Football 11/4/05 -- Bethel 17, Augsburg 14
BOXSCORE
MINNEAPOLIS (11/4/05) -- Phil Porta (Jr., Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge Isanti HS) rushed 44 times for a school-record 289 yards, scoring a touchdown to help his Bethel University football team to a 17-14 victory over host Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference football game Friday afternoon at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome.
Porta led a Bethel attack that accumulated 375 rushing yards and 494 yards of total offense on 91 plays, as the Royals improved to 5-4 overall, 4-3 in MIAC play. The Royals held Augsburg to just 213 yards of total offense on 56 plays, including just 49 yards on the ground. Bethel controlled the ball for 37:21, compared to just 22:39 for Augsburg.
Augsburg, paced by career-highs of 28 tackles (nine solo) by linebacker
Mike Matson (Jr., Cedar, Minn./St. Francis HS) and 22 tackles (four solo) by linebacker
Taylor Kroger (Sr., Cottonwood, Minn./Lakeview HS), dropped to 1-8 overall, 1-6 in MIAC play.
Augsburg had a chance to tie or win the game in the closing minutes, as Matson forced a fumble on a quarterback rush by Ben Wetzell (So., Wells, Minn./United South Central HS) at the Augsburg 1-yard line, which Kroger recovered in the end zone, forcing a touchback with 2:31 left.
But two plays later, an Augsburg pass was intercepted by Bethel's Jon Evans (Jr., Johnston, Iowa) at the Augsburg 35-yard line with 2:20 left, the second of his two interceptions on the day. Bethel ran out the clock to record the victory, its eighth straight win over Augsburg in the all-time series (Bethel now leads 15-13-3).
Porta broke his own single-game school record for rushing yardage. He had a 264-yard rushing day against Carleton last season. His 44 carries fell two short of the Royals' single-game record for rushing attempts, 46 by Mike Johnson in a 2002 game against Gustavus. He now has a school-record 3,985 rushing yards in his three seasons, including 3,150 yards in games against MIAC opponents.
Porta led the Royals on their initial drive of the game, rushing six times for 43 yards as part of a 13-play, 60-yard drive. He scored on a one-yard rush to give the Royals a 7-0 lead.
Augsburg cut into the lead early in the second quarter, as a seven-play, 76-yard drive was capped by the first of two touchdowns from quarterback
David Lange (So., Minnetonka, Minn./Hopkins HS) to
Ricky Schreier (Jr., Maplewood, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS), a 36-yarder. The extra point was blocked by Zach Danielson (Jr., Bettendorf, Iowa/Martin County (Fla.) HS).
After a 31-yard field goal by Jason Holmertz (So., Rockford, Ill./Rockford Christian HS) to open the third quarter, the Royals took a 17-6 lead on the final play of the period, as Wetzell completed a 10-yard scoring strike to Kyle Lee (Fr., Burnsville, Minn.).
On its next drive, Augsburg was halted at its own 38-yard line, but a fumble on a Bethel punt-return attempt was recovered by the Auggies'
Royce Winford (Fr., Albertville, Minn./Osseo HS) at the Bethel 26-yard line, and five plays later, Lange connected with Schreier on a three-yard touchdown. A two-point conversion pass from Lange to Winford trimmed the Bethel advantage to 17-14.
Bethel's next drive ended with a missed field-goal attempt, but Augsburg couldn't convert on its next drive, setting the stage for the end-of-game drama. Bethel ran a 10-play, 66-yard drive, taking 3:36 off the clock -- with Porta rushing seven times for 42 yards -- before the final run and fumble at the Augsburg 1-yard line was recovered in the end zone by the Auggies.
In addition to Porta's 289 rushing yards, Ross Muellenberg (Jr., Maple Grove, Minn.) had 44 yards on five carries, and Wetzell rushed 10 times for 38 yards. Wetzel completed 11-of-23 passes for 94 yards, including four passes to Lee for 65 yards.
Augsburg's Lange completed 18-of-32 passes for 164 yards and two scores, but was intercepted twice. Schreier had four catches for 60 yards, and
Andrew Neumann (Jr., Somerset, Wis.) had six catches for 62 yards.
Jason Potts (So., Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) rushed nine times for 27 yards.
Jim Gunderson (Sr., Hastings, Minn.) and
Brandon Rudenick (So., Nicollet, Minn.) had 14 tackles apiece for the Auggies, with Gunderson recording an interception.
Jake Koelln (Sr., Rochester, Minn./John Marshall HS) had 10 tackles for Augsburg.
