Football 11/6/04 -- Bethel 24, Augsburg 10
BOXSCORE
ARDEN HILLS, Minn. (11/6/04) -- Bethel College used a balanced scoring attack and timely defensive and special team plays to beat visiting Augsburg 24-10 in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference football game Saturday afternoon at Bethel Stadium.
Leading the way for the Royals was sophomore running back Phil Porta (So., Cambridge, Minn.) who rushed for 174 yards on the ground with a touchdown. Porta broke the single season rushing record at Bethel in the first half eclipsing Mike Johnson's 2001 record of 1,462. Porta has rushed for 1,589 yards with one game remaining in the season.
The difference in the game, however, were the four interceptions and special teams play by Bethel. Twice Bethel faked punt attemps, once for a 30 yard recption to Kirby Carr (Fergus Falls, Minn.) down to the one yardline and then a 50 yard touchdown reception to Brandon Carr (Fergus Falls, Minn.) late in the third quarter to give the Royals the lead 14-10.
Bethel opened the scoring with a nine-yard run by receiver Zach Ludvigson (Minnetonka, Minn.). Augsburg answered with a 47-yard field goal and a 39-yard scoring strike from quarterback
Marcus LeVesseur (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn./Bloomington Kennedy HS) to Ricky Schreider (So., Maplewood, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) to put the Auggies ahead at half 10-7.
Bethel added a 22-yard field goal by Ludvigson and a touchdown by Porta in the fourth quarter to seal the win for Bethel.
Augsburg will close its season at the Metrodome next Friday night (11/12) against St. Olaf. Game time is 7 p.m. Bethel will close its season next Saturday (11/13) at 1 p.m., hosting Gustavus at Royal Stadium in Arden Hills.

LAST YEAR: Bethel head coach Steve Johnson collected his 100th career win, as Bethel claimed a 44-10 win over Augsburg on Nov. 1, 2003, at Royal Stadium.
Bethel opened the scoring with an 11-yard scoring pass from senior quarterback Scott Kirchoff to sophomore Brett Einerson. It was Einerson's first career touchdown.
Augsburg got on the board at the top of the second quarter on a 35-yard field goal by
Nick Schlieman, which culminated a 12-play, 38-yard drive.
The Royals scored the next two touchdowns on scoring runs by freshman Ross Muellenberg (35 yards) and Kirchoff (two yards) to take a 23-3 lead.
Augsburg added a 30-yard scoring pass from
Tony George to Yarzue Slowon with 27 seconds left in the second quarter to close the gap to 23-10 going into halftime.
The second half proved to be all Bethel, as Kirchoff threw two scoring passes, 32 yards to junior Jason Weimer and two yards to junior Zach Ludvigson. Senior receiver John Kilde finished the scoring, as he caught a 25-yard scoring pass from A.J. Parnell with 4:55 left to give Bethel its 44-10 win.
Freshmen running backs Phil Porta and Muellenberg carried Bethel's rushing attack. Porta carried 15 times for 133 yards and Muellenberg netted 70 yards on five carries. Kirchoff, the MIAC's all-time leading passer, finished 14 for 20 for 168 yards and three touchdowns. He also rushed for 23 yards.
Augsburg running back
Steve Houser carried 26 times for 95 yards. Quarterback George completed 11 of 24 passes for 111 yards and one score. Slowon caught three passes for 61 yards.
The Bethel defense held Augsburg to a total of 197 yards. Senior strong safety Sam Lacy became Bethel's all-time leading tackler as he finished with 12 total tackles, including 7.0 for loss with 2.0 sacks. He also forced one fumble, picked off one pass, and broke up two other passes.
Brandon Fox (Sr., Springfield, Minn.) had 11 tackles (nine solo) to lead Augsburg, while
Craig Pike and
Taylor Kroger had six tackles apiece.
AUGGIES FALL 31-6 AT MIAC-LEADER CONCORDIA-MOORHEAD: Concordia-Moorhead clinched a share of the MIAC football championship and the league's automatic berth into the NCAA Division III national playoffs with a 31-6 victory over visiting Augsburg last Saturday at Jake Christiansen Stadium.
Playing in a steady downpour and on a field that had been saturated by over an inch of rain from the night before, Concordia scored the first 31 points in the game and convincingly put away its first MIAC title since 1995. The win also gives the Cobbers the automatic bid into the NCAA playoffs since the only team that could tie Concordia for the title is St. Thomas, who the Cobbers beat 20-3 earlier in the year.
Brian Schumacher continued to be the catalyst for the Cobber offense. The sophomore signal-caller ran for two touchdowns and threw for more than 150 yards in leading Concordia to the title-clinching win. Schumacher finished the game with 67 rushing yards on 16 carries. He was an economic 9-for-14 through the air and totaled 164 passing yards.
The Cobber offense racked up 415 yards in total offense. Concordia ran for 251 yards and had 164 yards through the air. Concordia limited Augsburg to just 142 yards of total offense on the day. Augsburg's 46 passing yards marked the first time Augsburg has been held under 100 passing yards since being held to 52 in a 34-14 loss at St. Thomas on Oct. 6, 2001.
