Football 10/15/05 -- Augsburg 19, Hamline 13 (2OT)

BOXSCORE

MINNEAPOLIS (10/15/05) -- Ricky Schreier (Jr., Maplewood, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) caught a 27-yard touchdown pass from Marcus LeVesseur (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./Bloomington Kennedy HS) on Augsburg College's second play of the second overtime, giving the Auggies a 19-13 victory over Hamline University in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference football game Saturday afternoon at Augsburg's Edor Nelson Field.

Augsburg had the ball first in the first overtime, but missed a field goal attempt into the wind from 32 yards. On Hamline's first overtime possession, a 35-yard field goal attempt was blocked by Augsburg's Mike Matson (Jr., Cedar, Minn./St. Francis HS), his second blocked kick of the game. Hamline had the ball to start the second overtime, but missed a 30-yard field-goal attempt, setting the stage for Augsburg's game-winning touchdown pass.

Schreier recorded his third 100-yard receiving game of the season, catching seven passes for 110 yards. LeVesseur rushed for 74 yards on 26 carries and completed 20-of-26 passes for 185 yards, one touchdown and an interception. Garry Ashby-Phan (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./Roosevelt HS) rushed for 73 yards on nine carries, including a 29-yard touchdown early in the fourth quarter.

Augsburg is now 1-5 overall, 1-3 in MIAC play, netting the first collegiate victory for first-year Auggie head coach Frank Haege. Augsburg broke a nine-game losing streak, dating to last season, with the victory. Hamline is now 2-4 overall, 1-4 in MIAC play. The game was the first for a new trophy in the Augsburg-Hamline series, "The Hammer." Augsburg has won nine of the last 10 games in the all-time series with Hamline, a series the Pipers lead 40-24-2. Augsburg is now 3-3 all-time in overtime games, dating to the 1997 season.

LeVesseur opened the scoring for the Auggies on a 12-yard touchdown run on the second play of the second quarter, completing an eight-play, 59-yard drive.

In the third quarter, Augsburg's defense stopped Hamline on a fourth-down conversion attempt at the Augsburg 23-yard line, but on the Auggies' first play of the next drive, a rush was fumbled, giving the Pipers the ball at the 33. Four plays later, Ben Dahmes (Jr., Redwood Falls, Minn./Redwood Valley HS) scored on a three-yard rush. He gained all 33 yards on four rushes in the drive. Matson blocked the extra-point attempt, making the score 7-6 in favor of the Auggies.

Augsburg gained a short field on a short punt into the wind early in the fourth quarter, and the Auggies drove 43 yards on four plays for the go-ahead score, as Ashby-Phan, a transfer from Division II Concordia-St. Paul, notched his first touchdown as an Auggie on a 29-yard run. But an Augsburg extr-point attempt was missed.

Hamline then produced the longest sustained drive of the game, a 15-play, 75-yard drive consuming 8:09, to set up the tying score on a one-yard plunge by quarterback Andrew Seymour (So., Sandstone, Minn./East Central HS). An Augsburg drive then stalled near midfield, and Hamline downed the ball in the final minute to force overtime.

Dahmes rushed for 118 yards on 31 carries for the Pipers, while Ben Ganske (So., Eau Claire, Wis./Memorial HS) rushed 13 times for 38 yards. Seymour threw for 124 yards, completing 13-of-21 passes. Jeff Miller (Fr., South St. Paul, Minn.) caught five passes for 42 yards, with Brandon Johnson (So., Maplewood, Minn./North St. Paul HS) catching three passes for 37 yards.

Defensively, Matson produced a career-high 22 tackles (eight solo), including a sack and his two blocked kicks. Taylor Kroger (Sr., Cottonwood, Minn./Lakeview HS) also had a career-high tackle day, with 20 tackles (six solo) and a half-sack. Jordan Hastings (Sr., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) had 10 tackles (three solo), and Jake Koelln (Sr., Rochester, Minn./John Marshall HS) and Jim Gunderson (Sr., Hastings, Minn.) had nine tackles each.

