Football 11/12/04 -- St. Olaf 45, Augsburg 42 (OT)
BOXSCORE
MINNEAPOLIS (11/12/04) -- Jay Higgins (Fr., Lakeland, Minn./Stillwater HS) caught a 25-yard touchdown pass over the middle from relief quarterback Matt Penz (Fr., Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) on St. Olaf College's first play of its overtime session, giving the Oles a 45-42 victory over host Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference football game Friday night at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome.
Penz played the entire second half at quarterback for the Oles, replacing starter Jason Wilsey (Jr., Columbia Heights, Minn.), who was injured just before halftime. Wilsey threw for 122 yards and three touchdowns, while Penz threw for 203 yards and the game-winning score in the extra session.
St. Olaf finished its season at 7-3 overall, 5-3 in MIAC play, marking just the fifth time the Oles have finished with seven victories since the 1978 season, and the first time since 2000.
The game continues a recent stretch of close games in the series, which St. Olaf now leads 34-13. Nine of the last 12 games in the all-time series have been decided by a touchdown or less.
Augsburg, playing its last game for retiring head coach
Jack Osberg, finished 2-8 overall, 2-6 in MIAC play. Four of the Auggies' eight losses were by a touchdown or less. Osberg finished his 14-year career as Augsburg's head coach with a 62-79 record, setting a school record for victories.
The game also was a record-setter for Augsburg quarterback
Marcus LeVesseur (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn./Bloomington Kennedy HS), who rushed 41 times for 181 yards and three touchdowns, and threw for 162 yards on 15-of-26 with two interceptions. The 41 carries broke a single-game school record for rushing attempts (38 by Hugh Weathers in a 1981 game against Hamline).
LeVesseur also shattered all of Augsburg's single-season rushing records. He became just the second Augsburg player ever to rush for 1,000 yards in a year, as he finished his first collegiate football campaign with single-season records of 1,024 yards on 256 attempts. He also scored a single-season school record 10 rushing touchdowns.
Augsburg's
Nick Schlieman (Jr., Burnsville, Minn.) also tied a school record with a career-long 49-yard field goal, which he hit on the final play of the first half. Schlieman also nailed field goals of 43 yards in the first quarter and 26 yards to end Augsburg's overtime session. He missed a 37-yarder just wide left on the last play of regulation to force overtime tied at 39-39.
Augsburg got the ball first in overtime, and gained to the 8-yard line before a rushing loss to the 9. On the Auggies' seventh play of overtime, Schlieman hit a 26-yard field goal to put Augsburg ahead 42-39. On the Oles' first play from scrimmage in overtime, Penz found a wide-open Higgins sprinting over the middle for the game-winning touchdown.
St. Olaf runing back Preston St. John (Fr., Farmington HS) scored three touchdowns for the Oles, rushing for 57 yards and two scores, while catching a two-yard TD pass in the second quarter. He also threw a touchdown pass on a halfback-option play, a 55-yarder to Andrew Schmiesing (Fr., Stillwater, Minn.) in the third quarter.
Schmiesing caught six passes for 128 yards, one of seven Oles to catch passes in the game. Higgins caught five passes for 65 yards, while St. John had five catches for 35 yards. Higgins also rushed for 73 yards on 17 carries, with two touchdowns.
The game was a back-and-forth offensive shootout, as the teams combined for 1,040 yards of total offense -- Augsburg had 526 yards, while St. Olaf had 514 yards.
Augsburg rushed for 364 yards in the game, including LeVesseur's 181 yards, and 113 yards on six carries by
Steve Houser (Jr., Zimmerman, Minn./Elk River HS), who broke the 1,000-yard barrier for his career. He now has 1,061 yards on 251 career carries. Houser broke loose for a career-best 76-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter and added a five-yard scoring run early in the fourth quarter.
Jason Potts (Fr., Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) had 69 rushing yards on five carries.
Ben Bothun (Sr., Dawson, Minn./Dawson-Boyd HS) caught five passes for 63 yards for the Auggies, while Yarzue Slowon (Sr., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) caught five passes for 52 yards.
St. Olaf's Wilsey threw for three touchdown passes in the first half, completing 9-of-12 passes without an interception. He threw a 24-yard scoring strike to Brandon Joyce (So., Mahtomedi HS) in the first quarter, a 12-yard pass to Higgins later in the quarter, and a two-yard pass to St. John late in the second frame.
Defensively, St. Olaf's Peter St. Lawrence (Fr., Goshen, N.Y.) led all players with 16 tackles (10 solo), while John Davis (Jr., Edina, Minn.) had 11 tackles (seven solo), a sack and an interception. Peter Nelson (So., LeSueur, Minn./LeSueur-Henderson HS) had nine tackles (three solo), and Matt Dean (Jr., Apple Valley, Minn.) had seven tackles and an interception.
