Augsburg led 14-7 at halftime, but several big special teams plays enabled St. Thomas to get back into the game. On St. Thomas' first drive of the third quarter, the Tommies used a fake punt run and took advantage of a fumbled punt return to get in position for a field goal, but a 25-yard attempt by Adam Valenta (Fr., Cedra Rapids, Iowa/Xavier HS) hit the crossbar.
However, on the next drive, St. Thomas' Ben Kessler (Jr., Janesville, Wis./Craig HS) blocked an Augsburg punt, which Luke Rezac (Jr., Lonsdale, Minn./Bethlehem Academy HS) returned 18 yards for a touchdown.
A special teams play enabled Augsburg to re-take the lead, as
Marcus LeVesseur (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn./Bloomington Kennedy HS) returned the ensuing kickoff 63 yards to the St. Thomas 27-yard line. Six plays later, LeVesseur threw a 12-yard scoring pass to
Ty Closson (Sr., Northfield, Minn.), giving the Auggies a 21-14 lead.
On the second drive of the fourth quarter, St. Thomas' Peter Ridley (Sr., Mendota Heights, Minn./St. Thomas Academy HS) scored on a 62-yard punt return, tying the game at 21-21.
Augsburg turned the ball over five times in the game, including two interceptions by the Tommies' Steve Groth (Sr., Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview HS) on the Auggies' final two drives.
Groth's first pickoff of a LeVesseur pass gave the Tommies the ball at their own 31-yard line with 3:33 left in the game. The Tommies drove the ball 69 yards in seven plays, setting up Dosh' 10-yard touchdown. Augsburg drove the ball to near midfield on its final drive, before Groth claimed his second pickoff on a bobbled pass at the Tommie 33-yard line with 1:13 remaining.
Augsburg took the early lead with scores on two of its first three drives of the game. A nine-play, 61-yard drive resulted in the Auggies' first score, a 20-yard pass from LeVesseur to Yarzue Slowon (Sr., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS). On the Auggies' next drive, LeVesseur scampered 62 yards on an option run to the Tommie 2-yard line, and
Steve Houser (Jr., Zimmerman, Minn./Elk River HS) capped the drive with a two-yard plunge for the touchdown.
St. Thomas quarterback Ryan Jansen (So., Foley, Minn.) had a stretch of 11 straight completions in the first half, including a 46-yard touchdown pass to P.J. Theisen (So., Elko, Minn./New Prague HS) early in the second quarter.
Jansen completed 21-of-34 passes for 258 yards, as St. Thomas outgained the Auggies by a 405-357 margin. Theisen caught five passes for 91 yards to lead the Tommies, while Joe Lepsche (Jr. Woodbury, Minn.) caught five passes for 47 yards. Dosh rushed 20 times for 82 yards, and Ridley rushed five times for 47 yards.
LeVesseur, making his first collegiate start at quarterback after platooning with
Tony George (Jr., Blaine, Minn.) in Augsburg's first two games, compiled 138 passing yards on 9-of-29 passing. He also had 198 all-purpose yards -- 135 rushing yards on 23 carries and his 63 yards on the kickoff return.
Houser rushed for 63 yards on 17 carries, and Slowon produced 170 all-purpose yards -- catching three passes for 56 yards, returning five punts for four yards and four kickoffs for 110 yards.
Defensively, St. Thomas was paced by Andy Ubbelohde (Jr., Red Wing, Minn.), who had 12 tackles (five solo), including 1.5 sacks and 2.5 tackles for loss. Dustin Peltier (Sr., Plymouth, Minn./Totino-Grace HS) had 11 tackles (four solo), Mike Rouse (So., Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View HS) had 10 tackles (three solo), and Kessler had nine tackles, including a sack. Andy Matzke (Jr., Faribault, Minn.) had nine tackles apiece, and
Joe Cullen (Sr., Coon Rapids, Minn.) had three tackles for loss, including two sacks.

LAST YEAR: Ben Paul scored a one-yard touchdown with 1:23 remaining in the game, lifting Augsburg to a 17-14, come-from-behind victory over St. Thomas on Oct. 25, 2003 at Edor Nelson Field.
Trailing 7-3 midway through the fourth quarter,
Jamie Smith caught a 25-yard touchdown pass from
Tony George with 8:59 left in the fourth quarter to give the Auggies their first lead of the game at 10-7. But St. Thomas took the lead back when it got the ball, as the Tommies used a nine-play, 77-yard drive over four minutes to score. P.J. Theisen caught a six-yard pass from Kyle Sherwin to give the Tommies a 14-10 advantage with 4:59 left.