Augsburg's Nick Schlieman (Sr., Burnsville, Minn.), the No. 2-ranked punter in the latest NCAA Division III national statistics, had four punts for a 45.2-yard average in the game, including a 58-yarder downed at the Hamline 2-yard line in the first quarter. Schlieman is averaging 44.5 yards per punt this season.

Brody Anderson (Jr., Floodwood, Minn.), Ryan Laube (Sr., Owen, Wis./Owen-Withee HS) and Tyler Schultz (Sr., Rollingstone, Minn./Lewiston-Altura HS) had nine tackles apiece for the Pipers, with Anderson adding a sack. Adam Hespen (Sr., Brooklyn Center, Minn.) had three tackles, and Paul Klees (So., Wabasha, Minn./Wabasha-Kellogg HS) had an interception and fumble recovery.

Augsburg travels to St. John's for an MIAC matchup at St. John's next Saturday (10/22) at 1 p.m. at Clemens Stadium in Collegeville, Minn. Hamline will host St. Olaf in an MIAC game next Saturday at 1 p.m. at Klas Field in St. Paul, Minn.

LAST YEAR: Ben Bothun caught nine passes for 157 yards and a school-record-tying four touchdowns, leading Augsburg to a 40-6 victory at Hamline on Oct. 16, 2004 at the Klas Center. Bothun's four touchdown catches, on passes of 51, 30, three and six yards from quarterback Marcus LeVesseur, tied a single-game school record for touchdowns in a game.

Augsburg put together a season-high 492 yards of total offense on 92 plays, while Hamline was limited to 222 yards of total offense and just 93 rushing yards. LeVesseur accounted for 321 of Augsburg's 492 yards in the game, rushing for a game-high 116 yards on 31 carries with a touchdown, while also accumulating 205 yards on 13-of-26 passing with four touchdowns and just one interception. In addition, he returned two kickoffs for 54 yards.

Hamline scored first, driving 90 yards in 10 plays -- accounting for 41 percent of its total offensive yards in the game. Piper quarterback Andy Gagnon completed passes of 11, 32 and 23 yards in the drive, and also scrambled for a 17-yard carry to the Augsburg 6-yard line. On the next play, Ryan Rasmussen rushed six yards for the opening score, but the extra point was blocked by Augsburg's Chris Abbott. Gagnon threw for 108 yards on 7-of-16 passing, while also rushing for 33 yards on nine carries. Ben Dahmes led the Pipers with 44 rushing yards on 16 carries, while Jeff Hanger caught five passes for 56 yards. Dan Ryks caught two passes for 39 yards.

After the Piper score, Augsburg drove to the Hamline 18-yard line, but a LeVesseur pass was intercepted by Hamline's Mike Van Loh at the Piper 7-yard line. Augsburg's defense forced Hamline to punt, and after a sack put Augsburg back nine yards to the Augsburg 49, LeVesseur completed his first touchdown pass to Bothun, a 51-yarder. Augsburg extended the lead on its last drive of the half, a drive aided by a key Piper penalty. Starting at the Augsburg 23-yard line with 3:52 left in the second quarter, Augsburg was stalled on a holding penalty and three incomplete passes. But on the punt attempt, Hamline was flagged for a personal-foul, roughing-the-kicker penalty, giving the Auggies an automatic first down at the Auggie 29. Ten plays later, LeVesseur scored on a one-yard rush to put the Auggies ahead 13-6 at halftime.

Augsburg used special teams again to set up another touchdown early in the third quarter. Bothun blocked a punt by Hamline's Ryan Laube, which Ty Closson returned 13 yards to the Hamline 12-yard line. On the next play, Jason Potts scored on a 12-yard rush. Potts rushed for 78 yards on 13 carries for the Auggies, while Steve Houser had 55 yards on 13 carries.