Bethel was led defensively by Kirby Carr (Jr., Fergus Falls, Minn.), who had 16 tackles (six solo) and a sack. Jake Schneider (Sr., Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley HS) had seven tackles and two quarterback hurries.
Both teams close their seasons next Saturday (11/12) at 1 p.m. with MIAC contests, as Augsburg plays at St. Olaf and Bethel plays at Gustavus.

For Augsburg individuals,
Nick Schlieman (Sr., Burnsville, Minn.) is ranked sixth nationally in punting (42.1 yards per punt) and 46th in field goals per game (0.8).
Mike Matson (Jr., Cedar, Minn./St. Francis HS) is ranked fourth in total tackles per game (14.3) and 14th in solo tackles per game (6.6).
Taylor Kroger (Sr., Cottonwood, Minn./Lakeview HS) is ranked 13th in total tackles per game (12.3).

LAST YEAR: Bethel used a balanced scoring attack and timely defensive and special team plays to beat visiting Augsburg 24-10 on Nov. 6, 2004 at Royal Stadium in Arden Hills, Minn.
Leading the way for the Royals was running back Phil Porta, who rushed for 174 yards on the ground with a touchdown. Porta broke the single season rushing record at Bethel in the first half eclipsing Mike Johnson's 2001 record of 1,462. Porta finished the season with 1,736 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns.
The difference in the game, however, were the four interceptions and special teams play by Bethel. Twice Bethel faked punt attemps, once for a 30 yard recption to Kirby Carr down to the 1-yard line and then a 50-yard touchdown reception to Brandon Carr late in the third quarter to give the Royals the lead at 14-10.
Bethel opened the scoring with a nine-yard run by receiver Zach Ludvigson. Augsburg answered with a 47-yard field goal and a 39-yard scoring strike from quarterback
Marcus LeVesseur to Ricky Schreider to put the Auggies ahead at half 10-7. Bethel added a 22-yard field goal by Ludvigson and a touchdown by Porta in the fourth quarter to seal the victory.
AUGSBURG AT THE METRODOME FOR 16TH STRAIGHT YEAR: Because the air-supported dome is already in place over Edor Nelson Field, Augsburg will "host" Bethel on Friday (11/4) at 3 p.m. at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis.
The game will mark the 16th season in a row that Augsburg has played a football game at the Metrodome. Augsburg will be making its 19th football appearance at the Metrodome this season since 1983, the most of any Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference school. This will be the third time Augsburg and Bethel have met in the Metrodome. The teams faced each other indoors in the 1996 (Bethel won 53-18) and 1997 (Augsburg won 56-22) seasons.
The Auggies have a 7-11 record in games played at the Metrodome and an 8-11 record all-time in games played indoors. Augsburg also won an NCAA Division III playoff game over Concordia-Moorhead at the Fargodome in Fargo, N.D., in 1997.
TURNOVERS HAVE BEEN ACHILLES HEEL FOR AUGGIES: Turnovers continue to plague the Auggies this season. Through eight games, Augsburg has a minus-18 turnover ratio, with 26 giveaways (17 interceptions, nine fumbles) against eight takeaways (four interceptions, four fumbles). In the last five games, Augsburg has turned the ball over 19 times, against just two takeaways. Against Concordia last week, Augsburg was intercepted twice, with each turnover leading to Cobber touchdowns on the ensuing drives.
SCHLIEMAN AMONG NATION'S LEADERS IN PUNTING: Augsburg's
Nick Schlieman (Sr., Burnsville, Minn.) had six punts for a 37.3-yard average against Concordia. So far this season, he is averaging 42.1 yards per punt (overall) with 44 tries this season, currently ranked sixth in the Division III national rankings in the punting category. Currently, Hunter Hamrick of Mary Hardin-Baylor (Texas) is ranked No. 1 nationally with a 44.1 average (25 punts). There are six punters in Division III with averages of 42.0 or better.
The only punter in the MIAC to average 38 or more yards per punt in each of the last three seasons, Schlieman currently has a career punting average of 40.2 (8,433 yards, 210 punts). In his career, Schlieman has 76 punts of 40-49 yards, 26 punts of 50-59 yards and seven punts of 60-plus yards. He's placed 57 punts inside the opponent 20-yard line, has forced 14 fair catches and 18 touchbacks, against just four blocked punts. Among his 38 punts this season, Schlieman has 25 punts of 40-49 yards, along with punts of 55, 58 and 68 yards. He's placed 13 punts inside the 20 this year.
