Augsburg falls 31-24 to North Central (Ill.) on the road

Football 9/18/04 -- North Central (Ill.) 31, Augsburg 24

BOXSCORE

NAPERVILLE, Ill. (9/18/04) -- Steve Holden (Jr., Chicago, Ill./Dunbar HS) rushed 33 times for 260 yards and two touchdowns, becoming North Central University's all-time leading ground-gainer, as the Cardinals rallied from an 18-7 deficit to surpass visiting Augsburg College 31-24 in a nonconference football game Saturday night at Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium.

North Central used a nine-play, 80-yard, 4:28 drive to take its final lead of the game, culminated with a Sam Fullerton (Jr., Chicago, Ill./Hubbard HS) two-yard run with 1:53 remaining in the fourth quarter.

Augsburg had a chance to tie the game, as the Auggies converted two fourth-down plays with passes from quarterback Tony George (Jr., Blaine, Minn.) to tight end Andrew Neumann (So., Somerset, Wis.). Augsburg reached the North Central 36-yard line, but with 15 seconds left, George fumbled on the snap exchange, and North Central's Anthony Imbordino (So., Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield Central HS) recovered to effectively end the game.

The game was a tale of two halves, as Augsburg built an 18-7 first-half lead before North Central rallied in the second half, outscoring the Auggies 24-6 down the stretch.

After Augsburg held a time-of-possession advantage in the first half of 18:15 to 11:45 (with 42 offensive plays to North Central's 32), the Cardinals turned things around in the second half. North Central had 43 plays to Augsburg's 30 in the second half, and held the ball for 20:32 to Augsburg's 9:28.

North Central outgained Augsburg by a 286-127 margin in the second half, putting together a total of 488 yards of offense in the game to Augsburg's 251. Augsburg had just five net rushing yards in the game, compared to North Central's 339.

A 71-yard opening kickoff return by Marcus LeVesseur (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn./Bloomington Kennedy HS) set up Augsburg's first score, a 29-yard field goal by Nick Schlieman (Jr., Burnsville, Minn.).

A 25-yard Holden touchdown on the next drive gave the Cardinals the lead, but Augsburg took the lead back with two first-half scores. After a sack by Joe Cullen (Sr., Coon Rapids, Minn.) ended a North Central drive, platoon quarterback LeVesseur drove the Auggies 36 yards on eight plays for the go-ahead score, throwing his first collegiate touchdown pass on a 14-yard strike to Shawn Johnson (Sr., Faribault, Minn.).

Ricky Schreier (So., Maplewood, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) claimed two interceptions in the second quarter, his second leading to an Auggie score. His 39-yard return gave the Auggies the ball at the North Central 4-yard line, George threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Ben Bothun (Sr., Dawson, Minn./Dawson-Boyd HS), giving the Auggies an 18-7 advantage.

North Central closed the first half on a 24-yard field goal by Mike Augustine (Sr., Des Moines, Iowa/Dowling HS), completing a seven-play, 81-yard drive.

An 11-play, 54-yard drive to open the second half resulted in a missed 33-yard field goal by Augustine, as Cullen picked up another key sack to force the Cardinals to try the field goal. However, Augsburg could not convert and was forced to punt. The Cardinals drove on the subsequent drive for a score, as Holden rushed for 39 of North Central's 55 yards on the drive, capped off with a five-yard scoring run.

Augsburg again went 3-and-out, and North Central scored on the subsequent drive again, driving 48 yards on five plays, capped with a 10-yard scoring pass from Kam Kniss (So., Lanark, Ill./Eastland HS) to Tyke Spencer (Jr., Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central HS).

Augsburg gained its last score on a 65-yard pass from LeVesseur to Johnson, as the receiver broke free from the defense and sprinted for the score with 19 seconds left in the third quarter. Augsburg only got the ball three more times in the fourth quarter, ending with two punts and the game-closing fumble.

