FORT MYERS, Fla. (3/21/05) -- Relief pitcher
Tyler Kraft (So., Savage, Minn./Burnsville HS) picked up the pitching win in the first game and scored a save in the second game, and Augsburg College hitters scored four triples in the doubleheader, as the Auggies swept Mt. Vernon Nazarene University (Ohio) in two games at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic baseball tournament at Terry Park.
Augsburg claimed a 3-2, nine-inning win in the first game and a 2-1 win in the second game to improve to 5-3 on the season, extending its winning streak to four straight games. Mt. Vernon Nazarene is now 2-3 on the year.
Kraft relieved starter
Jeremy Nelson (Sr., Maplewood, Minn./Roseville HS) with the game tied at 1-1 in the seventh inning and pitched three innings of relief, striking out one while allowing just three hits. He then relieved Augsburg starter
Chris Cushmore (Jr., Edina, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret HS) in the second game, allowing just two hits in three innings to score the save. Kraft has pitched in three straight games in two days for the Auggies.
Nelson pitched six innings for the Auggies in the first game, striking out one while allowing one walk, five hits and an unearned run in the fifth inning of the first game. Meanwhile, Cushmore struck out six while allowing on walks, four hits and an unearned run in four innings of work the second game.
Augsburg scored a run in the first inning of the first game, and went to extra innings tied at 1-1. Both teams scored in the eighth inning, and Augsburg scored the go-ahead run in the ninth.
Troy Deden (Jr., Northfield, Minn.) had a double and drove in two runs for the Auggies, also scoring a run.
Tim Wahl (So., Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) and
Andrew Werner (Fr., Vermillion, Minn./Hastings HS) had triples for the Auggies. Werner went 2-for-3 with an RBI, while
Matt Johnson (So., Plymouth, Minn./Osseo HS) went 2-for-4.
Darren Ginther (Jr., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) scored twice in the first game.
Mt. Vernon Nazarene scored an unearned run in the third inning of the second game, but Augsburg used a two-run triple by Johnson in the fourth inning to score all the runs it would need. Ginther and Pagel scored for the Auggies.
In addition to Johnson's triple, Ginther also had a triple, and
Ricky Schreier (Jr., St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) and
Jeff Stomberg (Fr., Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) had the other Auggie hits.
Augsburg faces Lawrence (Wis.) in a doubleheader on Tuesday (3/22) at 4 p.m. in Fort Myers.
