MINNEAPOLIS (3/12/05) -- Shawn Burcum (Jr., DeForest, Wis.) went 3-for-4 with two doubles in the first game, and Ricky Martinez (Fr., Beach Park, Ill./Zion Benton HS) went 3-for-3 with a run-scoring double in the second game, leading Edgewood College (Wis.) to a doubleheader sweep of Augsburg College in nonconference baseball action late Saturday night at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome.
Edgewood pulled away from an early tie to claim an 8-4 win in the first game, then took advantage of five Augsburg errors in the second game for a 5-2 win in the second game. Edgewood is now 3-1 overall; Augsburg is now 1-3 overall.
Nick Wilz (Jr., Appleton, Wis./East HS) went 2-for-4 with two RBI in the first game for the Eagles, while Derek Jew (So., Homewood, Ill./Homewood Flossmor HS) had a two-run triple and drove in three runs overall.
Edgewood jumped on the board early in the first game, on a run-scoring single by Wilz and a fielder's choice by Jew. But Augsburg matched the Eagles in the bottom of the frame, as
Darren Ginther (Jr., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) hit a run-scoring triple to center field and eventually came in on a bases-loaded walk. Ginther ended up going 2-for-3 with two runs scored to lead the Auggies.
The Eagles took the lead for good in the fifth, as back-to-back doubles by Burcum and Wilz drove in two runs. Edgewood drove in four runs in the seventh inning, as Burcum hit another run-scoring double, Jew had a two-run triple and John Fish (Jr., Wisconsin Dells, Wis.) hit a run-scoring sacrifice fly.
Augsburg loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh and scored in a bases-loaded walk and sacrifice fly by
Matt Johnson (So., Plymouth, Minn./Osseo HS), but two groundouts prevented any more runs from scoring. Augsburg ended up stranding 10 runners in the game.
Andrew Handorf (Jr., DeForest, Wis.) pitched four innings for the Eagles, striking out four, to earn the win, with Jeff Potts (Jr., Kirkland, Wash./Cedar Park Christian HS) pitching three innings of relief for the save.
Jeremy Nelson (Sr., Maplewood, Minn./Roseville HS) stared the first game for Augsburg, pitching two innings. Three Auggies pitched in relief, with
Josh Remme (Jr., Faribault, Minn.) being charged with the loss.
Edgewood took advantage of five Augsburg errors to take the win in the second game. Four of the five runs charged against Auggie pitchers were unearned.
Two runs came across in Edgewood's half of the second inning, on a wild pitch and throwing error. Another run came across in the fourth, as Martinez hit a run-scoring single. Two more runs came across in the fifth, as two runs came across on a Burcum single and Augsburg fielding error.
Augsburg scored twice in the top of the seventh, but again left the bases loaded in its final at-bat with the potential game-winning run at the plate.With two outs, Johnny Rivers (So., New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Cooper HS) singled and eventually scored on a Schreier single and Edgewood error.
Ricky Schreier (Jr., St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) then scored on a single by Ginther, but a flyout ended the game.
Schreier went 3-for-4 to lead the Auggies, while Ginther went 2-for-4. Martinez went 3-for-3 for the Eagles.
Chris Cushmore (Jr., Edina, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret HS) started and pitched two innings for the Auggies, striking out four.
Eric Grant (Jr., Coon Rapids, Minn.) and
Tyler Kraft (So., Savage, Minn./Burnsville HS) pitched in relief.
Ryan Halliburton (So., Dewey, Ariz./Bradshaw Mountain HS) pitched four innings for the Eagles, striking out five to score the win. Three Eagles pitched in relief, with Jew earning the save in the seventh.
Augsburg returns to action on March 20-25 with action in the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic in Fort Myers, Fla. Augsburg opens its week in Florida with a doubleheader against Fontbonne (Mo.) on March 20 at 4 p.m. Edgewood returns to action next Thursday (3/17) at 3 p.m. at Hanover (Ind.).
