Football 9/11/04 -- Wartburg (Iowa) 27, Augsburg 24
BOXSCORE
MINNEAPOLIS (9/11/04) -- Jordan Maus hit a 40-yard field goal as time expired on Saturday, giving Wartburg College a 27-24 victory over Augsburg College in a nonconference football game before 1,885 fans at Augsburg's Edor Nelson Field.
Maus' buzzer-beater capped a wild finish to the back-and-forth contest. With the game tied at 24-24, Augsburg had a chance to win the game, when
Andy Matzke picked off a pass at the Wartburg 45-yard line with 1:08 left. But Augsburg could only advance the ball to the Wartburg 36, with a key play a nine-yard sack of Auggie quarterback
Tony George by Alex Pollock.
With 19 seconds left in regulation, Augsburg's
Nick Schlieman attempted a career-high and school-record 53-yard field goal, but missed just short, giving the Knights one more possession from their own 37. Two long passes from Reed Hoskins to Mike Hachey -- 19 and 26 yards -- gave the Knights the ball at the Augsburg 18 with time running out.
Wartburg scrambled to attempt a game-winning 33-yard field goal, and Augsburg's
Ricky Schreier blocked the attempt, seemingly ending the fourth quarter and setting up overtime. However, in the scramble to get a field goal off, Wartburg was whistled for a dead-ball, illegal-procedure penalty, stopping the clock with three seconds left and giving the Knights another opportunity to secure the win.
After a time out to ice the kicker, Wartburg's Maus connected on a 40-yard field goal, his second successful try of the game, to win it.
Wartburg, ranked No. 5 in the Division III national polls, produced 520 yards of total offense -- 236 yards of rushing by Andy Parker with two touchdowns, and 232 yards of passing by Hoskins. Hachey caught four passes for 86 yards, with Chris Winter catching four balls for 53 yards and a touchdown, and Ben Thomsen catching five for 46.
Augsburg was paced by running back
Steve Houser, who rushed 23 times for 104 yards and two touchdowns.
Marcus LeVesseur rushed nine times for 34 yards.
Tony George had 15 completions for 127 yards, with Yarzue Slowon catching seven passes for 64 yards.
Andrew Neumann caught five passes for 49 yards and
Ben Bothun caught four passes for 34 yards.
Houser had TD runs of 15 and 46 yards, with
Jordan Hastings adding a 64-yard interception return for a score in the third quarter.
Kyle Danner hit a 23-yard field goal for the Auggies.
Parker had TD runs of 25 and two yards, with Winter catching an 11-yard TD pass.
Matzke led the Auggie defense with two interceptions and 13 tackles (eight solo).
Jim Gunderson had nine tackles, and Schreier had eight tackles.
Wartburg's defense was paced by Mike Bouska, who had 11 tackles, and Pollock, who had nine tackles, including two for loss and 1.5 sacks.

SERIES: This is the third time that Augsburg and Wartburg have faced each other in football, with the series tied at 1-1. The teams played in the 1952 and 1953 seasons, with Augsburg winning 19-13 in 1952 and Wartburg winning 14-12 in 1953.
LAST WEEK: Augsburg was idle in the first scheduled week of the 11-week, 10-game NCAA Division III season. Wartburg won its season-opener for the 11th year in a row with a 36-21 triumph over Millikin (Ill.) last Saturday at Wartburg's Walston-Hoover Stadium.
INAUGURAL FOOTBALL GAME FOR NEW SPRINTURF AT EDOR NELSON FIELD: Saturday's game will mark the first football contest on the new Sprinturf "next-generation" artificial-turf surface at Edor Nelson Field. Work on the $400,000 turf replacement project began June 16 and was completed in early August. The existing Astroturf surface (installed in 1993) was removed and the new Sprinturf synthetic-grass surface was installed over the current asphalt base with an infill of a rubber-sand mix.
Sprinturf, a Wayne, Pa., company, installed a new surface at fellow Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference school St. John's University in 2002, re-surfacing its football field, Clemens Stadium. More than 150 fields throughout North America feature a Sprinturf surface, including several in Minnesota -- St. Paul's Griffin Stadium (Concordia University-St. Paul, St. Paul Central High School, Minnesota Thunder soccer), two athletic fields at Minnetonka High School, and fields at Breck High School (Golden Valley) and Duluth Denfeld High School.
Other well-known Sprinturf installations include: Washington-Grizzly Stadium at the University of Montana, the NovaCare Training Facility for the NFL's Philadelphia Eagles, the Baptist Sports Park training facility for the NFL's Tennessee Titans, a practice field at Auburn (Ala.) University, and Youngstown State's (Ohio) Beede Field at Stambaugh Stadium.