Augsburg was led by
Jim Gunderson (Jr., Hastings, Minn.), who had 10 tackles (two solo) and a forced fumble.
Taylor Kroger (Jr., Cottonwood, Minn./Lakeview HS) had nine tackles (one solo), and
Joe Cullen (Sr., Coon Rapids, Minn.) had eight tackles (four solo), three tackles for loss, three quarterback hurries and two sacks, to go with one forced fumble. Cullen finished his career with 20.5 sacks, good for fifth place in school history.

Nick Schlieman (Jr., Burnsville, Minn.) ranks 31st nationally in punting (38.2 yards per punt) and
Jordan Hastings (Jr., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) ranks 15th nationally in interceptions (0.7 per game).
St. Olaf's Nate Johnson ranks 12th nationally in punting (39.8 yards per punt), Matt Dean ranks 35th nationally in passes defended (1.4 per game), and Paul Fortman ranks 32nd nationally in field goals per game (0.8 per game).
LAST YEAR: Yarzue Slowon caught three second-half touchdown passes from
Tony George as Augsburg rallied for a 31-24 victory over St. Olaf on Sept. 20, 2003 at Edor Nelson Field. Slowon caught seven passes for 152 yards to lead the Auggies, while George completed 15 of 31 passes for 243 yards, throwing four touchdown passes without an interception.
Augsburg rallied from a 24-13 third-quarter deficit to claim the victory, outgaining the Oles by a 172-147 margin in the second half and scoring 18 unanswered points. Augsburg gained 346 yards of total offense in the game, compared to 360 for St. Olaf.
The key play in the Auggie second-half comeback came on a fourth-down-and-9 play from the Augsburg 17-yard line late in the third quarter, when the Oles were flagged 15 yards for a roughing-the-kicker penalty, keeping an Augsburg drive alive. Three plays later, George hooked up with Slowon on a 70-yard touchdown pass, cutting the Ole lead to 24-19.
On St. Olaf's next drive, a pass from Brian Senske was intercepted by
Jordan Hastings, who returned the ball 31 yards to the St. Olaf 28. On Augsburg's first play from scrimmage on the ensuing drive, George found Slowon for another touchdown pass to give the Auggies a 25-24 advantage.
Later in the fourth quarter, a St. Olaf drive stalled, and the Oles elected to go for it on fourth down at their own 39-yard line. A fourth-down pass went incomplete, giving the Auggies the ball again with a short field and 9:11 to play. Six plays later, the Auggie combination struck again, as George hooked up with Slowon for a 10-yard scoring pass to produce the final margin of victory.
Augsburg opened the game with a touchdown on its first drive, as George connected with
Jamie Smith for a 15-yard pass, completing a nine-play, 73-yard drive. The Auggies took a 13-0 lead early in the second quarter, when George capped an 11-play, 68-yard drive with a one-yard plunge.
But St. Olaf scored 24 straight points to take the momentum of the game, as well as the lead. Aaron Stinar scored on a one-yard run, to cap a six-play, 74-yard drive aided by a 47-yard flanker option pass from Nate Lund to Nick Rost. Lund then got into the scoring action, as he caught a 12-yard touchdown pas from Senske on the Oles' next drive, and just before halftime, kicker Dan O'Malley booted a 32-yard field goal, to give the Oles an 18-13 halftime advantage.
St. Olaf scored on its third drive of the third quarter, taking advantage of positive field position on a poor Auggie punt. The Oles had to drive just 33 yards in six plays, capping it on Stinar's second touchdown of the day, a nine-yard rush up the middle to give the Oles their final lead of the game at 24-13 with 4:36 left in the period.
St. Olaf's Senske threw for 107 yards, completing 15-of-25 passes. Bobby Andrade led the Ole rushers with 87 yards on 23 carries, while Stinar had 64 yards on 15 carries. In all, St. Olaf rushed for 187 yards compared to Augsburg's 103. Lund caught four passes for 59 yards.
Ben Paul rushed eight times for 45 yards for Augsburg, while
Nick Sanchez had 31 yards on eight carries. Smith caught three passes for 27 yards, and
Shawn Johnson caught two passes for 40 yards.
Defensively, Augsburg was led by Brandon Fox, who had 13 tackles (six solo), including two for loss.
Jim Gunderson had 12 tackles (six solo),
Major Williams had 11 tackles (four solo) and
Ross Peroutka had 10 tackles (five solo).
Joe Cullen claimed two sacks and four tackles for loss among his nine tackles (three solo) on the day.
Matt Bucka led the Oles with 11 tackles (eight solo), including two for loss. Andre Conner had eight tackles (one solo) and a half-sack, while John Davis had seven tackles (four solo) and a sack.
