Football 10/30/04 -- Concordia-Moorhead 31, Augsburg 6
BOXSCORE
MOORHEAD, Minn. (10/30/04) -- Concordia College-Moorhead clinched a share of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference football championship and the league's automatic berth into the NCAA Division III national playoffs with a 31-6 victory over visiting Augsburg College on Saturday at Jake Christiansen Stadium.
Playing in a steady downpour and on a field that had been saturated by over an inch of rain from the night before, Concordia scored the first 31 points in the game and convincingly put away their first MIAC title since 1995. The win also gives the Cobbers the automatic bid into the NCAA playoffs since the only team that could tie Concordia for the title is St. Thomas, who the Cobbers beat 20-3 earlier in the year.
Brian Schumacher (Jr., Thompson, N.D.) continued to be the catalyst for the Cobber offense. The sophomore signal-caller ran for two touchdowns and threw for more than 150 yards in leading Concordia to the title-clinching win. Schumacher finished the game with 67 rushing yards on 16 carries. He was an economic 9-for-14 through the air and totaled 164 passing yards.
The Cobber offense racked up 415 yards in total offense. Concordia ran for 251 yards and had 164 yards through the air. Concordia limited Augsburg to just 142 yards of total offense on the day.
Ed Oehlers (Sr., North Branch, Minn.) and Travis Christensen (Sr., Battle Lake, Minn.) scored the other touchdowns for Concordia, marking the second straight game the senior running backs have punched through into the end zone. It was Oehlers team-leading seventh TD. He finished the game with 55 hard-nosed rushing yards on 14 carries. For Christensen it was his third TD of the year.
Senior wide receiver Andrew Passanante (Sr., Hawley, Minn.) returned to his old form against the Auggies. After being held for under 100 yards against St. John's and Bethel, Passanante tore through the Auggie defense for 164 yards on six catches. Shawn Reile (Sr., Moorhead, Minn.) collected a pair of receptions and had 26 receiving yards.
Jacob Odermann (Jr., Belfield, N.D./Dickinson Trinity HS) came in for Schumacher in the third quarter and was able to run through the tired Augsburg defense. Odermann gained 69 yards on only eight carries. He also broke off the game's longest run when he scampered 49 yards late in the third quarter.
The Cobber defense put a stranglehold on the potent Augsburg running game through most of the game. Concordia limited the Auggies to only 142 yards in total offense. The Cobbers conceded only 46 yards through the air and punished the Augsburg ground game, allowing only 96 yards. It is only the second time all season that the Auggies have been held under 120 yards in rushing.
Augsburg was led by junior quarterback
Marcus LeVesseur (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn./Bloomington Kennedy HS). The two-time wrestling national champion was the workhorse for the Auggie offense on the day. He had 33 carries and amassed 83 yards. He was also 9-for-21 for 46 yards in the passing department. He scored the only touchdown of the day for Augsburg when he went over from one-yard out late in the fourth quarter.
Defensively, Concordia was led the linebacking trio of Doug Runke (Sr., Willmar, Minn.), Josh Dietz (Sr., Glencoe, Minn./Glencoe-Silver Lake HS) and Ross Hebrink (Sacred Heart, Minn./R-C-W HS). Runke had six solo tackles and 10 total, while Dietz finished with seven tackles and Hebrink added six.
Augsburg's
Andrew Neumann (So., Somerset, Wis.) had game highs in solo tackles (7) and overall tackles (11).
Andy Matzke (Jr., Faribault, Minn.) and
Jordan Hastings (Jr., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) had interceptions for the Auggies.
Concordia will finish the MIAC regular season next Saturday (11/6) when it plays at St. Olaf at 1:00pm. If the Cobbers can beat the Oles, Concordia will clinch the title outright for the first time since 1986.
Augsburg will travel for the second week in a row next Saturday at 1 p.m., playing at Bethel.

LAST YEAR: Setting a single-game school record with 517 team rushing yards, Concordia-Moorhead rallied from an early deficit to dominate in a 32-13 triumph over host Augsburg on Oct. 11, 2003 at Edor Nelson Field.
