Football 10/8/05 -- Gustavus 42, Augsburg 27
BOXSCORE
ST. PETER, Minn. (10/8/05) -- The Gustavus Adolphus College football team was victorious Saturday with a 42-27 win over Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game at Lloyd Hollingsworth Field.
Sophomore quarterback Jordan Stolp, who completed 20-of-38 passes for 252 yards, led the Gusties with six total touchdowns. Stolp contributed on all of Gustavus' season-high 42 points by kicking all six extra points for the Gusties. Augsburg committed four turnovers, three of which Gustavus converted into touchdowns.
With the win Saturday, Gustavus improved to 1-5 overall and 1-3 in the MIAC, while Augsburg dropped to 0-5 overall and 0-3 in the MIAC.
Gustavus caught a big break to start the game when Augsburg quarterback
Marcus LeVesseur (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./Bloomington Kennedy HS) fumbled on his own 46. Gustavus, however, was unable to capitalize on the turnover. On Gustavus' second offensive possession, Stolp ran a quarterback sneak for a touchdown on fourth-and-inches giving the Gusties a 7-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Augsburg opened the second quarter with a big play of its own. LeVesseur found tight end
Andrew Neumann (Jr., Somerset, Wis.) for a 44-yard touchdown pass to even the score at 7-7 with 11:35 left before halftime. On the ensuing possession, Gustavus compiled a six-play, 69-yard drive that ended with a 41-yard touchdown pass from Stolp to Loren Havemeier, giving the Gusties a 14-7 advantage.
The Auggies cut the Gustavus lead to 14-10 with a 46-yard field goal by
Nick Schlieman (Sr., Burnsville, Minn.) at the seven-minute mark. With less than one minute remaining in the first half, the Gusties capitalized on an Augsburg fumble with a five-play, 26-yard drive capped by a five-yard touchdown pass from Stolp to Jamie Germscheid, giving the Gusties a 21-10 halftime lead.
After Stolp missed a 36-yard field goal on the Gusties' opening drive of the second half, Gustavus' Brian Evans got the ball right back for the Gusties when he made an acrobatic interception and returned it 11 yards to the Auggie 13-yard line. The Gustie offense once again converted the turnover into points, as Stolp hit Germscheid with an 8-yard touchdown pass. Stolp's PAT gave Gustavus its largest lead of the game at 28-10. Augsburg would move back into contention with a 37-yard Schlieman field goal to make the score 28-13 at the end of the third quarter.
The Auggies pulled to within eight points at 28-20 in the fourth quarter when LeVesseur scored on a two-yard TD run with 14:01 left to play. Gustavus got another big break just four minutes later, when defensive back Wade Vrieze recovered an errant LeVesseur pitch to running back
Garry Ashby-Phan (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./Roosevelt HS) on the Auggie 32-yard line. Gustavus countered after the turnover when Stolp found Kerry Zajicek in the end zone from 26-yards out two plays later to extend the Gustie lead to 35-20 with 9:17 to play.
Augsburg fought back with an impressive 13-play, 80-yard drive that ended with a nine-yard touchdown pass from LeVesseur to Ashby-Phan, cutting the Gustavus lead to 35-27 with six minutes remaining. Gustavus would counter for the final time in this see-saw battle when Stolp would connect with Clint Riegelman on a 24-yard TD pass with 3:58 remaining. The Gusties would hold on for the 42-27 victory.
Stolp led Gustavus offensively with six total touchdowns, including five through the air, while Mitch Anderson ran 21 times for 90 yards. Zajicek led the Gustavus receiving crew with four receptions for 66 yards and one touchdown. Adam Miron and Jared Sieling led Gustavus defensively with eight tackles each.
LeVesseur led the Auggies with three touchdowns. He compiled 115 of his 332 total yards on the ground, while Neumann led the Auggie receivers with four receptions for 94 yards and one touchdown.
Mike Matson (Jr., Cedar, Minn./St. Francis HS) led Augsburg defensively with 18 tackles.
Augsburg hosts Hamline in an MIAC matchup next Saturday (10/15) at 1 p.m. at Edor Nelson Field in Minneapolis. Gustavus will have an MIAC game at St. Olaf next Saturday at 1 p.m. at Manitou Field in Northfield, Minn.

Nick Schlieman (Sr., Burnsville, Minn.) is ranked second nationally in punting (44.3 yards per punt) and 20th in field goals per game (1.0).
Ricky Schreier (Jr., Maplewood, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) is ranked 24th in receptions per game (7.0) and 37th in receiving yards per game (97.8).