The 260 yards give Holden 2,421 career yards, eclipsing the old North Central record of 2,286, set by Mike Jakovich from 1974-78.

Kniss threw for 149 yards on 12-of-19 passing for the Cardinals. Fullback Matt Edgcomb (Sr. Peru, Ill./LaSalle-Peru HS) rushed for 75 yards on 12 carries, and Spencer caught four passes for 71 yards.

For Augsburg, George threw for 119 yards on 10-of-23 passing, while LeVesseur threw for 127 yards on 9-of-18 passing. Johsnon had a career-best 120 receiving yards on four carries, while Newman caught four passes for 41 yards, Bothun caught five passes for 38 yards and Yarzue Slowon (Sr., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) caught five passes for 37 yards. Steve Houser (Jr., Zimmerman, Minn./Elk River HS) rushed for 44 yards on 13 carries.

Defensively, Jake Koelln (Jr., Rochester, Minn./John Marshall HS) had 10 tackles (six solo), including two sacks for a loss of 15 yards. Jordan Hastings (Jr., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) had nine tackles (five solo), with John Golnitz (Sr., Green Bay, Wis./Preble HS) adding nine tackles (two solo) and Cullen contributing eight (seven solo), including two sacks and four tackles for loss.

Ben Hare (Jr., Marengo, Ill.) and Lenny Radtke (Jr., Carol Stream, Ill./Glenbard North HS) led the Cardinals with 10 tackles each (seven solo each), with Hare contributing four sacks. Mike Tenerelli (Jr., Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard South HS) had seven tackles (five solo).

Augsburg hosts St. Thomas in its Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener on Saturday (9/25) at 1 p.m. at Edor Nelson Field, while North Central hosts Washington (Mo.) next Saturday at 7 p.m.

Augsburg vs. North Central (Ill.) Game Notes

THE GAME: The Augsburg College Auggies (0-1 overall, 0-0 MIAC) travel to Naperville, Ill., to face the North Central College Cardinals (1-0 overall, 0-0 CCIW) in a nonconference football game on Saturday, Sept. 18 at 7 p.m., at North Central's Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium (capacity 7,000).

COACHES: Augsburg head coach Jack Osberg (Augsburg '62) is in his 14th season and has a 60-72 career mark. North Central head coach John Thorne (Illinois Wesleyan '69) is in his second season and has a 14-7 career record.

RADIO: This week's Augsburg football game is cybercast online on Augsburg's website, through an arrangement with the campus online radio station, KAUG. Tom Witschen will handle play-by-play. The radio broadcast, scheduled for KSNB AM 950, will be pre-empted by KSNB's coverage of St. Paul Saints baseball playoff games, though the Augsburg game will still be broadcast online. To listen online, go to http://www.augsburg.edu/athletics/ and click on the "Live Audio" link on Saturday. North Central radio is on WONC-FM 89.1. North Central games are also available on the web by going to http://www.wonc.org/main.html.

SERIES: This is the first-ever meeting between Augsburg and North Central, and the first time Augsburg has faced a team from the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin in the school's 73 seasons of football. This is also just the second-ever Augsburg game to be played in the state of Illinois and third-ever game against an Illinois team; Augsburg faced Illinois College in a nonconference game on Sept. 10, 1988, losing 20-13. Augsburg hosted Illinois College the following year, falling 10-0.

LAST WEEK: Augsburg dropped a 27-24 decision to national No. 5 Wartburg (Iowa) last Saturday at Augsburg's Edor Nelson Field, while North Central opened its season with a 34-0 win over Benedictine (Ill.) last Saturday at Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium.

AUGGIES FALL TO NO. 5 WARTBURG ON LAST-SECOND FG: Jordan Maus hit a 40-yard field goal as time expired on Saturday, giving Wartburg College a 27-24 victory over Augsburg College in a nonconference football game before 1,885 fans at Augsburg's Edor Nelson Field.