Ed Oehlers and Travis Christensen scored the other touchdowns for Concordia, marking the second straight game the senior running backs have punched through into the end zone. It was Oehlers team-leading seventh TD. He finished the game with 55 hard-nosed rushing yards on 14 carries. For Christensen it was his third TD of the year.
Senior wide receiver Andrew Passanante returned to his old form against the Auggies. After being held for under 100 yards against St. John's and Bethel, Passanante tore through the Auggie defense for 164 yards on six catches. Shawn Reile collected a pair of receptions and had 26 receiving yards.
Jacob Odermann came in for Schumacher in the third quarter and was able to run through the tired Augsburg defense. Odermann gained 69 yards on only eight carries. He also broke off the game's longest run when he scampered 49 yards late in the third quarter.
The Cobber defense put a stranglehold on the potent Augsburg running game through most of the game. Concordia limited the Auggies to only 142 yards in total offense. The Cobbers conceded only 46 yards through the air and punished the Augsburg ground game, allowing only 96 yards. It is only the second time all season that the Auggies have been held under 120 yards in rushing.
Augsburg was led by junior quarterback
Marcus LeVesseur (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn./Bloomington Kennedy HS). The two-time wrestling national champion was the workhorse for the Auggie offense on the day. He had 33 carries and amassed 83 yards. He was also 9-for-21 for 46 yards in the passing department. He scored the only touchdown of the day for Augsburg when he went over from one-yard out late in the fourth quarter.
Augsburg's
Andrew Neumann (So., Somerset, Wis.) had game highs in solo tackles (7) and overall tackles (11).
Andy Matzke (Jr., Faribault, Minn.) and
Jordan Hastings (Jr., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) had interceptions for the Auggies.
HEAD COACH JACK OSBERG TO RETIRE AT END OF SEASON: Next Friday's game will mark the final game for head coach
Jack Osberg, who announced his retirement from coaching at the end of this season.
Osberg, 64, the 13th coach in the 73-season history of Augsburg football, has won a school-record 62 games as head coach (62-77) in his 14 seasons. After completing the 2004 football season, Osberg will remain on the Augsburg staff, assisting in the school's Alumni and Parent Relations and Development areas, to develop connections with athletic alumni and parents.
Assistant Dean for Athletics and Recreation
Jeff Swenson said that a national search for a new head coach will begin following the season, with the goal of having a new head coach hired by the winter months.
Osberg served as Augsburg's defensive coordinator from 1977-84, and was named the Auggies' head coach in 1991.
Under Osberg's leadership, the football program grew in both numbers and victories, and in 1997, Osberg accomplished what no Augsburg football coach had ever done before -- winning the MIAC championship and qualifying for the NCAA Division III national playoffs, while engineering the best record (10-2) in school history. Osberg earned MIAC Coach of the Year honors in 1997.
Osberg surpassed his mentor, Edor Nelson (56-118-10 from 1947-69), as Augsburg's all-time victory leader last season. Osberg also has the most MIAC victories (50-70) of any Augsburg head coach. Osberg had the third-longest tenure of any current MIAC coach, behind Bethel's Steve Johnson (16 seasons) and St. John's John Gagliardi (52 seasons at St. John's, 56 overall).
A 1962 Augsburg graduate and Minneapolis native, Osberg has been involved with the Auggie football program for parts of four decades. A two-time All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference selection as a nose guard/offensive guard, Osberg was a standout football player at Augsburg from 1958-61, also earning team MVP, captain and Lutheran All-American honors. He was inducted into the Augsburg Athletic Hall of Fame in 1979.
Outside of Augsburg, Osberg served as an assistant coach at Minneapolis Roosevelt High School from 1962-70, as a graduate assistant coach on Bob Devaney's staff at Nebraska in 1968-69, and as head coach at Wayzata High School from 1971-76. He taught biology in the Wayzata school district for 20 years and was recognized for his teaching excellence there.
Osberg lives in Plymouth, Minn., with his wife Nina, who recently retired from teaching at Wayzata High School. They have six children: Rich, Jennifer, Peter, Jeff, James and Anne, and five grandchildren: Grace, Johanna, Lydia, Zoe and Mason.
LEVESSEUR BECOMING A MULTIPLE THREAT: In his first season of college football, Augsburg quarterback
Marcus LeVesseur (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn./Bloomington Kennedy HS) has become a multiple threat in Augsburg's revamped offense. LeVesseur leads the Auggies in both rushing (804 yards on 192 carries) and passing (948 yards, 79-of-168, 11 TD, 10 INT) this season.
LeVesseur has the potential to become just the second player in school history to rush for more than 1,000 yards in a single season; the school record, 1,011, was set by Marty Alger in 1992. He also has the potential to break Augsburg's single-season record for rushing attempts; the school record, 232, was set by Brian Warden in 1999.
Among MIAC players (all games), LeVesseur is one of only three players to average more than 100 rushing yards per game. Bethel's Phil Porta averages 176.9; St. Thomas' Peter Ridley averages 101.9, and LeVesseur averages 100.5. LeVesseur is third in the MIAC (all games) in total offense (219.0 yards per game).
