Millie Suk * (Jr., Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) scored the game winning goal off a corner kick by teammate
Nora Austin * (Jr., St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS), lifting Augsburg College to a 2-1 overtime victory over Hamline University in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's soccer game on Wednesday evening at Augsburg's Edor Nelson Field.
Suk, who was expected to sit out Wednesday's game after suffering a hyperextended knee injury in Saturday's loss at Concordia-Moorhead, entered the game in the 78th minute with the score tied at 0-0. Two minutes later, Suk assisted on a goal from
Noreen Hogan (Fr., Moline, Ill./Alleman HS). Hogan received a give-and-go pass from Suk for her first collegiate goal.
However, Hamline tied the game four minutes later, as Hannah Fetzer (Fr., Brookings, S.D.) notched her first collegiate goal, sprinting for the game-tying tally on a feed from Ann Donner (So., Stillwater, Minn.).
Seven minutes into the first overtime session, Augsburg scored the game-winner, converting on its 13th corner kick of the game. Austin passed the ball across the crease to Suk, who deposited it past Hamline goalkeeper Betsy Seal (So., Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy HS) for her team-leading ninth goal of the season.
Augsburg, now 8-6-0 overall and 6-3-0 in MIAC play, played its fourth overtime game in a row and fifth in its last six starts. Hamline is now 4-10-1 overall and 1-7-0 in MIAC play, dropping its eighth game in its last 10 starts and fourth in a row in league play.
Augsburg moved into sole possesion of fourth place in the MIAC standings in pursuit of its first-ever MIAC postseason playoff berth. The top four teams make the MIAC postseason playoffs; Augsburg, with 12 conference points, is two points ahead of St. Thomas (7-8-0 overall, 5-4-0 MIAC) and St. Olaf (9-5-0 overall, 5-4-0 MIAC), and three points ahead of St. Benedict (8-5-1 overall, 4-3-1 MIAC). Augsburg, St. Thomas and St. Olaf have two conference games remaining; St. Benedict has three conference games left.
Wednesday's game was a rescheduled match from Sept. 14, when the originally scheduled contest was called due to a severe thunderstorm.
Augsburg ended up outshooting Hamline by a 31-10 margin and held a 13-2 edge in corner kicks. Seal made 13 saves for Hamline, while
Liz Osterman (Fr., Lincoln, Neb./Southeast HS) made four saves for Augsburg.
Augsburg returns to action on Thursday (10/21) at 7 p.m., with a nonconference game against Martin Luther College at Edor Nelson Field. Hamline returns to action on Saturday (10/23) at 1 p.m., hosting Bethel.
