LAST YEAR: Concordia-Moorhead clinched a share of the MIAC football championship and the league's automatic berth into the NCAA Division III national playoffs with a 31-6 victory over visiting Augsburg on Oct. 30, 2004 at Jake Christiansen Stadium in Moorhead, Minn. Playing in a steady downpour and on a field that had been saturated by over an inch of rain from the night before, Concordia scored the first 31 points in the game and convincingly put away their first MIAC title since 1995.

Quarterback Brian Schumacher ran for two touchdowns and threw for more than 150 yards in leading Concordia to the title-clinching win. Schumacher finished the game with 67 rushing yards on 16 carries. He was 9-for-14 through the air and totaled 164 passing yards. The Cobber offense racked up 415 yards in total offense. Concordia enters this week's game with Augsburg as the No. 13-ranked team in the D3football.com Division III national poll, No. 14 in the American Football Coaches Assocation Division III national poll and No. 19 in the Football Gazette Division III national poll. Last week, St. John's was ranked No. 5 in all three major Division III national polls entering the game against Augsburg, but has now improved to No. 3 in the D3football.com national poll.

Augsburg opened the season with a 29-26 loss at Wartburg (Iowa), the defending Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference champions which entered the season ranked No. 24 by D3football.com. The Knights are now unranked, but are still 6-2 on the season and leading the IIAC. And North Central (Ill.), Augsburg's second opponent (64-25 NCC win on Sept. 17), is 7-0, leading the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin, and now ranked No. 12 by D3football.com.

After next week's game against Bethel, Augsburg will close the season against another team that could potentially be nationally ranked, depending on its next two games. St. Olaf, Augsburg's opponent in Northfield on Nov. 10, is 7-0 on the year with a game at St. John's on Saturday and at Concordia-Moorhead next Saturday.

LINEBACKERS MATSON, KROGER HAVING CAREER YEARS: Linebackers Mike Matson (Jr., Cedar, Minn./St. Francis HS) and Taylor Kroger (Sr., Cottonwood, Minn/Lakeview HS) are having career years for Augsburg. Andy Ubbelhode of St. Thomas leads the MIAC overall tackle statistics with a 14.3 tackles-per-game average.

After a 22-tackle performance in Augsburg's 19-13 overtime win over Hamline on Oct. 15, Matson was named MIAC Defensive Player of the Week and Don Hansen's National Weekly Football Gazette Division III Co-National Defensive Player of the Week.

SCHREIER AMONG TOP MIAC WIDE RECEIVERS: Augsburg wide receiver Ricky Schreier (Jr., Maplewood, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) leads the Auggies with 581 receiving yards on 42 receptions.
