FORT MYERS, Fla. (3/25/05) --
Troy Deden (Jr., Northfield, Minn.) went 5-for-6 at the plate in the doubleheader and drove in four runs, leading Augsburg College in its final action at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic baseball tournament, splitting a doubleheader with Washington & Jefferson College (Pa.) on Friday at Terry Park.
Augsburg won the first game 7-1, but lost the second game 5-4. Augsburg, now 8-6 on the season, went 7-3 in its 10 games in Florida. Washington & Jefferson is now 5-4 on the season.
Deden, who went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI in the first game and 3-for-3 with an RBI in the second game, ended up hitting .412 in Florida with 14 hits, 15 RBI, six extra-base hits (three doubles, three triples) and a .676 slugging percentage.
Darren Ginther (Jr., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS), who went 3-for-6 with two runs scored and four RBI in Friday's doubleheader, also went .412 at the plate in Florida, with 12 RBI, 11 runs scored, six extra-base hits (three doubles, three triples) and a .676 slugging percentage.
Matt Johnson (So., Plymouth, Minn./Osseo HS), who had two hits and an RBI on Friday, led the way at the plate for the Auggies in Florida, batting .469 (15-of-32) with nine RBI and a .562 slugging percentage.
Jeremy Nelson (Sr., Maplewood, Minn./Roseville HS) pitched a complete-game victory in the first game against Washington & Jefferson, striking out six while allowing just five hits, no walks and a single run.
Meanwhile, Augsburg scored all its runs in the third and fourth innings. Ginther, Deden and Johnson had run-scoring singles for the Auggies in the third inning, and Deden added a two-run double in the fourth, with run-scoring singles also coming from
Ricky Schreier (Jr., St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) and
Jeff Stomberg (Fr., Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS).
Augsburg fell behind 5-0 after four innings in the second game, but rallied with four runs in the top of the seventh. A three-run double by Ginther and a run-scoring single by Deden plated the runs for the Auggies in the frame, but a pickoff ended the game with the potential tying run on base. Ginther went 2-for-3 for the Auggies in the game.
Eric Grant (Jr., Coon Rapids, Minn.) pitched three innings and was charged with the loss.
Josh Remme (Jr., Faribault, Minn.), making his fifth relief appearance of the season and third on the Florida trip, pitched two innings, and
Tyler Kraft (So., Savage, Minn./Burnsville, Minn.), making his seventh relief appearance of the season and fifth in the 10 games in Florida, pitched the sixth inning for the Auggies.
Augsburg opens Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play with a doubleheader against St. Olaf on Saturday (4/2) at 1 p.m. at Parade Stadium in Minneapolis.
