Men's Hockey 11/6/04 -- Wisconsin-Stout 6, Augsburg 3

MINNEAPOLIS (11/6/04) -- Joe Edin (So., New Richmond, Wis.) claimed a hat trick with a three-goal evening, and Mike Stone (Fr., West St. Paul, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) made 42 saves for his first collegiate victory in goal, as the University of Wisconsin-Stout remained unbeaten with a 6-3 win over host Augsburg College in a nonconference men's hockey game Saturday night at the Augsburg Ice Arena.
The Blue Devils improved to 3-0-1 on the season with the win, despite being outshot by a 45-23 margin by the host Auggies, now 0-1-1.
Edin opened the game with a goal at the 10:30 mark of the first period, then scored the final two Blue Devil markers in the third period.
Stone was tested often in the game, as the Auggies outshot Stout by a 21-9 margin in the second period and a 16-6 margin in the final period.
Andy Wiesner (So., Rochester, Minn./John Marshall HS) had a goal and assist for the Blue Devils, and Justin Huth (Jr., Shakopee, Minn.) and Kory Mortel (Sr., Cottage Grove, Minn.) had the other Stout goals. Robby Olszewski (So., Janesville, Wis./Craig HS) and Kyle Crable (Fr., Bemidji, Minn./Luverne HS) had two assists apiece.
After building a 2-0 lead on goals from Edin and Huth in the first period, the Auggies could not cut into the advantage, as each goal was met with another marker by the Blue Devils.
Aaron Johnson (So., Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS), a transfer from Division I Michigan Tech, scored his first goal as an Auggie on the power play at the 1:02 mark of the second period, but Mortel answered for the Blue Devils with an unassisted goal off a steal at the 2:16 mark.
Danny Carlson (Fr., Roseville, Minn.) notched his first collegiate goal for the Auggies early in the second period. However, Stout answered again with two goals in rapid succession midway through the frame to seal the victory. Wiesner scored at the 12:06 mark and Edin notched his second goal 1:07 later. Augsburg's
Joe Haehn (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS) answered with a goal at the 13:59 mark, but Edin ended the Auggie threat with a power-play goal at the 17:26 mark.
Augsburg managed just one goal in nine power-play opportunities, while Stout was 2-for-6 with the man advantage.
Tony Ciro (Jr., Spring Lake Park, Minn./Hill-Murray HS) made 17 saves for Augsburg.
Both teams continue MIAC-NCHA crossover action next weekend. On Friday (11/12), Augsburg hosts Wisconsin-Superior at 8 p.m., and hosts St. Scholastica on Saturday (11/13) at 7 p.m. Stout hosts St. Mary's on Friday at 7 p.m., and plays at St. Thomas on Saturday at 7 p.m.