Augsburg scored on three straight possessions in the fourth quarter to clinch the victory. LeVesseur found Bothun for a 30-yard scoring pass to complete a seven-play, 43-yard drive with 13:26 left. After a Hamline three-and-out, the Pipers punted to give the Auggies the ball at the Hamline 46. A 14-yard end-around by Ricky Schreier and a 20-yard reception by Schreier set up a three-yard touchdown pass from LeVesseur to Bothun with 10:07 left. Schreier caught four passes for 48 yards in the game. Augsburg's Taylor Kroger then intercepted a Gagnon pass at the Hamline 41-yard line. Six plays later, including three rushes for 24 yards by Houser, LeVesseur found Bothun again for a six-yard scoring pass.

Augsburg had a balanced defensive attack, with 11 players with three or more tackles on the day. Jim Gunderson led the Auggies with eight tackles (three solo), while Ross Peroutka had seven tackles (four solo) and two pass breakups. Joe Cullen and Jake Koelln each had a sack for the Auggies. Joey Miller led the Pipers with 14 tackles (seven solo), while Russ Flaten had 12 tackles (four solo) and Brody Anderson had 11 tackles (four solo) and a fumble recovery. Tyler Schultz had 11 tackles (four solo), and Aaron Seliga had a sack.

SCHLIEMAN AMONG NATION'S PUNTING LEADERS: Augsburg's Nick Schlieman (Sr., Burnsville, Minn.) continues to lead the MIAC in punting, averaging 43.7 yards per punt (overall) with 25 tries this season.

For the second straight week, Schlieman has the second-highest punting average among NCAA Division III punters. Jesse Harms of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy (Conn.) has the highest average, at 43.9. There are only five punters nationally in Division III averaging 43.0 yards or better per punt, according to this week's national statistics.

As a comparison to players in other collegiate divisions, there are 23 Division I-A punters averaging 43.0 yards or better per punt (leader is Arizona's Danny Baugher at 48.41), seven Division I-AA punters averaging 43.0 yards or better per punt (leader is Erik Contos of Delaware State at 45.31), just five Division II punters averaging 43.0 yards or better per punt (leader is Richard Hammond of Texas A&M-Kingsville at 45.5), and just three NAIA punters averaging 43.0 yards or better per punt (leader is Mike Jones of Midland Lutheran at 45.5).

The only punter in the MIAC to average 38 or more yards per punt in each of the last three seasons, Schlieman currently has a career punting average of 40.17 (7,672 yards, 191 punts). In his career, Schlieman has 68 punts of 40-49 yards, 25 punts of 50-59 yards and seven punts of 60-plus yards. He's placed 50 punts inside the opponent 20-yard line, has forced 14 fair catches and 17 touchbacks, against just four blocked punts. Among his 25 punts this season, Schlieman has 17 punts of 40-49 yards, along with punts of 55 and 68 yards. He's placed six punts inside the 20 this year.

Schlieman is also Augsburg's primary placekicker. He has connected on 6-of-11 field goals this season, including a 46-yarder, and is 8-of-9 on extra points. He tied the school record for longest field goal with a 49-yarder in last year's season finale against St. Olaf.

SCHREIER AMONG TOP MIAC WIDE RECEIVERS: Augsburg wide receiver Ricky Schreier (Jr., Maplewood, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) is ranked among the top receivers in the MIAC. Schreier currently leads the MIAC in overall receptions per game (6.40) and is second in overall receiving yardage per game (87.0). He has caught 32 passes for 435 yards and one touchdown this season. With his 138 kick return yards added in, he also ranks fifth in the MIAC in overall all-purpose yards per game (115.4).

NEUMANN LEADING MIAC TIGHT ENDS: Augsburg tight end Andrew Neumann (Jr., Somerset, Wis.) caught four passes for 94 yards and a touchdown on Saturday at Gustavus. Neumann currently ranks sixth in the MIAC in overall receptions per game (4.80) and sixth in the MIAC in overall receiving yards per game (70.6), the best totals among conference tight ends.