Augsburg claimed the victory on its subsequent drive, as the Auggies drove 68 yards in 12 plays to score the game-winning touchdown. Paul gained 31 of the 68 yards on the final drive -- nine on a pass reception from George early in the drive, and the final 22 yards on five straight carries. The Tommies had one final chance to claim the victory, but their drive was stalled on downs at the St. Thomas 31-yard line on an incomplete pass, as
Jake Schmiesing broke up a Sherwin pass on fourth down.
The game was a defensive struggle throughout, as the teams had seven turnovers -- four by St. Thomas, three by Augsburg. Augsburg managed just 266 yards of total offense, while St. Thomas claimed just 305. Both teams threw two interceptions in the first half, with the Tommies' Nick Navarro claiming both UST pickoffs.
Ross Peroutka and
Jordan Hastings had interceptions for Augsburg.
In an early battle for field position, the Tommies used a three-play, 42-yard drive to score their first touchdown. Walter Dosh gained 39 yards on two rushes, setting the stage for a Justin Kostner three-yard rush to give the Tommies a 7-0 lead with 1:19 left in the first quarter. Neither team scored again until midway through the third quarter, as Augsburg's
Nick Schlieman connected on a 25-yard field goal.
St. Thomas' defense held Augsburg quarterback George to just 139 yards passing on 9-of-30 attempts. Smith caught three passes for 76 yards, with
Andrew Neumann catching two passes for 35 yards. Augsburg gained 127 yards on the ground, with
Steve Houser gaining 67 yards on 16 carries, and Paul gaining 52 yards on 14 carries.
St. Thomas used two quarterbacks in the game, with starter Justin Lockrem completing 12-of-23 passes for 85 yards and two interceptions. He was relieved early in the fourth quarter by Sherwin, who threw for 109 yards and a touchdown, completing 10-of-13. Theisen caught five passes for 44 yards, with Joel Korte catching five passes for 49 yards. Kostner's 66 yards on 23 rushes led the Tommie running backs, with Dosh rushing eight times for 48 yards, collecting 140 all-purpose yards. He also had 76 yards on three punt returns, including a 59-yarder in the first quarter, and one kickoff return for 16 yards.

SECOND LAST-MINUTE AUGGIE NONCONFERENCE LOSS: Steve Holden rushed 33 times for 260 yards and two touchdowns, becoming North Central University's all-time leading ground-gainer, as the Cardinals rallied from an 18-7 deficit to surpass visiting Augsburg College 31-24 in a nonconference football game last Saturday (9/18) at Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium.
North Central used a nine-play, 80-yard, 4:28 drive to take its final lead of the game, culminated with a Sam Fullerton two-yard run with 1:53 remaining in the fourth quarter. Augsburg had a chance to tie the game, as the Auggies converted two fourth-down plays with passes from quarterback
Tony George (Jr., Blaine, Minn.) to tight end
Andrew Neumann (So., Somerset, Wis.). Augsburg reached the North Central 36-yard line, but with 15 seconds left, George fumbled on the snap exchange, and North Central's Anthony Imbordino recovered to effectively end the game.
The game was a tale of two halves, as Augsburg built an 18-7 first-half lead before North Central rallied in the second half, outscoring the Auggies 24-6 down the stretch. After Augsburg held a time-of-possession advantage in the first half of 18:15 to 11:45 (with 42 offensive plays to North Central's 32), the Cardinals turned things around in the second half. North Central had 43 plays to Augsburg's 30 in the second half, and held the ball for 20:32 to Augsburg's 9:28. North Central outgained Augsburg by a 286-127 margin in the second half, putting together a total of 488 yards of offense in the game to Augsburg's 251. Augsburg had just five net rushing yards in the game, compared to North Central's 339.
A 71-yard opening kickoff return by
Marcus LeVesseur (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn./Bloomington Kennedy HS) set up Augsburg's first score, a 29-yard field goal by
Nick Schlieman (Jr., Burnsville, Minn.). A 25-yard Holden touchdown on the next drive gave the Cardinals the lead, but Augsburg took the lead back with two first-half scores. After a sack by
Joe Cullen (Sr., Coon Rapids, Minn.) ended a North Central drive, platoon quarterback LeVesseur drove the Auggies 36 yards on eight plays for the go-ahead score, throwing his first collegiate touchdown pass on a 14-yard strike to
Shawn Johnson (Sr., Faribault, Minn.).
Ricky Schreier (So., Maplewood, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) claimed two interceptions in the second quarter, his second leading to an Auggie score. His 39-yard return gave the Auggies the ball at the North Central 4-yard line, George threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to
Ben Bothun (Sr., Dawson, Minn./Dawson-Boyd HS), giving the Auggies an 18-7 advantage.