The 517 rushing yards for the Cobbers, on 64 attempts, fell 45 short of the MIAC's single-game record, 562 yards by St. John's in a 1976 game against Macalester. Concordia's previous single-game rushing record was 454 yards, set in a 1995 game against St. Olaf. Concordia had just 12 passing yards on one completion in seven attempts in the game, held in a driving rainstorm and windy conditions at Augsburg.
Running back Robert Clark rushed 19 times for 182 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Cobbers. He was one of three Cobbers to rush for more than 100 yards in the game, with quarterback Ryan Hebrink rushing for 141 yards on 17 carries and a touchdown, and running back Jeremy Hinderks rushing 17 times for 103 yards and two scores.
Augsburg had 325 yards of total offense in a losing effort. Augsburg took an early lead, behind the play of freshman quarterback
Troy Deden, making his first collegiate start. Deden completed 15 of 31 passes with two interceptions for 244 yards and a touchdown in his collegiate debut. However, Augsburg rushed for just 81 yards on 35 attempts in the game.
The Auggies jumped on the board first, as Deden capped a 13-play, 78-yard drive over 6:09 with a one-yard plunge. The drive included 10 rushing plays, the biggest play a 34-yard scamper by Ben Paul.
Concordia tied the game late in the quarter, after taking the ball at its own 42-yard line following a botched snap on a field-goal attempt by the Auggies. A three-play, 58-yard drive was culminated in a 33-yard rushing score by Clark.
But the Auggies took the lead again on its next play from scrimmage, as Deden connected with
Jamie Smith for an 80-yard touchdown.
Another big play was the feature of the next drive, as Concordia's Josh Vickerman returned the Auggie kickoff 70 yards to the Augsburg 19-yard line. Four plays later, Hinderks scored his first touchdown on a seven-yard run, giving the Cobbers the lead for good.
After that score, the game was dominated by the Cobbers' rushing attack. Concordia did not gain a single passing yard after its first drive in the first quarter, letting the run dictate the tempo of play in the rainy conditions.
Just before halftime, Concordia scored to cap a nine-play, 80-yard drive, as Clark found an opening and rambled 30 yards for the score, giving the Cobbers a 20-13 halftime lead.
Concordia scored twice more to complete the dominating victory. Hinderks scored his second touchdown on a 19-yard run to complete a 13-play, 80-yard drive in the closing seconds of the third quarter.
Early in the fourth quarter, Jordan Talge stopped an Augsburg drive with an interception at the Concordia 3-yard line, returning it 26 yards. On the subsequent Cobber drive, quarterback Hebrink was the feature player, as he rushed for 68 of the Cobbers' 71 yards on the drive, capping it with a 38-yard scamper for a touchdown to produce the final margin.
Concordia turned the ball over three times on fumbles, but Augsburg could not take advantage of the opportunities, as one drive in the second quarter started at the Concordia 16 was stopped on downs three plays later at the Concordia 41, another drive after a fumble stalled for a punt, and the final drive after a fumble was stopped by an interception by Concordia's Vickerman.
In addition to the three Cobbers who gained more than 100 yards on the ground, Brian Schumacher (So., Thompson, N.D.), one of three Cobber quarterbacks used in the game, had four carries for 41 yards.
Augsburg was led by Paul's 60 rushing yards on 11 carries, with
Nick Sanchez gaining 45 yards on 16 carries. Deden passed for 244 yards, with Smith catching five passes for 111 yards.
Andrew Neumann caught five passes for 94 yards, and Yarzue Slowon caught three passes for 51 yards.
Defensively, Josh Dietz led the Cobbers with 12 tackles (two solo) and a forced fumble. Evan Emmerich had nine tackles (two solo), including two for loss, and Doug Runke had eight tackles (one solo). Talge had four passes defensed and an interception, and Travis Almquist had a quarterback sack and two tackles for loss.
Augsburg was paced by
Taylor Kroger, who had 14 tackles (two solo).
Jim Gunderson had 11 tackles (five solo) and two forced fumbles, and Brandon Fox had nine tackles (two solo), including one for loss.
Ricky Schreier and
Jon Kozitza had eight tackles apiece.
