Augsburg splits with Bethel in MIAC action, winning 6-5 in 8 innings in first game, dropping 4-1 decision in second game.

ARDEN HILLS, Minn. (4/6/05) -- Taylor Pagel (Sr., Cannon Falls, Minn.) hit a solo home run in the eighth inning to provide the eventual game-winning run for Augsburg College in the first game, while T.J. Therrien went 2-for-3 with two RBI for Bethel College in the second game, as the teams split a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at Bethel's Hargis Park.

Andrew Werner (Fr., Vermillion, Minn./Hastings HS) went 3-for-4 for the Auggies with a three-run home run in the first game, as Augsburg won 6-5 in eight innings. Bethel scored a 4-1 win in the second game.

Augsburg is now 10-8 overall, 2-2 in MIAC play, while Bethel is now 9-8 overall, 2-2 in MIAC play.

Trailing 1-0 in the fourth inning of the first game, Augsburg tied the game on a run-scoring single by Jeff Stomberg (Fr., Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS), and Werner followed with a three-run homer.

Bethel cut the lead on a two-run single by Dan Villas in the fourth inning, then took the lead back on a two-run homer by Kirby Carr in the fifth. Augsburg tied the game on a run-scoring single by Stomberg in the sixth inning, setting up the extra-inning heroics for Pagel.

Darren Ginther (Jr., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) started the first game and struck out four while waking one in four innings of work. Tyler Kraft (So., Savage, Minn./Burnsville HS), making his ninth relief appearance of the season, picked up the victory, pitching four innings while striking out two. Ryan Mahoney, pitching three innings of relief for the Royals, took the loss.

John Sugihara struck out three Auggies while allowing just six hits and a run in five innings of work to score the win in the second game for the Royals, with Luke Ludvigson pitching two innings of scoreless action for the save.

Bethel scored single runs in the second, fourth, fifth and sixth innings to score the win. Therrien drove in two runs, while Zach Ludvigson hit a solo home run and Travis Wermedal brought home a run on a base hit.

Augsburg's lone run came in the fifth inning, when Stomberg hit a double to drive in Ricky Schreier (Jr., St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS). Augsburg stranded 10 runners on base in the game.

Pitcher Jeremy Nelson (Sr., Maplewood, Minn./Roseville HS) struck out five in five innings of work for the Auggies. Josh Remme (Jr., Faribault, Minn.) and Eric Grant (Jr., Coon Rapids, Minn.) pitched in relief.

Augsburg returns to MIAC action on Saturday (2/9) at 1 p.m. with a home doubleheader against St. John's at Parade Stadium. Bethel has a nonconference doubleheader at Simpson (Iowa) on Saturday at 12 p.m.
