FORT MYERS, Fla. (3/20/04) -- Taylor Pagel (Jr., Cannon Falls, Minn.) hit a first-inning grand slam and went 2-for-4 at the plate to lead Augsburg College to a 6-5 win over Aurora University (Ill.) in the first game of a baseball doubleheader. However, Aurora got the best of the Auggies in the nightcap, with an 18-0 victory to end Augsburg's trip at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic tournament on Saturday. Augsburg is now 6-8 on the season.

Pagel's grand slam homer gave the Auggies the early lead, but Augsburg allowed five runs in the next four innings to trail 5-4. Augsburg scored twice in the sixth inning to take the lead for good. Troy Deden (So., Northfield, Minn.) scored on a passed ball, and Pagel doubled and scored on an RBI single by Jon Kozitza (Jr., North Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS).

Tyler Kraft (Fr., Savage, Minn.) picked up the pitching win in relief for the Auggies, allowing just one run in 4.1 innings of work. John Golnitz (Jr., Green Bay, Wis./Preble HS) started for the Auggies.

Pat Knafla (Sr., Rice, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice HS) went 2-for-3 for the Auggies, as did Joe Haehn (So., Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS).

Aurora put a pounding on the Auggies in the second game, with 15 hits and 18 runs off of seven Auggie pitchers. Aurora also took advantage of six Augsburg errors in the contest. Andy Nelson (So., Waseca, Minn.) went 2-for-4 for the Auggies, who managed just four hits in the game.

Augsburg returns to Minnesota for a nonconference doubleheader at Northwestern College-Roseville next Saturday (3/27) at 12 noon.