AUGGIES AMONG MIAC'S DEFENSIVE LEADERS: Augsburg linebacker Mike Matson (Jr., Cedar, Minn./St. Francis HS) recorded
a career-high 18 tackles (12 solo) against Gustavus on Saturday. Matson and linebacking teammate Taylor Kroger (Sr., Cottonwood, Minn./Lakeview HS) both have 50-plus tackles this season. Matson leads the team with 57 tackles (35 solo) and ranks third in the MIAC in total tackles, while Kroger has 54 tackles (25 solo), ranking fourth in the MIAC. Kroger had 11 tackles (four solo) against Gustavus on Saturday. With three sacks in Augsburg's game against Carleton, linebacker Ross Peroutka (Sr., Faribault, Minn.) stands in seventh place among conference defenders in the category overall.

LEVESSEUR RECORDS SEVENTH 100-YARD RUSHING GAME: Augsburg quarterback Marcus LeVesseur (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./Bloomington Kennedy HS) recorded his seventh career 100-yard rushing game on Saturday at Gustavus, rushing for 115 yards on 23 carries with a touchdown. He also threw for 217 yards and two touchdowns. In his two seasons at Augsburg (13 games), LeVesseur now has 1,349 career rushing yards on 318 carries (4.24 yards per carry, 103.8 yards per game). He has also thrown for 1,968 yards (151.4 yards per game) in his collegiate career.

Augsburg's record for career rushing yardage is 2,226, set by Marty Alger from 1991-95. Just three Auggies have rushed for 2,000-plus career yards in school history. Wayne Graves (1970-73) holds the school record for career rushing attempts, with 497. Four Auggies have 400 or more career rushing attempts in school history.

SCOUTING THE AUGGIES: Augsburg dropped to 0-5 on the season with a 42-27 loss at Gustavus on Saturday. It is the first time Augsburg has started the season 0-5 since 1990. Augsburg now has a nine-game losing streak, dating to last season. Augsburg's last win came against Hamline, a 40-6 win at Hamline on Oct. 16, 2004.

Turnovers have been a major factor in Augsburg's losses this season. Augsburg has a minus-10 turnover ratio through its first five games, with 16 giveaways (10 interceptions, six fumbles lost) compared to six takeaways (two interceptions, four fumbles lost). In Saturday's 42-27 loss at Gustavus, Augsburg turned the ball over four times (three fumbles, one interception), with three of the turnovers leading to Gustavus touchdowns on the ensuing drives.

Gustavus caught a big break to start the game when Augsburg quarterback Marcus LeVesseur (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./Bloomington Kennedy HS) fumbled on his own 46. Gustavus, however, was unable to capitalize on the turnover. On Gustavus' second offensive possession, Jordan Stolp ran a quarterback sneak for a touchdown on fourth-and-inches giving the Gusties a 7-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Augsburg opened the second quarter with a big play of its own. LeVesseur found tight end Andrew Neumann (Jr., Somerset, Wis.) for a 44-yard touchdown pass to even the score at 7-7 with 11:35 left before halftime. On the ensuing possession, Gustavus compiled a six-play, 69-yard drive that ended with a 41-yard touchdown pass from Stolp to Loren Havemeier, giving the Gusties a 14-7 advantage.

The Auggies cut the Gustavus lead to 14-10 with a 46-yard field goal by Nick Schlieman (Sr., Burnsville, Minn.) at the seven-minute mark. With less than one minute remaining in the first half, the Gusties capitalized on an Augsburg fumble with a five-play, 26-yard drive capped by a five-yard touchdown pass from Stolp to Jamie Germscheid, giving the Gusties a 21-10 halftime lead.

