FORT MYERS, Fla. (3/22/05) --
Troy Deden (Jr., Northfield, Minn.) hit a three-run triple in the fourth-inning to provide the go-ahead runs for Augsburg College in the second game, and
Matt Johnson (So., Plymouth, Minn./Osseo HS) went 4-for-7 at the plate in the doubleheader, as Augsburg split with Lawrence University (Wis.) on Tuesday at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic baseball tournament at Terry Park.
Lawrence scored six runs in the first three innings to claim a 6-2 win in the first game, breaking a four-game Augsburg winning streak, while Augsburg scored an 8-3 win in the second game. Augsburg is now 6-4 on the season, while Lawrence is now 3-3.
Augsburg was limited to six hits in the first game, and scored its lone runs in the third inning, as
Ricky Schreier (Jr., St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) hit a two-run double, scoring
Tim Wahl (So., Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) and
John Rivers (So., New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Cooper HS). Johnson went 2-for-3 with a double for the Auggies.
Andrew Werner (Fr., Vermillion, Minn./Hastings HS), making his collegiate pitching debut, allowed six hits in 2.2 innings to take the loss. Five of the six runs against him were earned.
Josh Remme (Jr., Faribault, Minn.) pitched in relief, striking out one and allowing just one hit in 3.1 innings of work.
Deden's two-out, bases-loaded triple in the fourth inning of the second game broke a 2-2 tie and gave the Auggies the lead for good. Augsburg added three more runs in the fifth inning, with an RBI fielder's choice by
Mike Zaun (Fr., Mendota Heights, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) and a run-scoring single by
Jeff Stomberg (Fr., Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS). Run-scoring singles by Johnson and
Brian Bambenek (So., St. Charles, Minn.) provided the Auggie runs in the first and second innings.
Stomberg and Johnson went 2-for-4 for the Auggies in the second game, while
Ben House (Fr., Racine, Wis./Washington Park HS) and Bambenek scored twice each.
Eric Grant (Jr., Coon Rapids, Minn.) pitched five innings to earn the win for the Auggies, striking out four while walking one and allowing just four hits.
Chris Schroeder (So., Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Washington HS) pitched two innings of relief, striking out two while not allowing a hit.
Augsburg returns to Gene Cusic Classic action in Fort Myers on Thursday (3/24) with two nine-inning games, against Luther (Iowa) at 12 p.m. and Carroll (Wis.) at 6 p.m.
