCH, FIRST COLLEGIATE TD: Augsburg's Ty Closson (Sr., Northfield, Minn.), primarily a blocking tight end throughout his career, made his first collegiate reception a positive one, as he caught a 12-yard touchdown pass from LeVesseur in the fourth quarter on Saturday against St. Thomas.

MOVING UP THE SACK LADDER: Augsburg defensive end Joe Cullen (Sr., Coon Rapids, Minn.) compiled two sacks in the game against St. Thomas, giving him a team-high four sacks this season and 17.0 on his career. His career total moves him into fifth place in school history in career sacks; the school record is 28.5, set by Bob Anderson from 1992-95. Fourth on the record list is Matt Chappuis, who had 22.5 sacks from 1998-2001.

MOVING UP THE RECEIVING YARDAGE LADDER: Augsburg wide receiver Yarzue Slowon (Sr., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) surpassed the 1,500-yard mark in career receiving yardage, catching three passes for 56 yards against St. Thomas. Slowon now has 1,535 receiving yards on 112 catches (13.7 yards per catch), putting him in sixth place in school history in receiving yards. He has the potential to become just the fourth Augsburg player ever to surpass 2,000 career receiving yards; the school record is 4,696, set by Scott Hvistendahl from 1994-98 (third-best in Division III history, fifth-best in NCAA all-divisions history). Slowon is in his third Augsburg season; he played his freshman year at North Dakota State.

HOUSER CLOSING IN ON 1,000 CAREER RUSHING YARDS: Running back Steve Houser (Jr., Zimmerman, Minn./Elk River HS) has the potential to eclipse the 1,000-yard career rushing milestone this season. A two-year starter, Houser now has 809 career rushing yards on 207 carries (3.9 yards per carry). Augsburg's school record for career rushing yards is 2,226, set by Marty Alger from 1991-95. Three running backs in school history have eclipsed the 2,000-yard barrier -- Alger, Wayne Graves (2,059 yards, 1970-73) and Dan Roff (2,042, 1978-81).

SEVEN INTERCEPTIONS ALREADY THIS SEASON: Augsburg's experienced secondary has played a big role in the team's close games to start the season. The Auggies already have seven interceptions -- third-best overall in the MIAC behind Bethel's 10 and St. John's 8. Last year, Augsburg had nine interceptions in its 10 games.

Against Wartburg (Iowa) on Sept. 11, Augsburg picked off five passes. Andy Matzke (Jr., Faribault, Minn.) and Jordan Hastings (Jr., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) had two pickoffs apiece, with Ross Peroutka (Jr., Faribault, Minn.) added another interception. Hastings returned one of his interceptions for a 64-yard touchdown in the third quarter.

Against North Central (Ill.) on Sept. 18, Augsburg claimed two second-quarter interceptions, both by Ricky Schreier (So., Maplewood, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS). His second pickoff, with a 39-yard return giving the Auggies the ball at the North Central 4-yard line, led to an Augsburg TD, as three plays later, the Auggies converted a 10-yard touchdown pass.

NEW ADDITION TO AUGGIE DEFENSE: Chris Abbott (Sr., Inver Grove Heights, Minn./St. Thomas Academy HS) has been added to the Augsburg defense, and is listed as a starting cornerback for Saturday's game. Abbott was a late addition to the Auggie roster, having transferred from South Dakota State University. He appeared in 12 games over the last two seasons at SDSU as a reserve defensive back, with nine tackles (six solo).

OSBERG NOW AUGSBURG'S ALL-TIME FOOTBALL VICTORY LEADER: Augsburg head coach Jack Osberg has been the architect of a rebirth of Augsburg College football since he was named head coach in 1991. Last season, Osberg passed his former coach, Edor Nelson, to become the winningest coach in school history. Osberg, a 1962 Augsburg graduate, is in his 14th season with the Auggies and has a 60-74 career record. Nelson went 56-118-10 from 1947-69. Osberg also has the most MIAC wins (48-67-0) of any Augsburg coach, and his career overall winning percentage of .448 is second-best in school history. Augsburg has had seven .500-or-above seasons under Osberg, the second-most for a coach in school history. Nelson had eight in his 23 years. Bill Caris (1972-75) was 19-19, for the school's best winning percentage of .500. Osberg has the third-longest tenure among current MIAC football coaches, behind St. John's John Gagliardi (56th season, 52nd at St. John's in 2004) and Bethel's Steve Johnson (16th season).