AUGGIES DROP TO 2-7 WITH THIRD LOSS IN A ROW, 24-10 AT BETHEL: Bethel College used a balanced scoring attack and timely defensive and special team plays to beat visiting Augsburg 24-10 last Saturday afternoon at Bethel Stadium in Arden Hills, Minn.
Leading the way for the Royals was sophomore running back Phil Porta, who rushed for 174 yards on the ground with a touchdown. Porta broke the single-season rushing record at Bethel in the first half, eclipsing Mike Johnson's 2001 record of 1,462. Porta has rushed for 1,589 yards with one game remaining in the season.
The difference in the game, however, were the four interceptions and special teams play by Bethel. Twice Bethel faked punt attempts, once for a 30-yard reception to Kirby Carr down to the one-yard line and then a 50-yard touchdown reception to Brandon Carr late in the third quarter to give the Royals the lead 14-10.
Bethel opened the scoring with a nine-yard run by receiver Zach Ludvigson (Minnetonka, Minn.). Augsburg answered with a 47-yard field goal by
Nick Schlieman (Jr., Burnsville, Minn.) and a 39-yard scoring strike from quarterback
Marcus LeVesseur (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn./Bloomington Kennedy HS) to
Ricky Schreier (So., Maplewood, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) to put the Auggies ahead at half 10-7. Bethel added a 22-yard field goal by Ludvigson and a touchdown by Porta in the fourth quarter to seal the win.
Augsburg was limited to just 258 yards of total offense, its third game in a row held under 300 yards. Meanwhile, Bethel put together 433 yards of total offense in the game. LeVesseur was held to just 39 net yards of rushing on 23 carries, while throwing for 196 yards. He was sacked four times. Schreier caught six passes for 76 yards, while Yaruze Slowon (Sr., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) caught four passes for 64 yards.
Defensively,
Taylor Kroger (Jr., Cottonwood, Minn./Lakeview HS) led the Auggies with 11 tackles (three solo), while
Andy Matzke (Jr., Faribault, Minn.),
Andrew Neumann (So., Somerset, Wis.) and
Ross Peroutka (Jr., Faribault, Minn.) had nine tackles each.
HEAD COACH JACK OSBERG TO RETIRE AFTER FRIDAY'S GAME: Friday's game will mark the final game for head coach
Jack Osberg, who announced his retirement from coaching at the end of this season.
Osberg, 64, the 13th coach in the 73-season history of Augsburg football, has won a school-record 62 games as head coach (62-78) in his 14 seasons. After completing the 2004 football season, Osberg will remain on the Augsburg staff, assisting in the school's Alumni and Parent Relations and Development areas, to develop connections with athletic alumni and parents.
Assistant Dean for Athletics and Recreation
Jeff Swenson said that a national search for a new head coach will begin following the season, with the goal of having a new head coach hired by the winter months.
Osberg served as Augsburg's defensive coordinator from 1977-84, and was named the Auggies' head coach in 1991.
Under Osberg's leadership, the football program grew in both numbers and victories, and in 1997, Osberg accomplished what no Augsburg football coach had ever done before -- winning the MIAC championship and qualifying for the NCAA Division III national playoffs, while engineering the best record (10-2) in school history. Osberg earned MIAC Coach of the Year honors in 1997.
Osberg surpassed his mentor, Edor Nelson (56-118-10 from 1947-69), as Augsburg's all-time victory leader last season. Osberg also has the most MIAC victories (50-71) of any Augsburg head coach. Osberg had the third-longest tenure of any current MIAC coach, behind Bethel's Steve Johnson (16 seasons) and St. John's John Gagliardi (52 seasons at St. John's, 56 overall).
A 1962 Augsburg graduate and Minneapolis native, Osberg has been involved with the Auggie football program for parts of four decades. A two-time All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference selection as a nose guard/offensive guard, Osberg was a standout football player at Augsburg from 1958-61, also earning team MVP, captain and Lutheran All-American honors. He was inducted into the Augsburg Athletic Hall of Fame in 1979.
Outside of Augsburg, Osberg served as an assistant coach at Minneapolis Roosevelt High School from 1962-70, as a graduate assistant coach on Bob Devaney's staff at Nebraska in 1968-69, and as head coach at Wayzata High School from 1971-76. He taught biology in the Wayzata school district for 20 years and was recognized for his teaching excellence there.
Osberg lives in Plymouth, Minn., with his wife Nina, who recently retired from teaching at Wayzata High School. They have six children: Rich, Jennifer, Peter, Jeff, James and Anne, and five grandchildren: Grace, Johanna, Lydia, Zoe and Mason.
LEVESSEUR BECOMING A MULTIPLE THREAT: In his first season of college football, Augsburg quarterback
Marcus LeVesseur (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn./Bloomington Kennedy HS) has become a multiple threat in Augsburg's revamped offense. LeVesseur leads the Auggies in both rushing (843 yards on 215 carries) and passing (1144 yards, 96-of-207, 12 TD, 14 INT) this season.