Taylor Kroger (Sr., Cottonwood, Minn./Lakeview HS) is ranked 49th in total tackles per game (10.8) and tied for 15th with teammate
Ross Peroutka (Sr., Faribault, Minn.) in forced fumbles per game (0.5). For Gustavus, Jared Sieling (Sr., Watertown, Minn.) is ranked 17th nationally in total tackles per game (12.8) and 28th in solo tackles per game (6.8).
LAST YEAR: Drew Stifter claimed 141 all-purpose yards and scored two touchdowns, leading Gustavus Adolphus College to a 34-21 victory over host Augsburg College on Oct. 9, 2004 at Edor Nelson Field. Stifter rushed for 64 yards on 15 carries with touchdown scores of one and 29 yards, and caught eight passes for 77 yards.
Augsburg had a near-record running day by quarterback
Marcus LeVesseur, who rushed for 207 yards on 32 carries, just 10 yards shy of the school's single-game rushing record 217 yards by Marty Alger in a 1993 game. LeVesseur rushed for one touchdown and completed 16-of-35 passes for 153 yards and another score, but threw three interceptions, including one returned for a nine-yard touchdown in the third quarter by Gustavus' Jon Horbacz.
The teams combined for 878 yards of total offense in the game -- 466 for Augsburg, 412 for Gustavus. Gustie quarterback Jordan Stolp, making just his third collegiate start, compiled 326 yards on 24-of-36 passing with two touchdowns and one interception.
Augsburg jumped on the board first, after a Gustavus drive stalled on a fourth-down rush at the Augsburg 24-yard line. The Auggies marched 76 yards in 11 plays, with LeVesseur throwing a two-yard touchdown pass to Yarzue Slowon early in the second quarter. The Gusties scored on their next drive. After a 38-yard kickoff return by Wade Vrieze, the Gusties marched 62 yards in 10 plays, capped by a one-yard scoring rush by Stifter.
Augsburg took the lead again on its next drive, as LeVesseur scored on a one-yard plunge with 55 seconds left in the first half to complete a 15-play, 68-yard drive. LeVesseur rushed for 30 yards on nine carries in the drive. But Gustavus scored in the last minute of the first half to cut the lead to 14-13, as two long pass plays from Stolp to Kerry Zajicek, a 19-yarder and a 28-yarder for a touchdown, put the Gusties on the board again with six seconds left in the first half. The point-after-touchdown kick attempt was blocked by Augsburg's Chris Abbott, one of two PATs he blocked in the game. Zajicek caught five passes for 113 yards in the game to lead all receivers.
Augsburg opened the second half with an impressive drive, working the ball to the Gustavus 20-yard line a 12-play excursion. But Vrieze picked off a LeVesseur pass to halt the drive at the Gustie 28. On the Gusties' first play, Stolp threw a 48-yard pass to Zajicek, and after an Augsburg penalty, Stifter rushed 29 yards for a touchdown, puting the Gusties ahead for good.
The next series of plays proved to be the eventual back-breaker for the Auggies. On the ensuing kickoff, Vrieze forced an Augsburg fumble on the kickoff return, recovered by the Gusties' Drew Hood at the Auggie eight-yard line. Augsburg's defense kept the Gusties out of the end zone, and an 11-yard field goal attempt by Gustavus' Stolp sailed wide right. However, Augsburg was whistled for an offsides penalty, giving the Gusties the ball on fourth down at the Augsburg 1. A fourth-down rushing attempt was stacked up by Augsburg's Abbott and
Taylor Kroger, giving the ball to the Auggies on downs. But on the next play, a LeVesseur pass was intercepted by Horbacz, who returned it nine yards for the touchdown, giving the Gusties a 26-14 lead.
Augsburg scored on its next drive, as a 27-yard kickoff return by Slowon and a 42-yard rush by LeVesseur gave the Auggies good field position, and running back
Jason Potts scored his first collegiate touchdown on a two-yard rush with 2:55 left in the third quarter. Potts rushed for 71 yards on 10 carries in the game. The Gusties followed up the Auggie score with the final TD of the game, as a nine-play, 76-yard drive was capped by an 11-yard scoring strike from Stolp to Clint Riegelman. On a fumbled snap on the point-after kick attempt, holder A.J. Bouquet scrambled and threw a successful two-point conversion pass to Jerry Millan.
Augsburg had another chance to score on its ensuing drive, but penalties cost the Auggies dearly. The Auggies drove to the Gustavus nine-yard line, but were pushed back to the Gustie 34 on a personal-foul penalty. After an incomplete pass, the Auggies attempted a hook-and-lateral on fourth down, but could not get to the first-down marker, and turned the ball over on downs. Augsburg ended up being whistled for 14 penalties for 105 yards in the game, while Gustavus committed just five penalties for 45 yards.