HIGH-PROFILE AUGGIE WRESTLERS PULLING DOUBLE-DUTY: Augsburg has developed a reputation as the most dominant team in small-college wrestling. Augsburg has won a record eight NCAA Division III national titles (1991, 1993, 1995, 1997, 1998, 2000, 2001, 2002), while finishing second seven times (1984, 1990, 1992, 1996, 1999, 2003, 2004).

This season, several Augsburg wrestlers are pulling double-duty as members of the football team. The highest-profile wrestler playing football this season is quarterback Marcus LeVesseur (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn./Bloomington Kennedy HS), who has won two straight national titles at 157 pounds. He is 84-0 in his two seasons at Augsburg.

Another wrestling All-American, Joe Cullen (Sr., Coon Rapids, Minn.), is a two-time All-MIAC football honorable mention selection on the defensive line. He finished seventh nationally at 197 pounds in the 2004 wrestling national championships. Andrew Neumann (So., Somerset, Wis.), also a 197-pound wrestler, is Augsburg's starting tight end. Last season, Neumann caught 44 passes for 498 yards and a touchdown, the most catches and yards for an Auggie tight end since 1997.

Greg Brendemuehl (Jr., Medford, Minn.), a 2003 wrestling All-American (125 pounds, 6th place), is in his first season as a defensive back for the Auggies, joining fellow wrestler Kirk Rall (Jr., West St. Paul, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) in the backfield, with Rich Miller (Jr., Anoka, Minn.) at linebacker. Transferring to Augsburg this year is Zak Jensen (Jr., Hopkins, Minn.) from Northern Illinois, who will play football (defensive line) and wrestle. He was a two-time state wrestling qualifier (2000, 2001) at Hopkins HS.

One other football/wrestling connection: Johnny Grygelko (Fr., Loretto, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville HS), grandson of former Augsburg coach John Grygelko (1972-80), is a linebacker this season. He was a two-time state competitor in high school wrestling.

A story on Augsburg's football/wrestling connection is online on the Wrestling Mall website: http://www.wrestlingmall.com/htmls/news.asp?Cat=3&View=9470

SCOUTING THE KNIGHTS: Under fourth-year head coach Chris Brann, Carleton is continuing the rebuilding process, as it aims to improve from last season's 3-7 record, a finish that featured three straight wins to close the campaign. Carleton will have to improve with a very young roster, with 20 freshmen and 22 sophomores among its 66 players. The Knights have only six seniors on the roster.

This year, Carleton is off to an 0-3 start, dropping a 16-10 home decision to Lake Forest (Ill.) on Sept. 4, a 55-7 loss to defending national champion St. John's on Sept. 18 and a 40-15 loss last Saturday at Concordia-Moorhead.

At Concordia, the Cobbers used a pair of Carleton turnovers in the second quarter to turn a 7-0 contest into a 27-0 halftime lead, cruising to the home victory. The Knights trailed only 7-0 after the first quarter to the 14th-ranked Cobbers, but fumbled the ball away twice in the second quarter as the hosts reeled off 20 points in the quarter.

Mike Kootsikas (So., Rosemount, Minn.) tallied career bests with five catches for 80 yards and quarterback Darren Caspers (So., Bemidji, Minn.) completed 14 passes for 136 yards and one score. Randy Foss (So., Hastings, Minn.) paced Carleton with 10 tackles, while Pat Frett (So., Ann Arbor, Mich./Ann Arbor-Huron HS) tallied seven tackles.

The Knights scored all their points in the fourth quarter. The defense forced a fumble at the Cobber 35-yard line and Caspers hooked up with Kootsikas for a 30-yard strike, followed by a toss to Ben Cooprider (Jr., DeKalb, Ill.) for five yards and the score. A.J. Cookas (Fr., Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS) scored his first collegiate points, running in for the two-point conversion. The Knights tacked on a late score when Matt Phillips (So., Woodstock, Ill.) blocked a punt and recovered the ball at the Cobber 1-yard line, with Caspers rushing it in with 12 seconds left.