Maus' buzzer-beater capped a wild finish to the back-and-forth contest. With the game tied at 24-24, Augsburg had a chance to win the game, when Andy Matzke picked off a pass at the Wartburg 45-yard line with 1:08 left. But Augsburg could only advance the ball to the Wartburg 36, with a key play a nine-yard sack of Auggie quarterback Tony George.

With 19 seconds left in regulation, Augsburg's Nick Schlieman attempted a career-high and school-record 53-yard field goal, but missed just short, giving the Knights one more possession from their own 37. Two long passes gave the Knights the ball at the Augsburg 18 with time running out.

Wartburg scrambled to attempt a game-winning 33-yard field goal, and Augsburg's Ricky Schreier blocked the attempt, seemingly ending the fourth quarter and setting up overtime. However, in the scramble to get a field goal off, Wartburg was whistled for a dead-ball, illegal-procedure penalty, stopping the clock with three seconds left and giving the Knights another opportunity to secure the win. After a time out to ice the kicker, Wartburg's Maus connected on a 40-yard field goal, his second successful try of the game, to win it.

Wartburg, ranked No. 5 in the Division III national polls, produced 520 yards of total offense -- 236 yards of rushing by Andy Parker with two touchdowns, and 232 yards of passing by Hoskins. However, Augsburg's defense forced five Wartburg interceptions, two each by Jordan Hastings and Matzke, and one by Ross Peroutka.

Augsburg was paced by running back Steve Houser, who rushed 23 times for 104 yards and two touchdowns. Marcus LeVesseur rushed nine times for 34 yards. Tony George had 15 completions for 127 yards, with Yarzue Slowon catching seven passes for 64 yards. Andrew Neumann caught five passes for 49 yards and Ben Bothun caught four passes for 34 yards.

Houser had TD runs of 15 and 46 yards, with Hastings adding a 64-yard interception return for a score in the third quarter. Kyle Danner hit a 23-yard field goal for the Auggies.

Matzke led the Auggie defense with two interceptions and 13 tackles (eight solo). Jim Gunderson had nine tackles, and Schreier had eight tackles.

FIRST FOOTBALL GAME FOR NEW SPRINTURF AT EDOR NELSON FIELD: Last Saturday's game was the first for Augsburg on its new Sprinturf surface at Edor Nelson Field. Work on the $400,000 turf replacement project began June 16 and was completed in early August. The existing Astroturf surface (installed in 1993) was removed and the new Sprinturf synthetic-grass surface was installed over the current asphalt base with an infill of a rubber-sand mix. With St. John's installing Sprinturf in 2002 and St. Thomas installing FieldTurf on its O'Shaughnessy Stadium surface this year, there are three MIAC schools now with artificial turf surfaces.

As the MIAC football team that has played the most on artificial-turf fields, Augsburg is 41-34 on turf since 1991 (when Jack Osberg was named head coach) and 44-65-1 since 1984. The turf totals include an 8-10 all-time record in games played on turf indoors (7-10 at the Metrodome, 1-0 at the Fargodome). Augsburg's all-time football record at Edor Nelson Field is 37-55-1; 34-27 under Osberg.

FIVE INTERCEPTIONS AGAINST WARTBURG ON SATURDAY: Augsburg's experienced secondary played a big role in the close game against Wartburg on Saturday, picking off five passes, more than half of the total number of pickoffs the Auggies had all of last season -- nine. Andy Matzke (Jr., Faribault, Minn.) and Jordan Hastings (Jr., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) had two pickoffs apiece, with Ross Peroutka (Jr., Faribault, Minn.) added another interception. Hastings returned one of his interceptions for a 64-yard touchdown in the third quarter.

HOUSER HAS BREAKOUT RUNNING DAY AGAINST WARTBURG: Augsburg running back Steve Houser (Jr., Zimmerman, Minn./Elk River HS) had a breakout rushing performance against Wartburg on Saturday, with 104 yards on 23 carries and two touchdowns. The 104-yard effort was the second-best rushing performance of his career. He rushed for 128 yards on 29 carries in a win over Carleton last season, the lone 100-yard rushing effort by an Auggie last season. His two-touchdown effort, on runs of 15 and 46 yards, was also a career high.