Gustavus used up 4:06 of fourth-quarter time on its next drive, and despite being forced to punt, the Gusties were able to pin the Auggies deep in their own territory and force the hosts into hurry-up mode. A 14-play, 77-yard drive was stalled at the Gustie 13 on downs, and after getting the ball back on a punt with 1:33 to go, the Auggies could not advance the ball far enough, turning the ball over again on downs to end the game.
Sean Smith caught five passes for 78 yards for the Gusties, while Jamie Germscheid caught three passes for 36 yards.
Ricky Schreier led the Auggies with 68 yards receiving on six catches.
Shawn Johnson caught four passes for 44 yards.
Gustavus' defense was led by linebacker Isaac Sieling, who had 19 tackles (two solo) and a pass deflection. Chris Thorson had 12 tackles (four solo), and Jared Sieling had 11 tackles (four solo) and a tackle for loss. Karl Spilseth had a sack for the Gusties.
Jim Gunderson led Augsburg's defense with 13 tackles (three solo), while
Jordan Hastings had nine tackles (two solo) and two pass deflections. Kroger had eight tackles (one solo), including a tackle for loss.
SCHLIEMAN AMONG NATION'S PUNTING LEADERS: Augsburg's
Nick Schlieman (Sr., Burnsville, Minn.) continues to lead the MIAC in punting, averaging 44.3 yards per punt (overall) with 21 tries this season. On Saturday, Schlieman had three punts for a 50.7-yard average, including a 68-yarder that was downed at the Carleton 1-yard line just before halftime. The 68-yard punt is tied for the second-longest in school history, behind his 74-yard school record punt in a 2003 game. He also connected on field goals of 24 and 44 yards against Carleton.
Schlieman currently ranks second nationally among NCAA Division III punters in average (44.3 yards per punt). Jacob Thomas of Wittenberg (Ohio) leads the nation in punting with a 44.5 average. Schlieman and Thomas are the only Division III punters to average 44.0 yards or better per punt.
As a comparison to players in other NCAA divisions, there are only 14 Division I-A punters averaging 44.0 yards or better per punt (leader is Arizona's Danny Baugher at 49.10), five Division I-AA punters averaging 44.0 yards or better per punt (leader is Jim Hall of Southeastern Louisiana at 45.94), and just three Division II punters averaging 44.0 yards or better per punt (leader is Richard Hammond of Texas A&M-Kingsville at 46.7).
The only punter in the MIAC to average 38 or more yards per punt in each of the last three seasons, Schlieman currently has a career punting average of 40.16 (7,510 yards, 187 punts).
In his career, Schlieman has 66 punts of 40-49 yards, 25 punts of 50-59 yards and seven punts of 60-plus yards. He's placed 50 punts inside the opponent 20-yard line, has forced 14 fair catches and 17 touchbacks, against just four blocked punts. Among his 21 punts this season, Schlieman has 15 punts of 40-49 yards, along with punts of 55 and 68 yards. He's placed six punts inside the 20 this year.
SCHREIER TOPS AMONG MIAC WIDE RECEIVERS: Augsburg wide receiver
Ricky Schreier (Jr., Maplewood, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) recorded his second 100-yard receiving game of the season, catching nine passes for 122 yards against Carleton. With that performance, Schreier moved into the lead in both overall receptions per game (7.00) and overall receiving yardage per game (97.8) among MIAC receivers. He also ranks seventh in the MIAC in overall all-purpose yards per game (112.0).
NEUMANN LEADING MIAC TIGHT ENDS: Augsburg tight end
Andrew Neumann (Jr., Somerset, Wis.) caught seven passes for 86 yards against Carleton on Saturday. Neumann currently ranks fifth in the MIAC in overall receptions per game (5.00) and seventh in the MIAC in overall receiving yards per game (64.8), the best total among conference tight ends.
THREE AUGGIES AMONG MIAC'S DEFENSIVE LEADERS: Augsburg linebacker
Ross Peroutka (Sr., Faribault, Minn.) recorded three sacks against Carleton, moving him into fifth place among conference defenders in the category overall. Two Augsburg linebackers are among the top five in the MIAC in overall total tackles per game.
Taylor Kroger (Sr., Cottonwood, Minn./Lakeview HS) ranks third (10.8 tackles per game) and
Mike Matson (Jr., Cedar, Minn./St. Francis HS) ranks fourth (9.8).
SCOUTING THE AUGGIES: R.J. Jackson rushed for 79 yards on 15 carries and caught a 41-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter, while teammate Nick Brokke had two interceptions on defense, leading Carleton to a 21-19 victory over host Augsburg last Saturday afternoon at Edor Nelson Field. Carleton broke an eight-game losing streak to the Auggies. Augsburg is now 0-4 overall, 0-2 in MIAC play, the first time Augsburg has started the season 0-4 since 1990.