Augsburg gained its last score on a 65-yard pass from LeVesseur to Johnson, as the receiver broke free from the defense and sprinted for the score with 19 seconds left in the third quarter. Augsburg only got the ball three more times in the fourth quarter, ending with two punts and the game-closing fumble.
George threw for 119 yards on 10-of-23 passing, while LeVesseur threw for 127 yards on 9-of-18 passing. Johsnon had a career-best 120 receiving yards on four carries, while Newman caught four passes for 41 yards, Bothun caught five passes for 38 yards and Yarzue Slowon (Sr., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) caught five passes for 37 yards.
Steve Houser (Jr., Zimmerman, Minn./Elk River HS) rushed for 44 yards on 13 carries.
Defensively,
Jake Koelln (Jr., Rochester, Minn./John Marshall HS) had 10 tackles (six solo), including two sacks for a loss of 15 yards.
Jordan Hastings (Jr., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) had nine tackles (five solo), with
John Golnitz (Sr., Green Bay, Wis./Preble HS) adding nine tackles (two solo) and Cullen contributing eight (seven solo), including two sacks and four tackles for loss.
SECOND FOOTBALL GAME FOR NEW SPRINTURF AT EDOR NELSON FIELD: Augsburg's season-opening home game with Wartburg (Iowa) was the first football game on the new Sprinturf surface at Edor Nelson Field. Work on the $400,000 turf replacement project began June 16 and was completed in early August. The existing Astroturf surface (installed in 1993) was removed and the new Sprinturf synthetic-grass surface was installed over the current asphalt base with an infill of a rubber-sand mix. With St. John's installing Sprinturf in 2002 and St. Thomas installing FieldTurf on its O'Shaughnessy Stadium surface this year, there are three MIAC schools now with artificial turf surfaces.
As the MIAC football team that has played the most on artificial-turf fields, Augsburg is 41-34 on turf since 1991 (when
Jack Osberg was named head coach) and 44-65-1 since 1984. The turf totals include an 8-10 all-time record in games played on turf indoors (7-10 at the Metrodome, 1-0 at the Fargodome). Augsburg's all-time football record at Edor Nelson Field is 37-55-1; 34-27 under Osberg.
SEVEN INTERCEPTIONS ALREADY THIS SEASON: Augsburg's experienced secondary has played a big role in the team's two close games to start the season. The Auggies already have seven interceptions -- tied with St. John's for second-best overall in the MIAC behind Bethel's eight. Last year, Augsburg had nine interceptions in its 10 games. Augsburg's seven pickoffs rank sixth-best nationally (tie) in Division III. Elmhurst (Ill.) has 10 interceptions to lead the nation.
Against Wartburg (Iowa) on Sept. 11, Augsburg picked off five passes.
Andy Matzke (Jr., Faribault, Minn.) and
Jordan Hastings (Jr., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) had two pickoffs apiece, with
Ross Peroutka (Jr., Faribault, Minn.) added another interception. Hastings returned one of his interceptions for a 64-yard touchdown in the third quarter.
Against North Central (Ill.) last week, Augsburg claimed two second-quarter interceptions, both by
Ricky Schreier (So., Maplewood, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS). His second pickoff, with a 39-yard return giving the Auggies the ball at the North Central 4-yard line, led to an Augsburg TD, as three plays later, the Auggies converted a 10-yard touchdown pass.
NEW ADDITION TO AUGGIE DEFENSE: Chris Abbott (Sr., Inver Grove Heights, Minn./St. Thomas Academy HS) has been added to the Augsburg defense, and is listed as the starting strong safety for Saturday's game. Abbott was a late addition to the Auggie roster, having transferred from South Dakota State University. He appeared in 12 games over the last two seasons at SDSU as a reserve defensive back, with nine tackles (six solo).
HOUSER HAS BREAKOUT RUNNING DAY AGAINST WARTBURG: Augsburg running back
Steve Houser (Jr., Zimmerman, Minn./Elk River HS) had a breakout rushing performance against Wartburg on Sept. 11, with 104 yards on 23 carries and two touchdowns. The 104-yard effort was the second-best rushing performance of his career. He rushed for 128 yards on 29 carries in a win over Carleton last season, the lone 100-yard rushing effort by an Auggie last season. His two-touchdown effort, on runs of 15 and 46 yards, was also a career high.