Augsburg's Edor Nelson Field, opened in 1984, is one of the most-used outdoor athletic fields in the Twin Cities. The field is the home for four Augsburg intercollegiate athletic teams -- football, men's soccer, women's soccer and softball -- and is also used extensively by the college's intramural sports program, health and physical education classes and by a variety of local sports teams and leagues. The field is domed during the winter months to provide for a year-round practice and competition space for indoor soccer/lacrosse leagues and Augsburg activities.
The original Astroturf on the field was purchased from the Pontiac (Mich.) Silverdome at a cost of $75,000 -- a bargain compared to the $897,000 it was estimated to cost at the time to put in brand new turf. The Silverdome turf (which had been used for five years in Pontiac before being sold to Augsburg) was used for nine years on the Augsburg field, before being replaced with brand new Astroturf in 1993.
As the MIAC football team that has played the most on artificial-turf fields, Augsburg is 41-33 on turf since 1991 (when
Jack Osberg was named head coach) and 44-64-1 since 1984. The turf totals include an 8-10 all-time record in games played on turf indoors (7-10 at the Metrodome, 1-0 at the Fargodome). Augsburg's all-time football record at Edor Nelson Field is 37-54-1; 34-26 under Osberg.
AUGSBURG'S 11TH GAME AGAINST IOWA SCHOOLS: Saturday's game will be the 11th that Augsburg has played against schools from the state of Iowa in the 73-season history of Auggie football. The most recent game against an Iowa school came in the second round of the 1997 NCAA Division III national playoffs, when Simpson (Iowa) ended the Auggies' MIAC championship season with a 61-21 loss at Indianola, Iowa. This is the first Augsburg regular-season game against an Iowa school since 1983. Against other Iowa schools, Augsburg is 1-0 against Buena Vista, 0-2 against Central, 0-2 against Luther, 2-0 against Upper Iowa and 1-1 against Wartburg.
OSBERG IS 11-2 IN SEASON-OPENERS: Augsburg head coach
Jack Osberg has developed a strong record in season-opening games, in which he is 11-2 in his Auggie tenure, including a 7-1 mark in season-openers at Augsburg's home field, Edor Nelson Field.

OSBERG NOW AUGSBURG'S ALL-TIME FOOTBALL VICTORY LEADER: Augsburg head coach
Jack Osberg has been the architect of a rebirth of Augsburg College football since he was named head coach in 1991. Last season, Osberg passed his former coach, Edor Nelson, to become the winningest coach in school history. Osberg, a 1962 Augsburg graduate, enters his 14th season with the Auggies with a 60-71 career record. Nelson went 56-118-10 from 1947-69. Osberg also has the most MIAC wins (48-66-0) of any Augsburg coach, and his career overall winning percentage of .458 is second-best in school history. Augsburg has had seven .500-or-above seasons under Osberg, the second-most for a coach in school history. Nelson had eight in his 23 years. Bill Caris (1972-75) was 19-19, for the school's best winning percentage of .500. Osberg has the third-longest tenure among current MIAC football coaches, behind St. John's John Gagliardi (56th season, 52nd at St. John's in 2004) and Bethel's Steve Johnson (16th season).
THIRD STRAIGHT SEASON WITH TWO REGULAR-SEASON NONCONFERENCE GAMES: With Macalester having dropped its MIAC affiliation for football for a five-year span, Augsburg has to play two nonconference games in its 10-game regular-season schedule. After Carleton joined the MIAC in 1983 to give the conference 10 football schools, Augsburg played nine conference games from 1983 to 2001, with the exception of 1991, when a game against Gustavus was cancelled due to the infamous Halloween blizzard.
Last season, Augsburg went 1-1 in nonconference games, topping Jamestown (N.D.) 20-19 before falling to Wisconsin-Eau Claire 52-20. In 2002, Augsburg also went 1-1 in nonconference games, topping Dakota State (S.D.) 44-14 and losing to Wisconsin-Eau Claire (37-13).
Prior to 2002, Augsburg's last regular-season schedule with two nonconference games was 1983, when Augsburg defeated Buena Vista (Iowa) 29-24 on Sept. 3 and lost to Bemidji State 23-7 at the Metrodome on Nov. 20. That season, Augsburg went 4-7, the only year that Augsburg has had an 11-game regular season. Augsburg played three nonconference games in its MIAC championship season of 1997 (10-2), with its regular season win at Valley City State (N.D., 24-20 on Sept. 6) and two games in the NCAA Division III national playoffs (34-22 win over Concordia-Moorhead at the Fargodome on Nov. 15 and 61-21 loss at Simpson (Iowa) on Nov. 22.).
