Augsburg opens Florida trip with sweep of Fontbonne (Mo.), winning 2-1 and 21-10!

FORT MYERS, Fla. (3/20/05) -- Darren Ginther (Jr., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) pitched a complete-game victory in the first game, then drove in four runs on a double and triple in the second game, leading Augsburg College to a doubleheader sweep of Fontbonne University (Mo.) in its opening games at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic baseball tournament at Terry Park.

Augsburg won the first game 2-1, then pounded Fontbonne 20-10 in the second game, improving to 3-3 on the season. Fontbonne is now 1-8.

Ginther allowed just five hits and a first-inning run in his complete-game pitching effort in the first game, striking out two while not walking a batter. Augsburg managed just four hits in the first game, all singles, but scored single runs in the fourth and sixth innings.

Ginther and Taylor Pagel (Sr., Cannon Falls, Minn.) scored for Augsburg in the first game, with Pagel contributing an RBI. Pagel, Ginther, Ricky Schreier (Jr., St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) and Matt Johnson (So., Plymouth, Minn./Osseo HS) had Augsburg's hits.

A 10-run seventh inning gave Augsburg a comfortable lead in the second game, as the Auggies pounded out 17 hits in the game. Every starter in the Auggie lineup had at least one hit, every starter also contributed at least one RBI, and every starter scored at least two runs each in the game.

Ginther went 2-for-4 for the Auggies with four RBI, hitting a double and triple. Johnson went 3-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored, while Jeff Stomberg (Fr., Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) went 3-for-6 with three runs scored. Troy Deden (Jr., Northfield, Minn.) went 2-for-6 with a triple and two runs scored, and Pagel, Andrew Werner (Fr., Vermillion, Minn./Hastings HS) and Mike Zaun (Fr., Mendota Heights, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) all had doubles. Brian Bambenek (So., St. Charles, Minn.) scored four runs in the game.

Eric Weber (So., Hastings, Minn.) started and allowed just two hits in 2.2 innings of work, with Tyler Kraft (So., Savage, Minn./Burnsville HS) picking up the pitching win in relief, pitching 2.1 innings and striking out four. Eric Grant (Jr., Coon Rapids, Minn.) pitched two innings of relief, striking out one.

Augsburg faces Mount Vernon Nazarene (Ohio) in a doubleheader on Monday (3/21) at 4 p.m. in Fort Myers.
