Women's Soccer 10/18/05 -- Augsburg 2, St. Benedict 0
BOXSCORE
ST. JOSEPH, Minn. (10/18/05) -- Scoring two goals in the second half,
Millie Suk * (Sr., Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) became Augsburg College's all-time leading women's soccer scorer, and
Maggie DeGroot (Fr., Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha West HS) claimed her sixth shutout in goal, as the Auggies claimed a 2-0 win over the College of St. Benedict in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game Tuesday afternoon at St. Benedict.
Suk scored off a penalty kick in the 58th minute, then scored on a penalty kick in the 66th minute, to help the Auggies improve to 8-1-4 overall, 5-1-2 in MIAC play and move into a tie for fourth place with St. Benedict (8-3-2 overall, 6-2-0 MIAC) in the league standings. The top four teams in the MIAC qualify for the conference's postseason playoffs.
With the two goals, Suk passed Kara Seibel (1991, 1993-95) for the Augsburg record for career points. Suk now has 91 career points (37 goals, 17 assists); Seibel accumulated 88 points (31 goals, 26 assists) in her career. Suk already holds the school's goal-scoring record (37 goals) and is tied for sixth place all-time in career assists (17).
Augsburg was outshot by a 12-5 margin -- including an 8-3 margin in the second half -- but DeGroot made eight saves to record her sixth shutout of the season in just her 13th career start in goal. She is now in sixth-place in the school's single-season goalkeeping shutout record list; the record is 9, set by Laura Hoffman in 2002 and Beth Petrik in 1997.
Both teams have nonconference games on Wednesday (10/19). Augsburg hosts Upper Midwest Athletic Conference leader St. Scholastica at 7:30 p.m. at Edor Nelson Field, while St. Benedict hosts Minnesota-Morris at 3:30 p.m.
