MINNEAPOLIS (11/19/05) -- Augsburg opened the season strong on Saturday, as seven Auggie wrestlers earned or shared individual weight-class titles at the season-opening event, the annual Auggie-Brute-Adidas Open at Si Melby Hall. No team scores were kept at the open meet, which attracted more than 200 wrestlers from 13 colleges.
At 133,
Zach Hansen (Fr., Albert Lea, Minn.) made his Augsburg debut with four victories to earn the 133-pound Gold title. At 141,
Josh Hansen (Jr., Albert Lea, Minn.) and
Ben Moss (Jr., Council Bluffs, Iowa/Lewis Central HS) shared the Gold division title, with Hansen recording a pin and technical fall and Moss recording a fall.
At 157,
Jeremy Anderson (So., Thief River Falls, Minn.), a transfer from Division I Minnesota, made his Augsburg debut with four wins to earn the Gold title. He beat James Meland of Jamestown (N.D.), the No. 7-ranked wrestler in the NAIA national rankings, 7-0 in the semifinals, then topped Brad Bishop of Loras (Iowa), the No. 8-ranked wrestler nationally in Division III, 10-6 in the title match. Jacob Roberts (Fr., Jordan, Minn./Scott West) went 4-0, with two major decisions and a technical fall, to win the 157 Silver title.
Robbie Gotreau (So., Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) went 4-0 to claim the 184 Gold title. In the finals, Gotreau beat Mitch Hager of Loras (Iowa), the No. 7-ranked wrestler in Division III, 4-3 to claim the title.
Wally O'Connor (So., Oshkosh, Wis./Oshkosh West HS) shared the 197 Gold title with three victories, including a 7-4 win over Dan Fiecke of St. John's, the No. 5-ranked wrestler in Division III, in the semifinals.
At 165, top-ranked
Ryan Valek * (Sr., Belle Plaine, Minn./Scott West) won his first three matches before falling 9-5 to Matt Nagel, a University of Minnesota wrestler competing unattached in the meet, in the championship match.
Seth Flodeen (Fr., Cannon Falls, Minn.) went 3-1 to place second in the 125 Gold division, with his lone loss coming to top-ranked Terry Morgan of Loras (Iowa). Heavyweight
Andrew Neumann (Jr., Somerset, Wis.) placed second in the Gold division.
Kirk Rall (Sr., West St. Paul, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) and
George Lynaugh (So., Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley HS) shared third-place honors at 174 Gold.
Dylan Soberg (Sr., Elbow Lake, Minn./West Central Area HS) placed fourth at heavyweight, as did
Brian Barbiaux (Fr., Luxemburg, Wis./Luxemburg-Casco HS) at 125 Gold.
Jared Evans (Jr., Blue Earth, Minn./Blue Earth Area HS), ranked No. 4 nationally at 149, rebounded from an early upset to go 3-1 to finish fifth in the Gold division.
Also placing fifth in Gold divisions for Augsburg were
Paul Bjorkstrand (Fr., Burnsville, Minn.) at 133 and
Mitch Collins (So., Richland Center, Wis.) at 157. Placing sixth was
Zak Jensen (Sr., Hopkins, Minn.) at heavyweight.