AUGGIES GIVE UP 31 STRAIGHT POINTS, FALL 38-13 TO ST. JOHN'S: Freshman quarterback Alex Kofoed threw for 219 yards and two touchdowns, leading St. John's from a second-quarter deficit with 31 unanswered points in a 38-13 victory over host Augsburg last Saturday at Edor Nelson Field. St. John's produced 442 yards of total offense on 87 plays, while limiting Augsburg to 287 yards on 58 plays.
Running back Mike Lofboom rushed for 116 yards and two touchdowns for the Johnnies, while Augsburg was paced by a career-high 111 rushing yards and two long touchdowns from
Jason Potts (Fr., Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS).
St. John's took an early lead on its first drive, moving 59 yards in six plays, including a 40-yard pass from Kofoed to Justin Winkels, to put the ball on the Augsburg 1-yard line. Lofboom plunged for a one-yard score to put the Johnnies up 7-0. But Augsburg answered late in the second quarter to tie the game, as Potts scored his first touchdown on a 45-yard run down the sideline.
Augsburg took advantage of a miscue by the Johnnies to take its only lead of the game. A fumble on a punt return, recovered by
Ricky Schreier (So., Maplewood, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS), put the ball on the Augsburg 44-yard line. On the next play, Potts got a last-second option pitch from quarterback
Marcus LeVesseur (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn./Bloomington Kennedy HS), and sprinted 56 yards to put Augsburg ahead 13-7.
But just before halftime, St. John's took the lead on a textbook possesion drive. After a short punt gave the Johnnies the ball at the Augsburg 48 with 1:56 left in the first half, Kofoed completed six straight passes to place the ball at the Augsburg 1, and Lofboom scored his second rushing touchdown of the day with 29 seconds left, giving the Johnnies a 14-13 advantage at intermission.
The turning point of the game came on two Augsburg drives in the third quarter. On the first drive of the second half, an Augsburg fumble gave the Johnnies the ball at the Augsburg 44. Nine plays later, Brandon Keller kicked a 32-yard field goal to put the Johnnies ahead 17-13.
Later in the quarter, Augsburg elected to go for it on a fourth-down-and-short play at its own 29. Quarterback LeVesseur was stopped short of the first down by defensive lineman Damien Dumonceaux, giving the Johnnies the ball with a short field. Seven plays later, St. John's extended the lead to 24-13 on a Kofoed two-yard touchdown pass to Lee Clintsman.
An interception by Tony Stefensmeier set up another Johnnie score, as Kofoed threw a four-yard scoring strike to Kyle Gearman early in the fourth quarter. A 64-yard run by James Lehner on the Johnnies' next drive put the ball at the Auggie 1, and Lehner punched it in on the next play to cap the scoring.
LeVesseur threw for 104 yards, completing 8-of-15 passes, and rushed for 68 yards on 29 carries. Schreier caught three passes for 43 yards, while
Ben Bothun (Sr., Dawson, Minn./Dawson-Boyd HS) caught two passes for 38 yards.
Augsburg's defense was led by
Andy Matzke (Jr., Faribault, Minn.), who had 16 tackles (seven solo).
Jim Gunderson (Jr., Hastings, Minn.) had 4 tackles (four solo) and a sack, and
Mike Matson (So., Cedar, Minn./St. Francis HS) had 11 tackles (two solo).
Jordan Hastings (Jr., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) had two interceptions and eight tackles (four solo).
HEAD COACH JACK OSBERG TO RETIRE AT END OF SEASON: Last Saturday's game marked the Edor Nelson Field finale for head coach
Jack Osberg, who announced his retirement from coaching at the end of the season (Augsburg plays its final "home" game at the Metrodome on Nov. 12 against St. Olaf). In his 14 seasons of coaching, Osberg was 34-30 in games at Edor Nelson Field, named for his mentor and former coach (56-118-10 from 1947-69).
Osberg, 64, the 13th coach in the 73-season history of Augsburg football, has won a school-record 62 games as head coach (62-76) in his 14 seasons. After completing the 2004 football season, Osberg will remain on the Augsburg staff, assisting in the school's Alumni and Parent Relations and Development areas, to develop connections with athletic alumni and parents.
Assistant Dean for Athletics and Recreation
Jeff Swenson said that a national search for a new head coach will begin following the season, with the goal of having a new head coach hired by the winter months.
Osberg served as Augsburg's defensive coordinator from 1977-84, and was named the Auggies' head coach in 1991.