LeVesseur has the potential to become just the second player in school history to rush for more than 1,000 yards in a single season; the school record, 1,011, was set by Marty Alger in 1992. He also has the potential to break Augsburg's single-season record for rushing attempts; the school record, 232, was set by Brian Warden in 1999.
Among MIAC players (all games), LeVesseur is one of only three players to average more than 90 rushing yards per game. Bethel's Phil Porta averages 176.6; St. Thomas' Peter Ridley averages 104.1, and LeVesseur averages 93.7. LeVesseur is third in the MIAC (all games) in total offense (220.8 yards per game).
In MIAC games only, LeVesseur is second in the conference in rushing (115.1 yards per game in seven games), leads the league in total offense (256.6 ypg) and is third in all-purpose yards (141.0 ypg).
LeVesseur is in his first season of college football after earning two NCAA Division III national championships at 157 pounds as an Auggie wrestler. He is 84-0 after two seasons at Augsburg, and has yet to lose a collegiate match. The Auggies' wrestling season begins with the Auggie-Brute-Adidas Open on Nov. 20 at 9 a.m. at Si Melby Hall.
MOVING UP THE SACK LADDER: Augsburg defensive end
Joe Cullen (Sr., Coon Rapids, Minn.) currently has a team-high 5.5 sacks this season and 18.5 on his career. His career total puts him in fifth place in school history in career sacks; the school record is 28.5, set by Bob Anderson from 1992-95. Fourth on the record list is Matt Chappuis, who had 22.5 sacks from 1998-2001.
HASTINGS SNARES SIXTH INTERCEPTION:
Jordan Hastings (Jr., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) had an interception against Bethel on Saturday, giving him a team-high six this season. Augsburg's single-season school record for interceptions is eight, set by Bill Kriesel in 1993.
SCHLIEMAN CAN SET MIAC PUNTING STANDARD AGAIN THIS SEASON: Augsburg punter/kicker
Nick Schlieman (Jr., Burnsville, Minn.) has the potential to be the MIAC's top punter for the third year in a row. Through seven conference games, Schlieman is averaging 39.1 yards per punt, while St. Olaf's Nate Johnson is averaging 39.3 yards per punt.
Overall this season, Schlieman is averaging 38.2 yards per punt, down from his 42.0 average from 2003. He has placed 11 punts inside the 20 and has a long of 60 yards this season.
As Augsburg's primary placekicker, Schlieman has connected on two field goals this season, including a career-high 47-yarder on Saturday against Bethel. Schlieman's marker was just two yards shy of Augsburg's longest field goal ever, a 49-yarder by Brian Berg in a 1972 game against Macalester.
HOUSER CLOSING IN ON 1,000 CAREER RUSHING YARDS: Running back
Steve Houser (Jr., Zimmerman, Minn./Elk River HS) is edging closer to the 1,000-yard career rushing milestone this season. A two-year starter, Houser now has 948 career rushing yards on 245 carries (3.9 yards per carry). Augsburg's school record for career rushing yards is 2,226, set by Marty Alger from 1991-95. Three running backs in school history have eclipsed the 2,000-yard barrier -- Alger, Wayne Graves (2,059 yards, 1970-73) and Dan Roff (2,042, 1978-81).
SCOUTING THE OLES: St. Olaf College has been one of the surprise teams in the MIAC this season, entering this week's play with a 6-3 overall record, 4-3 in MIAC play. Included in that record was a strong four-game winning streak, capped by a 21-19 win over defending NCAA Division III national champion St. John's on Oct. 30. St. Olaf can claim seven wins for the first time since the 2000 season with a triumph on Friday. The last three times St. Olaf won seven games in a season was in 2000, 1991, and 1979. The last time the Oles won eight games in a season was
1978 (9-1).
Last week, the Oles saw the four-game winning streak come to a crashing halt with a 50-7 loss to Concordia-Moorhead, which clinched the MIAC regular-season championship at the Oles' Manitou Field. Concordia capitalized on five St. Olaf second-half turnovers and scored 28 points in the third quarter.
The Oles had 7-2 lead in the second quarter, before the Cobbers scored twice in the last four minutes of the half. The Oles' touchdown came on an end-around reverse pass from Andrew Schmiesing to Jay Higgins, good for 63 yards with 7:53 left in the first half.
The Cobbers scored their first touchdown on an Andy Passanante 40-yard reception from Brian Schumacher. The duo teamed up on an 80-yard strike in the third quarter, and Schumacher ran for another score in the win for Concordia.
Preston St. John had five receptions, while Horace Gant four receptions, and Craig Botnen had 11 tackles to lead St. Olaf. Deonte Hutchins added an interception.