The performance is just the fifth 100-yard rushing game for an Auggie since the 2001 season. T.J. Bramwell had two 100-yard performances in the 2002 season (170 yards against Carleton, 133 yards against Bethel), and Ben Paul had one in 2001 (131 yards against St. Olaf).

ON THE INJURY FRONT: Only one significant injury from the first week of the season. Backup halfback Brady Seesz (So., Northfield, Minn.) is doubtful for Saturday's game with a strained hamstring, head coach Jack Osberg reports. Newcomer Jason Potts (Fr., Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) will replace him in the two-deep lineup.

OSBERG NOW AUGSBURG'S ALL-TIME FOOTBALL VICTORY LEADER: Augsburg head coach Jack Osberg has been the architect of a rebirth of Augsburg College football since he was named head coach in 1991. Last season, Osberg passed his former coach, Edor Nelson, to become the winningest coach in school history. Osberg, a 1962 Augsburg graduate, is in his 14th season with the Auggies and has a 60-72 career record. Nelson went 56-118-10 from 1947-69. Osberg also has the most MIAC wins (48-66-0) of any Augsburg coach, and his career overall winning percentage of .455 is second-best in school history. Augsburg has had seven .500-or-above seasons under Osberg, the second-most for a coach in school history. Nelson had eight in his 23 years. Bill Caris (1972-75) was 19-19, for the school's best winning percentage of .500. Osberg has the third-longest tenure among current MIAC football coaches, behind St. John's John Gagliardi (56th season, 52nd at St. John's in 2004) and Bethel's Steve Johnson (16th season).

THIRD STRAIGHT SEASON WITH TWO REGULAR-SEASON NONCONFERENCE GAMES: With Macalester having dropped its MIAC affiliation for football for a five-year span, Augsburg has to play two nonconference games in its 10-game regular-season schedule. After Carleton joined the MIAC in 1983 to give the conference 10 football schools, Augsburg played nine conference games from 1983 to 2001, with the exception of 1991, when a game against Gustavus was cancelled due to the infamous Halloween blizzard.

Last season, Augsburg went 1-1 in nonconference games, topping Jamestown (N.D.) 20-19 before falling to Wisconsin-Eau Claire 52-20. In 2002, Augsburg also went 1-1 in nonconference games, topping Dakota State (S.D.) 44-14 and losing to Wisconsin-Eau Claire (37-13).

Prior to 2002, Augsburg's last regular-season schedule with two nonconference games was 1983, when Augsburg defeated Buena Vista (Iowa) 29-24 on Sept. 3 and lost to Bemidji State 23-7 at the Metrodome on Nov. 20. That season, Augsburg went 4-7, the only year that Augsburg has had an 11-game regular season. Augsburg played three nonconference games in its MIAC championship season of 1997 (10-2), with its regular season win at Valley City State (N.D., 24-20 on Sept. 6) and two games in the NCAA Division III national playoffs (34-22 win over Concordia-Moorhead at the Fargodome on Nov. 15 and 61-21 loss at Simpson (Iowa) on Nov. 22.).

HIGH-PROFILE AUGGIE WRESTLERS PULLING DOUBLE-DUTY: Augsburg has developed a reputation as the most dominant team in small-college wrestling. Augsburg has won a record eight NCAA Division III national titles (1991, 1993, 1995, 1997, 1998, 2000, 2001, 2002), while finishing second seven times (1984, 1990, 1992, 1996, 1999, 2003, 2004).

This season, several Augsburg wrestlers are pulling double-duty as members of the football team. The highest-profile wrestler playing football this season is quarterback Marcus LeVesseur (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn./Bloomington Kennedy HS), who has won two straight national titles at 157 pounds. He is 84-0 in his two seasons at Augsburg.