Under Osberg's leadership, the football program grew in both numbers and victories, and in 1997, Osberg accomplished what no Augsburg football coach had ever done before -- winning the MIAC championship and qualifying for the NCAA Division III national playoffs, while engineering the best record (10-2) in school history. Osberg earned MIAC Coach of the Year honors in 1997.
Osberg surpassed his mentor, Edor Nelson (56-118-10 from 1947-69), as Augsburg's all-time victory leader last season. Osberg also has the most MIAC victories (50-69) of any Augsburg head coach. Osberg had the third-longest tenure of any current MIAC coach, behind Bethel's Steve Johnson (16 seasons) and St. John's John Gagliardi (52 seasons at St. John's, 56 overall).
A 1962 Augsburg graduate and Minneapolis native, Osberg has been involved with the Auggie football program for parts of four decades. A two-time All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference selection as a nose guard/offensive guard, Osberg was a standout football player at Augsburg from 1958-61, also earning team MVP, captain and Lutheran All-American honors. He was inducted into the Augsburg Athletic Hall of Fame in 1979.
Outside of Augsburg, Osberg served as an assistant coach at Minneapolis Roosevelt High School from 1962-70, as a graduate assistant coach on Bob Devaney's staff at Nebraska in 1968-69, and as head coach at Wayzata High School from 1971-76. He taught biology in the Wayzata school district for 20 years and was recognized for his teaching excellence there.
Osberg lives in Plymouth, Minn., with his wife Nina, who recently retired from teaching at Wayzata High School. They have six children: Rich, Jennifer, Peter, Jeff, James and Anne, and five grandchildren: Grace, Johanna, Lydia, Zoe and Mason.
LEVESSEUR BECOMING A MULTIPLE THREAT: In his first season of college football, Augsburg quarterback
Marcus LeVesseur (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn./Bloomington Kennedy HS) has become a multiple threat in Augsburg's revamped offense.
LeVesseur saw his streak of 100-yard rushing games end at four on Saturday, as he was held to 68 yards on 29 carries against St. John's. LeVesseur leads the Auggies in both rushing (721 yards on 159 carries) and passing (902 yards, 70-of-147, 11 TD, 10 INT) this season.
LeVesseur has the potential to become just the second player in school history to rush for more than 1,000 yards in a single season; the school record, 1,011, was set by Marty Alger in 1992.
Among MIAC players (all games), LeVesseur is one of only three players to average more than 100 rushing yards per game. Bethel's Phil Porta averages 165.9; St. Thomas' Peter Ridley averages 109.7, and LeVesseur averages 103.0.
LeVesseur leads the MIAC (all games) in total offense (231.9 yards per game).
In MIAC games only, LeVesseur is second in the conference in rushing (136.8 yards per game in five games), leads the league in total offense (286.4 ypg) and is third in all-purpose yards (164.0 ypg)
In addition, LeVesseur also has 246 kickoff return yards on nine attempts (27.3 yards per return) this season.
After setting a school record with four rushing touchdowns and throwing for two more in Augsburg's 42-10 win over Carleton on Oct. 2, LeVesseur was named MIAC Co-Offensive Player of the Week and Don Hansen's National Weekly Football Gazette Division III Co-National Offensive Player of the Week. Against Gustavus on Oct. 9, LeVesseur rushed for 207 yards on 32 carries, just 10 yards shy of the school's single-game rushing record 217 yards by Marty Alger in a 1993 game.
LeVesseur is in his first season of college football after earning two NCAA Division III national championships at 157 pounds as an Auggie wrestler. He is 84-0 after two seasons at Augsburg, and has yet to lose a collegiate match. Augsburg's wrestling season begins on Saturday with the annual Intrasquad Meet/Alumni Night/Parents Night at Si Melby Hall at 7 p.m.
MOVING UP THE SACK LADDER: Augsburg defensive end
Joe Cullen (Sr., Coon Rapids, Minn.) currently has a team-high 5.5 sacks this season and 18.5 on his career. His career total puts him in fifth place in school history in career sacks; the school record is 28.5, set by Bob Anderson from 1992-95. Fourth on the record list is Matt Chappuis, who had 22.5 sacks from 1998-2001.