Schlieman is also Augsburg's primary placekicker. He has connected on 6-of-12 field goals this season, including a 46-yarder, and is 9-of-10 on extra points. He tied the school record for longest field goal with a 49-yarder in last year's season finale against St. Olaf.
LINEBACKERS MATSON, KROGER HAVING CAREER YEARS: Augsburg linebacker
Mike Matson (Jr., Cedar, Minn./St. Francis HS) matched a career-high set earlier this year with 22 tackles (six solo) and a half-sack in the loss to Concordia. Matson now has 114 tackles (53 solo), a total that is tops among MIAC defenders overall, and a tackle-per-game average of 14.2 that is second-best in the league and fourth-best nationally. Meanwhile, Auggie linebacker teammate
Taylor Kroger (Sr., Cottonwood, Minn/Lakeview HS), who has 98 tackles (39 solo) on the season, is third in the MIAC in overall tackles per game (12.2).
After his first 22-tackle performance of the season, in Augsburg's 19-13 overtime win over Hamline on Oct. 15, Matson was named MIAC Defensive Player of the Week and Don Hansen's National Weekly Football Gazette Division III Co-National Defensive Player of the Week.
LANGE-TO-SCHREIER WORKS TWICE FOR TDs ON SATURDAY: Augsburg quarterback
David Lange (So., Minnetonka, Minn./Hopkins HS) made his first collegiate start on Saturday against Concordia, completing 14-of-30 passes for 173 yards. He threw two second-quarter touchdown passes to wide receiver
Ricky Schreier (Jr., Maplewood, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS), including a 71-yarder with 5:55 left in the half. So far this season, Schreier ranks second in the MIAC in overall receptions per game (5.5) and third in oveall receiving yards per game (82.2). He also ranks fifth in the MIAC in overall all-purpose yards per game (127.6).
AUGSBURG'S TOUGH SCHEDULE IN 2005: This season, Augsburg has faced four teams that have been ranked nationally at least once during this season. Concordia-Moorhead, which beat Augsburg 48-14 on Saturday, was ranked No. 13 in the D3football.com Division III national poll entering the game and is now ranked No. 12. St. John's was ranked No. 5 in all three major Division III national polls entering its 56-16 win over Augsburg on Oct. 22, but has since improved to No. 3 in the D3football.com national poll.
Augsburg opened the season with a 29-26 loss at Wartburg (Iowa), the defending Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference champions which entered the season ranked No. 24 by D3football.com. The Knights are now unranked, but are still 6-2 on the season and tied for first place in the IIAC. And North Central (Ill.), Augsburg's second opponent (64-25 NCC win on Sept. 17), is 8-0, leading the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin, and now ranked No. 11 by D3football.com.
SCOUTING THE AUGGIES: Concordia College-Moorhead poured out 576 yards of total offense and dominated in a 48-14 win over Augsburg last Saturday afternoon at Augsburg's Edor Nelson Field.
Concordia produced 372 rushing yards and 204 passing yards, while limiting Augsburg to just 217 yards of total offense, including just 34 net yards of rushing. Concordia dominated possession, with 38:53 time of possession on 84 plays, while Augsburg had just 49 offensive plays for 21:07 time of posssession. Concordia scored the first 28 points of the contest and led 41-14 at halftime, scoring touchdowns on its first six drives of the game.
Concordia quarterback Brian Schumacher completed 11-of-17 passes for 180 yards and had 12 rushes for 92 yards and a four-yard score just 4:18 into the game. On the next drive, Ben Aakre intercepted a pass and rushed 34 yards to the Augsburg 5-yard line, and Cory Johnson scored on a 5-yard rush on the next play. A nine-play, 75-yard drive ended on a 4-yard touchdown run by Ben Thoreson, and the first quarter was capped on a seven-play, 85 yard drive and a 13-yard scoring run by Johnson, giving the Cobbers a 28-0 first-quarter lead.
Augsburg wide receiver
Ricky Schreier scored both times he caught the football on offense in the second quarter, hauling in a six-yard touchdown pass from quarterback
David Lange early in the quarter to cap a 13-play, 83-yard drive, and scoring on a 71-yard reception from Lange with 5:55 left in the frame. Lange, who made his first collegiate start at quarterback for the Auggies, completed 14-of-30 passes for 173 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions.

Concordia's final score came midway through the third quarter, as a 10-play, 70-yard drive was completed on a two-yard run by Williamson.
For Augsburg,
Andrew Neumann (Jr., Somerset, Wis.) caught seven passes for 64 yards, and Schreier had two receptions for 77 yards.