After Stolp missed a 36-yard field goal on the Gusties' opening drive of the second half, Gustavus' Brian Evans got the ball right back for the Gusties when he made an acrobatic interception and returned it 11 yards to the Auggie 13-yard line. The Gustie offense once again converted the turnover into points, as Stolp hit Germscheid with an 8-yard touchdown pass. Stolp's PAT gave Gustavus its largest lead of the game at 28-10. Augsburg would move back into contention with a 37-yard Schlieman field goal to make the score 28-13 at the end of the third quarter.

The Auggies pulled to within eight points at 28-20 in the fourth quarter when LeVesseur scored on a two-yard TD run with 14:01 left to play. Gustavus got another big break just four minutes later, when defensive back Wade Vrieze recovered an errant LeVesseur pitch to running back Garry Ashby-Phan (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./Roosevelt HS) on the Auggie 32-yard line. Gustavus countered after the turnover when Stolp found Kerry Zajicek in the end zone from 26-yards out two plays later to extend the Gustie lead to 35-20 with 9:17 to play.

Augsburg fought back with an impressive 13-play, 80-yard drive that ended with a nine-yard touchdown pass from LeVesseur to Ashby-Phan, cutting the Gustavus lead to 35-27 with six minutes remaining. Gustavus would counter for the final time in this see-saw battle when Stolp would connect with Clint Riegelman on a 24-yard TD pass with 3:58 remaining. The Gusties would hold on for the 42-27 victory.

LeVesseur led the Auggies with three touchdowns. He compiled 115 of his 332 total yards on the ground, while Neumann led the Auggie receivers with four receptions for 94 yards and one touchdown. Mike Matson (Jr., Cedar, Minn./St. Francis HS) led Augsburg defensively with 18 tackles.

SCOUTING THE PIPERS: After opening the season with two wins -- a 24-8 win at Minnesota-Morris on Sept. 10 and a 7-3 home win over Gustavus on Sept. 17, Hamline has been outscored 95-7 in the last three weeks. Hamline was shut out 27-0 at Bethel on Sept. 24 and 44-0 at St. John's on Oct. 1, before falling 24-7 at home to Concordia-Moorhead last Saturday.

In last week's loss to Concordia, Hamline's defense forced eight Concordia turnovers, including five in the first half, but the Cobbers escaped with the 24-7 win at Klas Field. The Cobbers fumbled 10 times in the game, losing eight of them, with six coming in the first half. The Piper defense forced three fumbles inside the Hamline red zone in the first half to keep the score close.

Trailing 14-0 at the half, Hamline cut the lead in half with 5:55 left in the third quarter. After a fumble stopped a Cobber drive, Hamline went 58 yards in six plays. The drive was capped by an Andrew Seymour (So., Sandstone, Minn./East Central HS) quarterback sneak to make it 14-7. The score was set up by a 29-yard pass from Seymour to Mike LaBore (Fr., South St. Paul, Minn.) to the Cobber 1-yard line.

The Cobbers would fumble again on the ensuing possession, but the Pipers couldn't cash in. Concordia would put the game away in the fourth. On their first possession of the period, Concordia went 57 yards in nine plays for a touchdown, with a field goal added late.

Hamline was outgained in the contest 447-214, but the Cobbers had eight turnovers. The Pipers came into the game, forcing 4.5 turnovers per game -- the best in the MIAC. Seymour went 12 of 26 passing for 104 yards for Hamline. He was also intercepted twice. Jack Madryga (Fr., St. Paul, Minn./Minnehaha Academy HS) rushed for 37 yards in 15 carries. LaBore caught three passes for 57 yards. Hamline's Tyler Schultz (Sr., Rollingstone, Minn./Lewiston-Altura HS) had 11 stops on defense. He forced one fumble and recovered two others.

NEXT WEEK: Augsburg travels to St. John's for an MIAC matchup at St. John's next Saturday (10/22) at 1 p.m. at Clemens Stadium in Collegeville, Minn. Hamline will host St. Olaf in an MIAC game next Saturday at 1 p.m. at Klas Field in St. Paul, Minn.
