LAST YEAR: Quarterback Alex Kofoed threw for 219 yards and two touchdowns, leading St. John's from a second-quarter deficit with 31 unanswered points in a 38-13 victory over host Augsburg on Oct. 23, 2004 at Edor Nelson Field. Running back Mike Lofboom rushed for 116 yards and two touchdowns for the Johnnies, while Augsburg was paced by a career-high 111 rushing yards and two long touchdowns from
Jason Potts.
St. John's took an early lead on its first drive, moving 59 yards in six plays, including a 40-yard pass from Kofoed to Justin Winkels to put the ball on the Augsburg 1-yard line. Lofboom plunged for a one-yard score to put the Johnnies up 7-0. But Augsburg answered late in the second quarter to tie the game, as Potts scored his first touchdown on a 45-yard run down the sideline.
Augsburg took advantage of a miscue by the Johnnies to take its only lead of the game. A fumble on a punt return, recovered by
Ricky Schreier, put the ball on the Augsburg 44-yard line. On the next play, Potts got a last-second option pitch from quarterback
Marcus LeVesseur and sprinted 56 yards to put Augsburg ahead 13-7.
But just before halftime, St. John's took the lead on a textbook possesion drive. After a short punt gave the Johnnies the ball at the Augsburg 48 with 1:56 left in the first half, Kofoed completed six straight passes to place the ball at the Augsburg 1, and Lofboom scored his second rushing touchdown of the day with 29 seconds left, giving the Johnnies a 14-13 advantage at intermission.
The turning point of the game came on two Augsburg drives in the third quarter. On the first drive of the second half, an Augsburg fumble gave the Johnnies the ball at the Augsburg 44. Nine plays later, Brandon Keller kicked a 32-yard field goal to put the Johnnies ahead 17-13. Later in the quarter, Augsburg elected to go for it on a fourth-down-and-short play at its own 29. Quarterback LeVesseur was stopped short of the first down by defensive lineman Damien Dumonceaux, giving the Johnnies the ball with a short field. Seven plays later, St. John's extended the lead to 24-13 on a Kofoed two-yard touchdown pass to Lee Clintsman.
An interception by Tony Stefensmeier set up another Johnnie score, as Kofoed threw a four-yard scoring strike to Kyle Gearman early in the fourth quarter. A 64-yard run by James Lehner on the Johnnies' next drive put the ball at the Auggie 1, and Lehner punched it in on the next play to cap the scoring.
St. John's produced 442 yards of total offense on 87 plays, while limiting Augsburg to 287 yards on 58 plays. The Johnnies had two 100-yard rushers; Lofboom carried the ball 26 times for 111 yards and Lehner had 109 yards on 10 carries. Clintsman caught seven passes for 54 yards, while Isaac Flenner caught six passes for 49 yards.
LeVesseur threw for 104 yards, completing 8-of-15 passes, and rushed for 68 yards on 29 carries. Schreier caught three passes for 43 yards, while
Ben Bothun caught two passes for 38 yards.
Defensively, Paul Gans had 13 tackles (three solo) and a half-sack, as the Johnnie defense combined for three sacks on the day. Michael Klobes had nine tackles (four solo), and Stefensmeier had eight tackles (five solo), an interception, half-sack and two forced fumbles.

Mike Matson had 11 tackles (two solo).
Jordan Hastings had two interceptions and eight tackles (four solo).
MATSON NAMED MIAC, NATIONAL DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Augsburg linebacker
Mike Matson (Jr., Cedar, Minn./St. Francis HS) was named Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Week on defense, as well as Don Hansen's National Weekly Football Gazette Division III Co-National Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts in last week's Augsburg victory over Hamline.
For the second straight week, Matson set a career high in tackles, as he recorded 22 tackles (eight solo), along with a sack and two blocked kicks, in the victory. Matson had a sack for a 10-yard loss to stop a Hamline drive in the third quarter, blocked an extra point attempt late in the third frame, and blocked a potential game-winning 35-yard field goal in the first overtime.
Matson currently leads the team with 79 total tackles (43 solo), an overall tackle total that is second among Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference defenders (13.2 tackles per game) and seventh nationally among Division III defenders. His 15.5 tackles per game in MIAC games only is currently tops in the conference.
Don Hansen's National Weekly Football Gazette covers all levels of small-college football. Matson joined Casey McConnell of Kenyon (Ohio), Keith Snyder of Defiance (Ohio) and C.J. Villegas of McMurry (Texas) as Division III National Defensive Players of the Week. St. John's quarterback Alex Kofoed earned Co-National Offensive Player of the Week honors this week by the publication.
KROGER ALSO HAS 20-TACKLE DAY AGAINST HAMLINE: Augsburg linebacker
Taylor Kroger (Sr., Cottonwood, Minn./Lakeview HS) also recorded a career-high tackle day against Hamline, notching 20 tackles (six solo) and a half-sack. Kroger is second on the team with 74 tackles (31 solo), with an overall per-game total of 12.3 that is third among conference defenders and 15th nationally. His 12.8 tackles per game in MIAC games only is third in the league tackle rankings.
SCHLIEMAN LEADING NATION IN PUNTING: Augsburg's
Nick Schlieman (Sr., Burnsville, Minn.) now leads the nation in punting, averaging 43.9 yards per punt (overall) with 29 tries this season. In the NCAA Division III national statistics, Schlieman is now tied with Jesse Harms of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy (Conn.) in punting average (Harms has a 43.9 average on 31 punts in five games), and is the only MIAC player to lead a national statistics category in football.
