MINNEAPOLIS (2/19/05) -- Top-ranked Augsburg College won eight individual titles and qualified all 10 of its wrestlers to the upcoming NCAA Division III national championship tournament, sweeping through the field to win its third straight NCAA Division III Great Lakes Regional tournament, held Saturday at Augsburg's Si Melby Hall.

Augsburg, winners of eight of the last 14 Division III national titles and national runners-up the last two years, has won the Great Lakes Regional each of the three seasons it has participated in the event. In the last three years, Augsburg has won 22 of the 30 individual titles contested at the regional.

The Division III national tournament will be held March 4-5 at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn.

Augsburg's four top-ranked and defending national champion wrestlers remained unbeaten in claiming individual regional crowns. Marcus LeVesseur * improved to 36-0 and ran his consecutive-match winning streak to 120 straight matches with four wins, including two pins, at 157 pounds; Matt Shankey improved to 21-0 with a pin and two technical-fall victories at 125 pounds; Mark Matzek * improved to 30-0 with a technical fall and two seven-point victories at 133; and Joe Moon * improved to 12-0 at 174, claiming two pins, a technical fall and major decision among his four victories.

At 197, Augsburg's Justin Sorensen claimed one of the biggest upsets of the regional, knocking off No. 2-ranked Dan Fiecke of St. John's 6-4 in the finals. Sorensen is ranked No. 3 at 197 and improves to 26-9 on the season; the loss was Fiecke's first of the season against 21 wins. Both qualified for the national meet.

Augsburg's two second-ranked wrestlers also claimed titles -- 141-pounder Jamell Tidwell * improved to 31-4 on the season with four wins, including a technical fall, and 184-pounder Brad Tupa moved to 26-5 on the season with two first-period pins and a technical fall among his four victories. No. 3-ranked Ryan Valek won his title at 165 with two pins and a major-decision among his four wins, moving to 31-6 overall.

Augsburg's two No. 4-ranked wrestlers suffered losses but still qualified as wild-card entrants to the national tournament. Jared Evans lost to Ryan McMurray of Augustana (Ill.) in the 149-pound finals, while Mark Simmonds lost in the heavyweight semifinals to eventual champion Sean Barnes of Chicago (Ill.), but rallied to win a "true-second" match to earn his second national bid.

Elmhurst (Ill.), ranked No. 10 nationally as a team, had a solid showing, qualifying four individuals as wild cards -- 141-pounder and No. 5-ranked David Silva, 157-pounder and No. 4-ranked Rick Lamas, 165-pounder and No. 4-ranked Tyler Ludwig at 165 and 184-pounder and No. 7-ranked Matt Sassolino. Silva and Sassolino both won "true-second" matches in order to ensure their national tournament berths.

St. John's (Minn.) qualified two individuals -- Fiecke at 197 and 157-pounder Jacob Malone. Augustana (Ill.) also qualified two individuals -- champion McMurray (34-16) at 149 and 165-pounder Brian Daly (37-9). Daly is ranked No. 7 nationally.

Qualifying one wrestler each are: the University of Chicago (champion Barnes at heavyweight, 30-8); Pacific (Ore., 174-pounder Mick Davis); and North Central (Ill., 184-pounder Ryan Aldrich, 35-7).