In MIAC games only, LeVesseur is second in the conference in rushing (127.8 yards per game in five games), leads the league in total offense (260.2 ypg) and is third in all-purpose yards (155.8 ypg).
In addition, LeVesseur also has 278 kickoff return yards on 13 attempts (21.4 yards per return) this season.
After setting a school record with four rushing touchdowns and throwing for two more in Augsburg's 42-10 win over Carleton on Oct. 2, LeVesseur was named MIAC Co-Offensive Player of the Week and Don Hansen's National Weekly Football Gazette Division III Co-National Offensive Player of the Week. Against Gustavus on Oct. 9, LeVesseur rushed for 207 yards on 32 carries, just 10 yards shy of the school's single-game rushing record 217 yards by Marty Alger in a 1993 game.
LeVesseur is in his first season of college football after earning two NCAA Division III national championships at 157 pounds as an Auggie wrestler. He is 84-0 after two seasons at Augsburg, and has yet to lose a collegiate match. The Auggies' wrestling season begins with the Auggie-Brute-Adidas Open on Nov. 20 at 9 a.m. at Si Melby Hall.
MOVING UP THE SACK LADDER: Augsburg defensive end
Joe Cullen (Sr., Coon Rapids, Minn.) currently has a team-high 5.5 sacks this season and 18.5 on his career. His career total puts him in fifth place in school history in career sacks; the school record is 28.5, set by Bob Anderson from 1992-95. Fourth on the record list is Matt Chappuis, who had 22.5 sacks from 1998-2001.
HASTINGS SNARES FIFTH INTERCEPTION:
Jordan Hastings (Jr., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) had an interception against Concordia, giving him a team-high five this season. Augsburg's single-season school record for interceptions is eight, set by Bill Kriesel in 1993.
HOUSER CLOSING IN ON 1,000 CAREER RUSHING YARDS: Running back
Steve Houser (Jr., Zimmerman, Minn./Elk River HS) is edging closer to the 1,000-yard career rushing milestone this season. A two-year starter, Houser now has 942 career rushing yards on 244 carries (3.9 yards per carry). Augsburg's school record for career rushing yards is 2,226, set by Marty Alger from 1991-95. Three running backs in school history have eclipsed the 2,000-yard barrier -- Alger, Wayne Graves (2,059 yards, 1970-73) and Dan Roff (2,042, 1978-81).
SCOUTING THE ROYALS: Bethel University enters today's game with a 4-4 overall record, 3-3 in MIAC play. After a 3-1 start to the season, the Royals dropped three games in a row to the league's leaders -- 37-0 at St. John's on Oct. 9, 28-21 to St. Thomas on Oct. 16 and 34-23 at Concordia-Moorhead on Oct. 23 before last week's 21-6 win at Carleton.
Bethel's Phil Porta has been one of the big individual stories in the MIAC this season. Leading the conference in rushing with 1,415 yards on 235 carries (176.9 yards per game), Porta is just 48 yards shy of breaking Mike Johnson's single-season Bethel record of 1,462 yards, set during the 2001 season.
Porta carried 37 times for a school record 264 yards and three scores, all in the second quarter, in Bethel's win at Carleton. Porta tallied scoring runs of 19, 9 and 21 yards, all in the second quarter, keying a Bethel ground attack that racked 390 yards on the day. Bethel out-gained Carleton 459-317 in total offense.
Carleton drew first blood, embarking on a 12-play, 71-yard drive. It stalled out at the 4-yard line, and Pat Barry booted his first field goal to stake the hosts to a 3-0 lead.
Bethel tallied 147 rushing yards in the second quarter, as Porta carried 18 times for 115 yards in the stanza as Bethel scored all of its points in a nine-minute span and held the ball for nearly 11 minutes in the period. Carleton's Barry kicked a season-long 36-yard field goal on the final play of the half, as the Knights marched 58 yards in 1:29 after Bethel's third touchdown.
Neither team mounted a serious scoring threat in the second half, although the Knights pushed to the Bethel 17-yard line in the final two minutes, but were unable to punch it in for the score.
Kirby Carr paced the Royals' defense with eight tackles, seven solo, and added a sack and three tackles for losses. The Royals held the Knights to a mere 106 yards rushing and 3-for-17 on third-down conversions. The Royals tallied four sacks.
NEXT WEEK AT THE METRODOME: Because the air-supported "bubble" is already in place over Edor Nelson Field, Augsburg will close its season at the Metrodome next Friday night (11/12) against St. Olaf. Game time is 7 p.m.
Free parking is available on the Metrodome upper lot, adjacent to the Vikings' ticket office. Lot entrance is off of 11th Avenue South, near the intersection with 5th Street South. Metrodome entry and tickets will be at Gate D, adjacent to the upper parking lot (above the loading dock).
Tickets will be handled just like a regular Augsburg home game. Tickets are $6 for adults, $3 for students. Augsburg and MIAC passes will be accepted. All Augsburg students, faculty and staff get into any Augsburg regular-season home game free with ID.
BETHEL NEXT WEEK: Bethel will close its season next Saturday (11/13) at 1 p.m., hosting Gustavus at Royal Stadium in Arden Hills.