CENTER ADAM HOFFMANN NAMED TO PRESEASON ALL-AMERICAN TEAM: Augsburg center Adam Hoffmann (Sr., Hastings, Minn.) was named to the 2004 D3football.com Preseason All-American second team. Hoffmann is Augsburg's first preseason All-American since record-breaking wide receiver Scott Hvistendahl earned preseason honors from every major football preview publication before his senior year in 1998.
Hoffmann, a two-year starter at center and a team co-captain in 2003 and this season, led an offensive line that enabled the Auggies to average 3,172 yards of total offense in 2003 (4.4 yards per carry), including 1,968 passing yards, while allowing just 19 sacks. In his two seasons as a starter, Augsburg has averaged 321.7 yards of total offense per game, including 208.6 passing yards per game, while allowing just 37 sacks (0.9 per game). Hoffmann received the team's Outstanding Lineman award in 2002, his first-year as a full-time starter, in addition to sharing the honors with
Nate Anderson in 2003.
An accounting major with a 3.750 grade-point average, Hoffmann was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District first team for football in 2003. He earned the team's Outstanding Academic Achievement listing in 2002 and 2003, in addition to receiving Academic All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference honors both seasons.
SCHLIEMAN AMONG NATION'S TOP PUNTERS IN 2003: Augsburg kicker/punter
Nick Schlieman (Jr., Burnsville, Minn.) had an incredible season in 2003, ranking among the nation's leaders in punting in NCAA Division III football. He was was named to the 2003 D3Football.com NCAA Division III All-American team as an honorable-mention selection at punter, Augsburg's first postseason All-American selection since 1999. He was also named to the Division III All-West Region squad (third team) by Don Hansen's Football Gazette magazine and was named to the All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference first team as a punter for the second year in a row.
Schlieman was the conference's top punter for the second straight year, averaging 42.0 yards per punt overall, 40.2 yards per punt in eight MIAC games -- the only conference punter to average 40 yards per punt in league play. His 42.0 overall average ranked third-best in the country in the NCAA Division III national rankings -- one of only 10 punters nationally to average 40 yards or more per punt in 2003.
Of Schlieman's 57 punts in 2003, 33 were 40 yards or longer, 14 were 50 yards or longer and five were 60 yards or longer, including a school-record 74-yarder in the season-opener against Jamestown (N.D.) and punts of 68, 61, 65 and 66 yards. Schlieman placed 18 punts inside the opponent 20-yard line, against nine touchbacks and only two fair catches.
HIGH-PROFILE AUGGIE WRESTLERS PULLING DOUBLE-DUTY: Augsburg and Wartburg have developed a strong rivalry in NCAA Division III wrestling, as the two most dominant teams in the sport. Augsburg has won a record eight Division III national titles (1991, 1993, 1995, 1997, 1998, 2000, 2001, 2002), while Wartburg has won four national titles, including the last two in a row. In each of Wartburg's title years (1996, 1999, 2003, 2004), Augsburg finished second in the national race, while Wartburg has finished second to Augsburg five times.
This season, several Augsburg wrestlers are pulling double-duty as members of the football team. The highest-profile wrestler playing football this season is quarterback
Marcus LeVesseur (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn./Bloomington Kennedy HS), who has won two straight national titles at 157 pounds. He is 84-0 in his two seasons at Augsburg.
Another wrestling All-American,
Joe Cullen (Sr., Coon Rapids, Minn.), is a two-time All-MIAC football honorable mention selection on the defensive line. He finished seventh nationally at 197 pounds in the 2004 wrestling national championships.
Andrew Neumann (So., Somerset, Wis.), also a 197-pound wrestler, is Augsburg's starting tight end. Last season, Neumann caught 44 passes for 498 yards and a touchdown, the most catches and yards for an Auggie tight end since 1997.
Greg Brendemuehl (Jr., Medford, Minn.), a 2003 wrestling All-American (125 pounds, 6th place), is in his first season as a defensive back for the Auggies, joining fellow wrestler
Kirk Rall (Jr., West St. Paul, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) in the backfield, with Rich Miller (Jr., Anoka, Minn.) at linebacker. Transferring to Augsburg this year is
Zak Jensen (Jr., Hopkins, Minn.) from Northern Illinois, who will play football (defensive line) and wrestle. He was a two-time state wrestling qualifier (2000, 2001) at Hopkins HS.