Schlieman leads the MIAC in both overall (43.9) and conference games only (44.4) average. The only punter in the MIAC to average 38 or more yards per punt in each of the last three seasons, Schlieman currently has a career punting average of 40.27 (7,853 yards, 195 punts).
In his career, Schlieman has 70 punts of 40-49 yards, 26 punts of 50-59 yards and seven punts of 60-plus yards. He's placed 54 punts inside the opponent 20-yard line, has forced 14 fair catches and 17 touchbacks, against just four blocked punts. Among his 29 punts this season, Schlieman has 19 punts of 40-49 yards, along with punts of 55, 58 and 68 yards. He's placed 10 punts inside the 20 this year.
Schlieman is also Augsburg's primary placekicker. He has connected on 6-of-12 field goals this season, including a 46-yarder, and is 8-of-9 on extra points. He tied the school record for longest field goal with a 49-yarder in last year's season finale against St. Olaf.
SCHREIER AMONG TOP MIAC WIDE RECEIVERS: Augsburg wide receiver
Ricky Schreier (Jr., Maplewood, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) recorded his third 100-yard receiving game of the season, catching seven passes for 110 yards and the game-winning touchdown on the second play of the second overtime on Saturday against Hamline. Schreier leads the Auggies with 545 receiving yards on 39 receptions. His 6.50 receptions per game (overall) leads the MIAC, while his 90.8 receiving yards per game (overall) is second among conference receivers.
SCOUTING THE AUGGIES: Augsburg picked up its first win of the season, and the first win for new head coach
Frank Haege, with a 19-13, two overtime victory over Hamline on Saturday at Edor Nelson Field. The game also marked the introduction of "The Hammer," a new trophy for the Augsburg-Hamline series. Augsburg has now won nine of the last 10 games in the series with Hamline, a series the Pipers lead 40-24-2. Saturday's game was the sixth overtime game in school history for Augsburg, and the Auggies are now 3-3 in overtime games.
Ricky Schreier (Jr., Maplewood, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) caught a 27-yard touchdown pass from
Marcus LeVesseur (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./Bloomington Kennedy HS) on Augsburg's second play of the second overtime, giving the Auggies the win. Augsburg had the ball first in the first overtime, but missed a field goal attempt into the wind from 32 yards.
On Hamline's first overtime possession, a 35-yard field goal attempt was blocked by Augsburg's
Mike Matson (Jr., Cedar, Minn./St. Francis HS), his second blocked kick of the game. Hamline had the ball to start the second overtime, but missed a 30-yard field-goal attempt, setting the stage for Augsburg's game-winning touchdown pass.
Schreier recorded his third 100-yard receiving game of the season, catching seven passes for 110 yards.
Garry Ashby-Phan (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./Roosevelt HS) rushed for 73 yards on nine carries, including a 29-yard touchdown early in the fourth quarter.
LeVesseur opened the scoring for the Auggies on a 12-yard touchdown run on the second play of the second quarter, completing an eight-play, 59-yard drive. In the third quarter, Augsburg's defense stopped Hamline on a fourth-down conversion attempt at the Augsburg 23-yard line, but on the Auggies' first play of the next drive, a rush was fumbled, giving the Pipers the ball at the 33. Four plays later, Ben Dahmes scored on a three-yard rush. He gained all 33 yards on four rushes in the drive. Matson blocked the extra-point attempt, making the score 7-6 in favor of the Auggies.
Augsburg gained a short field on a short punt into the wind early in the fourth quarter, and the Auggies drove 43 yards on four plays for the go-ahead score, as Ashby-Phan, a transfer from Division II Concordia-St. Paul, notched his first touchdown as an Auggie on a 29-yard run. But an Augsburg extr-point attempt was missed. Hamline then produced the longest sustained drive of the game, a 15-play, 75-yard drive consuming 8:09, to set up the tying score on a one-yard plunge by quarterback Andrew Seymour. An Augsburg drive then stalled near midfield, and Hamline downed the ball in the final minute to force overtime.
Defensively, Matson produced a career-high 22 tackles (eight solo), including a sack and his two blocked kicks.
Taylor Kroger (Sr., Cottonwood, Minn./Lakeview HS) also had a career-high tackle day, with 20 tackles (six solo) and a half-sack.
Jordan Hastings (Sr., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) had 10 tackles (three solo), and
Jake Koelln (Sr., Rochester, Minn./John Marshall HS) and
Jim Gunderson (Sr., Hastings, Minn.) had nine tackles each.
SCOUTING THE JOHNNIES: St. John's enters this week's game with Augsburg as the No. 5-ranked team in the D3football.com, American Football Coaches Assocation and Football Gazette Division III national polls.
The Johnnies remained unbeaten with a 20-16, come-from-behind victory at Concordia-Moorhead last Saturday. Concordia entered the game unbeaten and ranked No. 13 nationally. St. John's trailed 10-0 at halftime before rallying for the win. An 11-play, 64-yard drive culminated in a Corey Weber two-yard touchdown late in the third quarter, and a touchdown pass from Alex Kofoed to Kyle German gave the Johnnies a 14-10 lead three minutes into the fourth quarter. Concordia took the lead again with 8:23 left to go, but Kofoed found German for a 74-yard score with 25 seconds left in the game to claim the victory.
St. John's was held to minus-17 rushing yards in the game, but made up for it on a 30-of-48 passing day by Kofoed for 336 yards, a performance that earned him MIAC Player of the Week on offense and Don Hansen's Football Gazette Division III Co-National Offensive Player of the Week honors. The Johnnie defense limited Concordia to just 215 yards of total offense -- 117 passing yards and 98 rushing yards.
