Joe Haehn (So., Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS) hit for the cycle, with a single, double, triple and home run in a nine-inning effort, as Augsburg College dominated in a 9-3 victory over the host University of Minnesota-Morris in a nonconference baseball game on Monday afternoon at Cougar Field.
Rich Muske (Fr., St. Joseph, Minn./St. Cloud Apollo HS) struck out two in seven innings of work to claim his first collegiate pitching victory, as Augsburg improved to 9-10 on the season, matching its win total from last season (9-24-2) in the first season for new Augsburg coach
Keith Bateman. Minnesota-Morris remains winless at 0-14 overall.
Haehn, hitting in the No. 8 spot in the Auggie lineup, had a single in the third inning, a solo home run in the fifth, a double in the seventh inning and a triple to clinch the cycle in the ninth inning. He led off the inning for Augsburg in each of the last three at-bats, scoring three runs.
Muske gained his first collegiate win with seven innings of work, allowing seven hits and two walks while striking out two.
John Golnitz (Jr., Green Bay, Wis./Preble HS) finished the game for the Auggies, allowing three hits in two innings of work.
The host Cougars built a 2-0 first-inning lead, but Augsburg scored five runs in a three-inning span midway through the game to break it open. Augsburg scored an unearned run in the third, while an RBI single by
Taylor Pagel (Jr., Cannon Falls, Minn.) drove in a run in the fourth inning. Haehn's homer led off the fifth, and a run-scoring triple by
Darren Ginther (So., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) and single by
Collin Nash (Sr., Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) also plated runs.
Augsburg added a run on a sacrifice fly by Pagel in the eighth, and an RBI single by
Andy Nelson (So., Waseca, Minn.) and two-run single by Ginther finished the scoring for the Auggies in the ninth.
In addition to Haehn's cycle, Augsburg's Ginther also had a solid game, going 4-for-5 with three runs scored and three RBI. Nelson went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and two driven in.
Augsburg returns to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Wednesday (4/7) at 2:30 p.m., hosting Bethel at Edor Nelson Field.
