FORT MYERS, Fla. (3/24/05) --
Darren Ginther (Jr., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) went 4-for-5 for Augsburg College in the first game, and went 2-for-3 with three RBI and three runs scored in the second game, as Augsburg split two nine-inning games on Thursday at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic baseball tournament at Terry Park.
In the first game, Augsburg dropped a 10-6 decision to Luther College (Iowa, 6-1), and in the second game, Augsburg scored a 14-5 victory over Carroll College (Wis., 3-5). Augsburg is now 7-5 on the season.
Ginther had a double and drove in a run in the first game against Luther, as Augsburg pounded out 16 hits. However, the Auggies stranded nine runners on base in the game.
Ginther pitched the first five innings for the Auggies, striking out one while allowing three runs and five hits. A three-run homer, as part of a six-run seventh inning against reliever
Josh Remme (Jr., Faribault, Minn.), provided the eventual winning runs for the Norse.
Tyler Kraft (So., Savage, Minn./Burnsville HS) struck out two in 2.2 innings of relief to wrap up the game for the Auggies.
Mike Zaun (Fr., Mendota Heights, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) went 3-for-4 for the Auggies against Luther, while
Troy Deden (Jr., Northfield, Minn.) and
Matt Johnson (So., Plymouth, Minn./Osseo HS) had two hits each.
Taylor Pagel (Sr., Cannon Falls, Minn.) hit a solo home run for the Auggies, the first round-tripper for the Auggies this season.
Augsburg built a 12-0 lead after six innings against Carroll en route to the easy win in the second game.
Adam Johnson (So., Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) pitched six shutout innings to earn the win, striking out four while not walking a batter and allowing six hits.
Aaron Dahl (So., Cottonwood, Minn./Lakeview HS) and
Andy Scott (So., West Fargo, N.D.) pitched in relief for the Auggies.
Deden went 2-for-4 for the Auggies with a double and triple, driving in three runs. Ginther also went 2-for-4 with a triple, driving in three runs while scoring three runs.
Andrew Werner (Fr., Vermillion, Minn./Hastings HS) went 2-for-4 with a triple, driving in a run and scoring one, and Pagel went 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI.
Augsburg finishes its week of games at the Gene Cusic Classic in Fort Myers on Friday (3/25) at 9 a.m. with a doubleheader against Washington & Jefferson (Pa.).
