Women's Soccer 10/23/04 -- Augsburg 1, Carleton 0

BOXSCORE

MINNEAPOLIS (10/23/04) -- Becky Lewis (So., Duluth, Minn./Duluth Marshall HS) scored on a header from Millie Suk * (Sr., Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) in the fourth minute, providing all the scoring Augsburg College would need in a 1-0 triumph over Carleton College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's soccer game Saturday night at Augsburg's Edor Nelson Field.

Liz Osterman (Fr., Lincoln, Neb./Lincoln Southeast HS) made seven saves to pick up her fourth shoutout of the season for the Auggies, as Augsburg inched closer to clinching its first-ever berth in the four-team MIAC postseason playoffs.

Augsburg is now 10-6-0 overall, clinching double-digit victories for the third straight season. Augsburg is now 32-16-4 over the last three seasons, one win shy of the best three-year stretch in school history (1995-97, 33-14-4). Augsburg improved to 7-3-0 in MIAC play, winning seven games in league play for the first time in school history.

Carleton dropped to 8-6-0 overall, 7-2-0 in MIAC play.

With the win, Augsburg moves into a tie for third place in the MIAC standings with Carleton; Augsburg has one league game remaining against St. Olaf on Wednesday (10/27) at 2:30 p.m., while Carleton has two league games left, hosting MIAC leader Macalester on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m., and playing at St. Olaf next Saturday (10/30) at 1 p.m.

Augsburg now has tiebreaker advantages, thanks to head-to-head victories, against three of its four rivals for the final two spots in the MIAC postseason playoffs, having now beaten Carleton, St. Benedict (4-4-1 MIAC, nine points) and St. Thomas (5-4-0 MIAC, 10 points).

Augsburg jumped on the board early, as Suk moved to the right edge of the penalty box and popped a centering pass to Lewis, who maneuvered behind Carleton goalkeeper Jenna Bernhardson (Fr., Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) to head the ball in the net for her sixth goal of the season.

Augsburg's defense played solid, with Osterman making several key saves en route to her shutout. Carleton outshot Augsburg by a 13-7 margin, though Augsburg had an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Bernhardson played the first half in goal for Carleton, with Emily Muirhead (Fr., Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest HS) relieving her in the second half. Neither Carleton goalie made a save in the game.
