LA CROSSE, Wis. (4/14/05) --
Troy Deden (Jr., Northfield, Minn.) went 3-for-6 with a run scored and an RBI in the doubleheader, and
Andrew Werner (Fr., Vermillion, Minn./Hastings HS) picked up his first collegiate pitching victory with a complete-game five-hitter in the second game, as Augsburg College split a nonconference baseball doubleheader with Hamline University on Thursday at the Viterbo Outdoor Athletic Complex.
Viterbo won the first game 6-3, while Augsburg claimed the second game 3-1. Augsburg is now 13-11 overall, while Viterbo drops to 15-17. Augsburg has split its last seven doubleheaders in a row, including all four of its doubleheaders so far in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play.
Werner struck out five while walking just one and allowing an unearned run in the third inning of the second game to score his first victory in his second pitching appearance. He is now 1-1 on the season.
Augsburg took the second game victory with a three-run fourth inning.
Darren Ginther (Jr., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) led off the inning with his fourth double of the season, moved to third on a single by Deden, and later scored on a passed ball. An RBI single by
Ben House (Fr., Racine, Wis./Washington Park HS) plated Deden, and House scored on a single by
John Rivers (So., New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Cooper HS).
Werner then allowed only two Viterbo hits the rest of the way to score the pitching win.
Viterbo built a 5-1 lead after four innings to score the first-game victory. Augsburg managed single runs in the first, fifth and sixth innings, but stranded eight runners on base in the game.
An
Aaron Hazen (So., Burnsville, Minn.) single in the first inning drove in
Jeff Stomberg (Fr., Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS), a single by Deden plated Stomberg in the fifth inning, and a groundout by
Brian Bambenek (So., St. Charles, Minn.) plated Hazen in the sixth.
Augsburg used three pitchers in the second game, with
Aaron Dahl (So., Cottonwood, Minn./Lakeview HS) taking the loss, pitching 3.1 innings and giving up four runs.
Chris Schroeder (So., Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Washington HS) and
Tyler Kraft (So., Savage, Minn./Burnsville, Minn.) pitched in relief.
Augsburg returns to MIAC play with a doubleheader at Gustavus on Saturday (4/16) at 1 p.m.