The performance is just the fifth 100-yard rushing game for an Auggie since the 2001 season. T.J. Bramwell had two 100-yard performances in the 2002 season (170 yards against Carleton, 133 yards against Bethel), and Ben Paul had one in 2001 (131 yards against St. Olaf).
OSBERG NOW AUGSBURG'S ALL-TIME FOOTBALL VICTORY LEADER: Augsburg head coach
Jack Osberg has been the architect of a rebirth of Augsburg College football since he was named head coach in 1991. Last season, Osberg passed his former coach, Edor Nelson, to become the winningest coach in school history. Osberg, a 1962 Augsburg graduate, is in his 14th season with the Auggies and has a 60-73 career record. Nelson went 56-118-10 from 1947-69. Osberg also has the most MIAC wins (48-66-0) of any Augsburg coach, and his career overall winning percentage of .451 is second-best in school history. Augsburg has had seven .500-or-above seasons under Osberg, the second-most for a coach in school history. Nelson had eight in his 23 years. Bill Caris (1972-75) was 19-19, for the school's best winning percentage of .500. Osberg has the third-longest tenure among current MIAC football coaches, behind St. John's John Gagliardi (56th season, 52nd at St. John's in 2004) and Bethel's Steve Johnson (16th season).
HIGH-PROFILE AUGGIE WRESTLERS PULLING DOUBLE-DUTY: Augsburg has developed a reputation as the most dominant team in small-college wrestling. Augsburg has won a record eight NCAA Division III national titles (1991, 1993, 1995, 1997, 1998, 2000, 2001, 2002), while finishing second seven times (1984, 1990, 1992, 1996, 1999, 2003, 2004).
This season, several Augsburg wrestlers are pulling double-duty as members of the football team. The highest-profile wrestler playing football this season is quarterback
Marcus LeVesseur (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn./Bloomington Kennedy HS), who has won two straight national titles at 157 pounds. He is 84-0 in his two seasons at Augsburg.
Another wrestling All-American,
Joe Cullen (Sr., Coon Rapids, Minn.), is a two-time All-MIAC football honorable mention selection on the defensive line. He finished seventh nationally at 197 pounds in the 2004 wrestling national championships.
Andrew Neumann (So., Somerset, Wis.), also a 197-pound wrestler, is Augsburg's starting tight end. Last season, Neumann caught 44 passes for 498 yards and a touchdown, the most catches and yards for an Auggie tight end since 1997.
Greg Brendemuehl (Jr., Medford, Minn.), a 2003 wrestling All-American (125 pounds, 6th place), is in his first season as a defensive back for the Auggies, joining fellow wrestler
Kirk Rall (Jr., West St. Paul, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) in the backfield, with Rich Miller (Jr., Anoka, Minn.) at linebacker. Transferring to Augsburg this year is
Zak Jensen (Jr., Hopkins, Minn.) from Northern Illinois, who will play football (defensive line) and wrestle. He was a two-time state wrestling qualifier (2000, 2001) at Hopkins HS.
One other football/wrestling connection:
Johnny Grygelko (Fr., Loretto, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville HS), grandson of former Augsburg coach John Grygelko (1972-80), is a linebacker this season. He was a two-time state competitor in high school wrestling.
A story on Augsburg's football/wrestling connection is online on the Wrestling Mall website: http://www.wrestlingmall.com/htmls/news.asp?Cat=3&View=9470
SCOUTING THE TOMMIES: St. Thomas opened its season with a 21-12 victory over Coe (Iowa), a 2002 NCAA Division III playoff qualifier, on the road on Sept. 11, but opened MIAC play last Saturday with a 20-3 loss at home to Concordia-Moorhead.
Against the Cobbers, St. Thomas failed to score a touchdown for the first time in 32 games dating back to the 2000 season. St. Thomas also gave up four turnovers and were held to just 14 net rushing yards by the Cobber defense. The lone Tommie score was a 40-yard field goal by Adam Valenta.
Against Coe, St. Thomas scored 21 unanswered points in the second quarter to claim the victory, gaining 339 yards of total offense. Walter Dosh rushed for 115 yards on 26 carries, while Peter Ridley rushed 13 times for 75 yards, including a 48-yard rushing TD. The Tommie defense held Coe to just 176 yards of offense, behind 12 tackles from Andrew Ubbelohde, two sacks from Luke Rezac and a fumble recovery, forced fumble, sack and two tackles for loss by John Kaiser.
In two games, St. Thomas has allowed just 190 yards per game and has had 24 tackles for loss, including 11 sacks, tops among MIAC teams so far this season. Ubbelohde and Ben Kessler are two of three MIAC players to have three sacks so far this season, leading the league.