One other football/wrestling connection:
Johnny Grygelko (Fr., Loretto, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville HS), grandson of former Augsburg coach John Grygelko (1972-80), is a linebacker this season. He was a two-time state competitor in high school wrestling.
A story on Augsburg's football/wrestling connection is online on the Wrestling Mall website: http://www.wrestlingmall.com/htmls/news.asp?Cat=3&View=9470
SCOUTING THE AUGGIES: Last season, the Augsburg College football team may have "overachieved" when, despite having the smallest roster in head coach
Jack Osberg's tenure -- just 54 players -- the Auggies claimed a 5-5 record and 4-4 mark in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
This year, there's no room for overachieving. There's only room for improvement.
Returning 14 starters and 41 letterwinners, while sporting one of the largest recruiting and transfer classes in Osberg's years, the Auggies have high hopes for continuing to rebuild to MIAC prominence. And while the Auggies sport just 13 seniors on the roster, there is still room for optimism this season.
"Some people may think that we might be a year away from being really good, but our seniors have the desire and we could surprise some people again," said Osberg, entering his 14th season as Augsburg's mentor with the school's most football victories (60-71 career record). "It depends on how quickly we can mature. We have an outstanding class of juniors with depth and experience, and we have a core of great seniors coming back.
"The key may be if we can carry over the hungriness that we had last year. We had our backs against the wall last year and we came out fighting. These kids want to continue with that same attitude. Our opponents will have to work very hard to beat us. Our goal is to be competitive against everybody, take things one game at a time and see how good we can be."
Osberg's squad will be tested with one of the most challenging schedules in recent years. Augsburg opens the season on Sept. 11 by hosting perennial NCAA Division III playoff contender Wartburg (Iowa), a team ranked No. 6 in the D3football.com preseason Division III national poll (now No. 5), then traveling to the Chicago suburbs for a game against an improved North Central (Ill.) squad, which finished 7-3 last year. Combine that with an MIAC schedule that features two returning national playoff teams, Bethel and defending national champion St. John's.
"We have a very tough schedule," Osberg said. "We will have a stiff challenge in our first two games. We'll need to go in with the right attitude, play our game and see what happens. We'll need to be ready for the challenge every week."
Osberg brought in a new offensive coordinator this season, Joe Austin, who guided the Concordia-St. Paul offense to top-10 national yardage rankings the past two seasons in NCAA Division II football. Austin's offense will be a departure from previous seasons, relying more on multiple formations and different looks, requiring players who can take on different roles in the offense.
And much like the offense, Augsburg's defense will rely on versatility and multiple looks, as defensive coordinator Tom Ross' scheme will rely on personnel that have a variety of skills.
Complete season preview for Augsburg is online: http://www.augsburg.edu/athletics/football/0405preview.html
SCOUTING THE KNIGHTS: Wartburg, winners of the last two Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference titles, won its 11th straight season-opening game with a 36-21 triumph over Milikin (Ill.) last Saturday at Wartburg's Walston-Hoover Stadium in Waverly, Iowa.
It wasn't all smooth sailing for the Knights as Millikin mounted a strong second half comeback effort, scoring 21 consecutive points. But the Knights, now ranked No. 5 in both the D3football.com Division III national poll and the Don Hansen's Football Gazette Division III national poll, hung on for the win.
In the game's opening drive, the Knights took the ball 62 yards down field in three plays. The drive was capped off with a 22-yard touchdown reception from junior quarterback Reed Hoskins to senior receiver Chris Winter. Hoskins had 20-plus-yard completions to six different receivers in the game.
The Knights capped off the first quarter with a one-yard touchdown run from fullback Dan Hammes set up by a 18-yard pass from Hoskins to Winter. Place-holder Mark Giesmann ran the ball in after a bobbled snap for a two point conversion, giving the Knights a 15-0 lead.
Wartburg's offense tallied three more touchdowns in the second quarter. Hammes led the touchdown parade with a 13-yard run for his second score. Hoskins connected with freshman receiver Kyle Duchman for a 20-yard score. Senior running back Andy Parker turned the final score of the half with a four-yard touchdown run.
Hoskins commanded the Knight air attack going 18-for-30 for 331 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. His main target, Winter, tallied seven receptions and 128 yards with a touchdown. Parker led the Knights on the ground with 96 yards and a touchdown. Hammes added 74 yards and two touchdowns.
NEXT WEEK: Augsburg travels to Benedette-Wehrlie Stadium in Naperville, Ill., for its first-ever meeting with North Central College (Ill.) next Saturday (9/18) at 7 p.m. Wartburg opens Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play with a game at Buena Vista (Iowa) next Saturday at 1 p.m.