HOUSER CLOSING IN ON 1,000 CAREER RUSHING YARDS: Running back
Steve Houser (Jr., Zimmerman, Minn./Elk River HS) is edging closer to the 1,000-yard career rushing milestone this season. A two-year starter, Houser now has 936 career rushing yards on 242 carries (3.9 yards per carry). Augsburg's school record for career rushing yards is 2,226, set by Marty Alger from 1991-95. Three running backs in school history have eclipsed the 2,000-yard barrier -- Alger, Wayne Graves (2,059 yards, 1970-73) and Dan Roff (2,042, 1978-81).
SCOUTING THE COBBERS: After impressive victories over St. John's (21-20) and Bethel (34-23) in consecutive weeks, Concordia-Moorhead has moved up in the national rankings, entering Saturday's game ranked No. 7 in the latest D3football.com national poll, No. 16 in the latest Don Hansen's Football Gazette national poll and No. 8 in the latest American Football Coaches Association national poll.
The Cobbers are now 6-0 in the MIAC and 7-0 overall. They need just one more win in their next two MIAC games to clinch a share of the MIAC championship and the league's automatic berth into the NCAA playoffs. The last time the Cobbers won the MIAC was in 1995 when they shared the title with St. John's. The 7-0 start for head coach Terry Horan's crew marks the most consecutive wins to start a season for Concordia since 1988 when the team went 8-0 and tied for the league title with Hamline.
Concordia overcame a 14-point second quarter deficit to better the Royals 34-23 last Saturday. For the second straight week, Cobber quarterback Brian Schumacher (Jr., Thompson, N.D.) led the offense with his running ability. Schumacher finished the game with 190 yards of rushing and two touchdowns. His 76-yard scamper with 2:36 left in the third quarter gave Concordia their first lead of the game at 28-21.
Bethel running back Phil Porta tore through the Cobber defense in the first half. The sophomore running back accumulated 162 yards on 25 carries in the first two quarters. One of the turning points in the contest was when he had to leave the game with an injury in the third quarter. He finished the day with 31 attempts and 185 yards. But offensively, Bethel was never able to mount an attack after Porta left the game. They had just three first downs in the third quarter and only 108 yards of total offense in the final two periods.
The Cobber offense finished the day with 378 yards of total offense. For the second straight week, the team was held to under 100 yards in passing. Besides his 190 yards on the ground, Schumacher was 8-for-14 for 82 yards and one interception. Almost half of the total passing yardage for the Cobbers cam when Schumacher hooked up with Andrew Passanante (Sr., Hawley, Minn.) for a 37-yard strike in the second quarter.
Ed Oehlers (Sr., North Branch, Minn.) continued to be a force for the Cobbers in short-yardage situations. Oehlers scored another touchdown, giving him six for the year, and ran for 74 yards on 24 carries. Passanante finished the game with five catches for 61 yards.
The Concordia defense once again won the battle of turnovers. The Cobbers came away with three interceptions on the day - returning one for a key third quarter score. Jordan Talge (Sr., Moorhead, Minn.) had his second, two-interception game of the season as he ran his first "pick" of the day 24 yards for a touchdown. The score came at a critical junction of the game. Concordia had just turned the ball over on the Bethel one-yard line after it seemed the Cobbers would push their lead to 34-21. On the third play of the ensuing drive, Bethel quarterback Ben Wetzell rolled to his right in his own end zone and proceeded to overthrew his wide receiver. Talge was in the right place at the right time and ran the ball all the way back for his first collegiate touchdown. Talge's second interception sealed the game for the Cobbers. With time winding down and the Royals behind 34-23, A.J. Parnell lofted a ball over the middle of the field and Talge stepped in to make the play.
Concordia's other interception was made by Tanner Radermacher (Jr., Bellingham, Minn./Ortonville HS). It was Radermacher's third interception in the last two games and gives him five on the season. He is one behind Talge for the team lead.
Josh Dietz (Sr., Glencoe, Minn./Glencoe-Silver Lake HS) led the Cobbers in tackling for the sixth time this season. He recorded six solo tackles and collected 17 total. Eric Preszler (Sr., Rapid City, S.D./Worthington (Minn.) HS) had his most productive statistical game of the season. He recorded six solo tackles and 12 all together.