Another wrestling All-American, Joe Cullen (Sr., Coon Rapids, Minn.), is a two-time All-MIAC football honorable mention selection on the defensive line. He finished seventh nationally at 197 pounds in the 2004 wrestling national championships. Andrew Neumann (So., Somerset, Wis.), also a 197-pound wrestler, is Augsburg's starting tight end. Last season, Neumann caught 44 passes for 498 yards and a touchdown, the most catches and yards for an Auggie tight end since 1997.

Greg Brendemuehl (Jr., Medford, Minn.), a 2003 wrestling All-American (125 pounds, 6th place), is in his first season as a defensive back for the Auggies, joining fellow wrestler Kirk Rall (Jr., West St. Paul, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) in the backfield, with Rich Miller (Jr., Anoka, Minn.) at linebacker. Transferring to Augsburg this year is Zak Jensen (Jr., Hopkins, Minn.) from Northern Illinois, who will play football (defensive line) and wrestle. He was a two-time state wrestling qualifier (2000, 2001) at Hopkins HS.

One other football/wrestling connection: Johnny Grygelko (Fr., Loretto, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville HS), grandson of former Augsburg coach John Grygelko (1972-80), is a linebacker this season. He was a two-time state competitor in high school wrestling.

A story on Augsburg's football/wrestling connection is online on the Wrestling Mall website: http://www.wrestlingmall.com/htmls/news.asp?Cat=3&View=9470

SCOUTING THE CARDINALS: North Central has begun to turn the corner toward the upper echelon of the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin, under second-year head coach John Thorne. Thorne, a veteran of 22 years of high school coaching in the area, took over a North Central program that had not had back-to-back six-win seasons since 1979-80, nor a winning season in the previous five years before his arrival. Taking over a 3-7 team in 2001, the Cardinals finished 6-4 in 2002 and 7-3 in 2003, including a 4-3 mark in the CCIW.

North Central kicked off the 2004 season with a flourish last Saturday. The Cardinals raced to a 17-0 halftime lead against nonconference rival Benedictine (Ill.) and never looked back en route to a 34-0 home win.

Junior running back Steve Holden led the way, rushing for 197 yards on 21 carries and one touchdown. He moved to within 125 yards of the career rushing mark of 2,286 held by Mike Jakovich '79. Sophomore quarterback Kam Kniss was also sharp, completing 15 of 23 yards for one TD. His favorite receiver was junior Tyler Didier who caught eight passes for 117 yards. A Kniss-to-Spencer connection was also reestablished, although this time it was Tyke Spencer, a junior transfer from Indiana University and younger brother of last year's leading receiver, Brad Spencer.

North Central wasted little time in getting on the scoreboard first, driving 51 yards in seven plays on its opening possession with a 28-yard pass from Kniss to Spencer. After forcing Benedictine to punt on its ensuing possession, the Cardinals increased their lead to 10-0 after a 26-yard field goal from senior Mike Augustine. The Cardinals capped the first-half scoring with a 6-yard TD run from Holden for a 17-0 lead.

The second half featured much of the same action as the first. Kniss scrambled for a 10-yard TD run, senior Matt Edgcomb rushed four yards for a TD, and sophomore Ben Aguilar booted a 34-yard field goal for the final score of 31-0.

The Cardinal defense was just as impressive, holding the Eagles (0-2) to 114 total net yards. Junior Mike Tenerelli led the defense with eight tackles and one pass defense. Junior Ben Hare had 3.5 tackles for a loss of 24 yards, which included two sacks for a loss of 18 yards. Junior Seth Livingston and sophomore Anthony Imbordino also recorded sacks and freshman Adam Pennington had an interception.

NEXT WEEK: Augsburg opens Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play with a home game against St. Thomas next Saturday (9/25) at 1 p.m. at Edor Nelson Field. North Central has its third home game in its first four weeks of the season next Saturday, hosting Washington (Mo.) next Saturday at 7 p.m. at Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium.