Defensively, Augsburg linebacker
Mike Matson (Jr., Cedar, Minn./St. Francis HS) matched a season high set earlier this year with 22 tackles (six solo) and a half-sack.
Jordan Hastings (Sr., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) had 14 tackles (six solo) and an interception, and
Taylor Kroger (Sr., Cottonwood, Minn./Lakeview HS) had 13 tackles (three solo) and a half-sack.
Andy Matzke (Sr., Faribault, Minn.) had nine tackles (four solo) and
Ross Peroutka (Sr., Faribault, Minn.) had eight tackles (one solo).
SCOUTING THE ROYALS: Bethel enters Saturday's game with a 4-4 overall record, 3-3 in MIAC play. The Royals have been driven this year on the legs of running back Phil Porta (Jr., Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti HS), who leads the MIAC in rushing with 1,116 yards (139.5 yards per game with eight touchdowns. He is ranked 10th nationally in rushing in the Division III national rankings. Throw in his 51 receiving yards this season, and his 1,167 all-purpose yards accounts for 36 percent of Bethel's total offense (3,238 yards) this season.
Last Saturday, the Royals claimed a 41-0 win in their home finale against Carleton. Quarterback Ben Wetzell (So., Wells, Minn./United South Central HS) completed 17 of 22 passes for 257 yards and four touchdowns, all to different receivers. Porta rushed for 141 yards and a touchdown, part of a 343-yard rushing afternoon by the Royals. Bethel compiled 623 yards of total offense against the Knights. Kyle Lee (Fr., Burnsville, Minn.) had five catches for 85 yards and a touchdown, while Nate Porter (So., Woodbury, Minn.) had four catches for 81 yards and a TD.
Bethel notes from MIAC's weekly notebook:
Sophomore quarterback Ben Wetzell (Wells, Minn.) played his best game of the season as he led the Royals' offense, completing 17 of 22 passes (77.3 completion percentage) for 257 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions in a little less than three-quarters of play against Carleton. His four touchdowns were to four different receivers as he hit a total of seven different receivers on the day. Wetzell made some big plays as he had completions of 34, 55, and 68 yards respectively. Wetzell also carried the ball seven times racking up 33 rushing yards.
Defensive end Jake Schneider (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) was a key component in a Bethel defense that held Carleton to only 1.8 yards per carry and 152-yards of total offense in the Royals win. Throughout the game, Schneider was in the Carleton backfield as he finished with 0.5 sacks and four TFL for minus-10 yards. He also finished the afternoon with a total of seven tackles and a pass break-up. Schneider currently leads Bethel with 14 TFL for 41 yards and is second in sacks with 4.0 for 20 yards.
Sophomore receiver Nate Porter (Woodbury, Minn.), who is the grandson of legendary St. Olaf coach Tom Porter, had his best day as a Royal as he caught four passes for 81 yards, including a 68-yard touchdown reception in the win over Carleton Saturday.
Phil Porta (Cambridge, Minn.) ran for 141 yards and a touchdown Saturday, which now gives him 3,696 career rushing yards. Porta set the Bethel All-time rushing record against Concordia when he ran for 186 yards against a Cobber run defense that had averaged giving up only 55.7 ypg. Porta has 2,861 career MIAC rushing yards and needs 1,092 yards in his final 10 conference games to set the MIAC record. He continues to lead the MIAC in rushing as he has rushed for 1,116 yards and eight rushing touchdowns.
The Carr brothers, Kirby and Brandon (Fergus Falls, Minn), continue to power the defensive attack for the Royals. Kirby leads Bethel with 76 tackles along with one sack, three TFL, one punt block, a PAT block, two PAT returns for scores and two interceptions while Brandon is second with 56 tackles, one TFL, 0.5 sacks, one pass break-up and two interceptions.
A.J. Parnell, a senior wide receiver, (Kirkland, Wash.), was named as a Semi-Finalist for the Draddy Trophy, known in many circles as the "Academic" Heisman. This comes after both Parnell and fellow MIAC player Ben Kessler from St. Thomas were named to the 2005 AFCA Good Works Team. This is the first time a Bethel player has been up for the Draddy Trophy and the second year in a row a player has been named to the Good Works Team, as Matt Wassink was given the honor last year. The Royals are second in the nation with four honorees for the AFCA Good Works Team since its inception eight years ago, second only to MIAC rival St. Thomas.
NEXT WEEK: Augsburg closes the 2005 season next Saturday (11/12) at 1 p.m. at Manitou Field in Northfield, Minn. Bethel closes its season with a game at Gustavus next Saturday at 1 p.m. at Hollingsworth Field in St. Peter, Minn.