Carleton claimed the victory despite being outpaced in most offensive categories in the game. Augsburg outgained Carleton by a 394-194 yardage margin -- including 299 yards of passing compared to Carleton's 98 -- and had 21 first downs to Carleton's 12. Augsburg had three scoring drives of 12 plays or more, while Carleton did not have a drive longer than eight plays in the game. However, Augsburg turned the ball over five times (two fumbles, three interceptions), with two of Augsburg's turnovers leading to Carleton scores on the ensuing drives. Carleton did not have a turnover in the contest, though it gave up the ball twice on downs (once on a fake punt running attempt).
Carleton built a 14-0 lead early in the second quarter, but Augsburg trimmed the lead to 14-12 early in the third quarter, taking advantage of two field goals by
Nick Schlieman (Sr., Burnsville, Minn.) and a four-yard touchdown run by quarterback
Keith Hagen (Jr., Northfield, Minn.). However, Jackson's 41-yard reception from Knight quarterback John Hollowed with 1:59 left in the third quarter, three plays after Brokke's 49-yard return on his second interception of the game, gave the Knights an advantage they would not relinquish the rest of the way.
Augsburg scored midway through the fourth quarter, as a
Steve Houser (Sr., Zimmerman, Minn./Elk River HS) one-yard scoring run capped a 17-play, 78-yard drive covering 8:01. The Auggie defense shut down Carleton on its next drive, stopping a rush on 4th-and-1 from the Augsburg 28-yard line. But on Augsburg's next drive, a turnover on a fumble ended the threat at the Augsburg 41 with 4:56 remaining. Carleton was able to chop 3:56 off the clock before missing a field goal with 1:00 left, but Augsburg turned the ball over on downs on its final drive of the game.
Schlieman connected on field goals of 24 and 44 yards for the Auggies, and had three punts for a 50.7-yard average, including a 68-yarder that was downed at the Carleton 1-yard line just before halftime. The 68-yard punt is tied for the second-longest in school history, behind Schlieman's 74-yard school-record punt in a 2003 game. Schlieman also had a 21-yard pass completion on a fake punt attempt in the second quarter.
Hagen completed 24-of-39 passes for 278 yards for the Auggies, but was intercepted three times.
Ricky Schreier (Jr., Maplewood, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) caught nine passes for 122 yards, his second 100-yard receiving game of the season.
Andrew Neumann (Jr., Somerset, Wis.) caught seven passes for 86 yards.
Garry Ashby-Phan (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./Roosevelt HS) rushed 12 times for 51 yards and caught four passes for 44 yards.
Defensively,
Ross Peroutka (Sr., Faribault, Minn.) recorded three sacks for the Auggies and forced a fumble, while
Taylor Kroger (Sr., Cottonwood, Minn./Lakeview HS) had 14 tackles (three solo) and
Brandon Rudenick (So., Nicollet, Minn.) had nine tackles (two solo) and a sack.
Mike Matson (Jr., Cedar, Minn./St. Francis HS) had eight tackles (two solo), and
Jake Koelln (Sr., Rochester, Minn./John Marshall HS) had seven tackles (one solo).
SCOUTING THE GUSTIES: Gustavus, like Augsburg, is still in search of its first victory of the season, an unfamiliar position for head coach Jay Schoenebeck's Gusties. The Gusties finished in the top four in the MIAC standings six seasons in a row, until finishing 2-8 overall, 2-6 in MIAC play last season. Last week, Gustavus was shut out by Concordia-Moorhead, 30-0 -- the first time Gustavus has been held scoreless since a 7-0 loss to Bethel on Oct. 21, 1995, a span of 97 games over nine seasons.
Full Gustavus notes for this weeks game are online: http://www.gustavus.edu/oncampus/athletics/news.cfm?view=fb&id=1605.
GUSTIE HOMECOMING AGAINST THE AUGGIES: This is the seventh time Augsburg has been the opponent for Gustavus on its Homecoming day, according to the Gustavus game notes. The Gusties are 5-1 in previous Homecoming games against the Auggies, with the last meeting a 28-7 Gustie win in 2003. All-time in 80 previous Homecoming games, Gustavus is 57-21-2.
NEXT WEEK: Augsburg hosts Hamline in an MIAC matchup next Saturday (10/15) at 1 p.m. at Edor Nelson Field in Minneapolis. Gustavus will have an MIAC game at St. Olaf next Saturday at 1 p.m. at Manitou Field in Northfield, Minn.
