Football 9/17/05 -- North Central (Ill.) 64, Augsburg 25

BOXSCORE

MINNEAPOLIS (9/17/05) -- Kam Kniss (Jr., Lanark, Ill./Eastland HS) completed 22-of-32 passes for 418 yards and three touchdowns, leading his North Central College (Ill.) squad to a single-game school-record 657 yards of total offense and a 64-25 win over host Augsburg College (Minn.) in a nonconference football game Saturday afternoon at Edor Nelson Field.

Kniss also rushed for 43 yards on nine carries and a touchdown, as North Central improved to 2-0 on the season. North Central scored its most points in a single game since putting up 86 points in an 86-0 win over Elmhurst (Ill.) in 1958. Meanwhile, Augsburg, now 0-2 on the season, gave up its most points in a single game since a 67-7 loss to Gustavus on Oct. 6, 1984.

North Central scored the first 21 points of the game and poured out 405 yards of total offense in the first half, including 320 yards of passing by Kniss. The Cardinals led 27-13 at halftime, then continued to build on the lead in the second half, outscoring the Auggies 37-12 down the stretch.

Kniss broke the North Central career record for pass completions in Saturday's game. In addition to his 340 career completions, he also holds school records for career passing yards (4,963) and touchdowns (35), and is second in career pass attempts (588).

North Central running back Steve Holden (Sr., Chicago, Ill./Dunbar HS) rushed for 98 yards on 21 carries and two touchdowns, setting a new school record for career scoring. He now has 158 career points, breaking the old mark of 150. Wide receiver Tyke Spencer (Sr., Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central HS) also set a new school record for the Cardinals, breaking the career reception mark with five catches for 97 yards and two touchdowns (one receiving, one rushing). His record is now 95 career receptions, breaking the old school mark of 90.

North Central had seven drives of 60 yards or more in the game, including five touchdown drives that were 79 yards or more.

Meanwhile, Augsburg put up 338 yards of total offense in the game, including 200 yards of passing and three touchdowns by Marcus LeVesseur (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./Bloomington Kennedy HS). He also rushed for 77 yards on 18 carries and a touchdown. Ricky Schreier (Jr., Maplewood, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) caught four passes for 85 yards, while Andrew Neumann (Jr., Somerset, Wis.) caught seven passes for 68 yards and a touchdown.

Spencer scored the first two touchdowns of the day for the Cardinals, on a 14-yard run late in the first quarter and on a 55-yard pass from Kniss on the first play of the second quarter. Chuck Earnest (Sr., Carol Stream, Ill./Glenbard North HS) scored on a 7-yard pass from Kniss to give the Cardinals a 21-0 lead with 4:38 left in the first half.

But Augsburg scored twice in a 63-second span to make the game close in the final two minutes of the first half. Neumann scored on a 17-yard pass from LeVesseur, and after getting the ball back, a 34-yard pass from LeVesseur to Schreier set up a 16-yard completion from LeVesseur to Josh Starr (So., Cedar, Minn./St. Francis HS), Starr's first collegiate touchdown.

But North Central capped the half on a four-play, 88-yard drive, including a 56-yard pass from Kniss to Eric Stuedemann (Jr., Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew HS), to score with 22 seconds left in the half, on a 15-yard completion from Kniss to Tyler Didier (Sr., Dixon, Ill.).

The teams traded touchdowns early in the third quarter, on a 14-yard rush by Kniss for the Cardinals and De Hanuman's (Jr., Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy HS) first career touchdown reception for Augsburg, and North Central expanded its lead on a five-yard scamper by Holden late in the first quarter.

Augsburg again cut into the lead early in the fourth quarter, as LeVesseur scored on a one-yard plunge. But on the two-point attempt, the pass was intercepted and lateraled to Adam Pennington (So., Sandwich, Ill.), who scored a rare two-point "defensive extra point" for North Central on a return to the end zone.

The Cardinals then scored three more touchdowns in the fourth quarter, on a one-yard run by Holden, a 10-yard run by Alex Duplessis (So., Galena, Ill.) and a 20-yard run by Israel Brown (So., Normal, Ill./Community HS).

Stuedemann led the Cardinals with 153 receiving yards on six catches, while Earnest had five catches for 81 yards and Didier had five catches for 70 yards. Duplessis had six carries for 55 yards, while Kniss rushed nine times for 43 yards.

Defensively, Lenny Radtke (Sr., Carol Stream, Ill./Glenbard North HS) had 10 tackles (one solo), while Pennington had seven tackles (four solo), as did Mike Tenerelli (Sr., Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard South HS). Anthony Imbordino (So., Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield Central HS) had six tackles (four solo) and a sack. Pennington and Ben Hare (Sr., Marengo, Ill.) each had interceptions for the Cardinals.

The Augsburg defense was led by Jordan Hastings (Sr., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS), who had 11 tackles (five solo). Jim Gunderson (Sr., Hastings, Minn.) had eight tackles (two solo), and Taylor Kroger (Sr., Cottonwood, Minn./Lakeview HS) and Mike Matson (Jr., Cedar, Minn./St. Francis HS) had seven tackles each.

Augsburg opens Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play with a game at St. Thomas next Saturday (9/24) at 1 p.m., at O'Shaughnessy Stadium in St. Paul, Minn. North Central faces Washington (Mo.) in a nonconference game next Saturday at 7 p.m. in St. Louis, Mo.

SERIES: This is the second meeting between Augsburg and North Central, and the second time Augsburg has faced a team from the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin in the school's 74 seasons of football. Last season, North Central beat Augsburg 31-24 in Naperville, Ill. This is also the fourth-ever game against a team from the state of Illinois; Augsburg faced Illinois College in a nonconference game on Sept. 10, 1988, losing 20-13. Augsburg hosted Illinois College the following year, falling 10-0.

LAST WEEK: Augsburg dropped its season-opening game, falling 29-26 at Wartburg (Iowa) on Saturday. North Central opened its season last week with a 44-27 win over crosstown rival Benedictine (Ill.).

LAST YEAR: Steve Holden rushed 33 times for 260 yards and two touchdowns, becoming North Central University's all-time leading ground-gainer, as the Cardinals rallied from an 18-7 deficit to surpass visiting Augsburg 31-24 on Sept. 18, 2004 at Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium in Naperville, Ill.

North Central used a nine-play, 80-yard, 4:28 drive to take its final lead of the game, culminated with a Sam Fullerton two-yard run with 1:53 remaining in the fourth quarter. Augsburg had a chance to tie the game, as the Auggies converted two fourth-down plays with passes from quarterback Tony George to tight end Andrew Neumann. Augsburg reached the North Central 36-yard line, but with 15 seconds left, George fumbled on the snap exchange, and North Central's Anthony Imbordino recovered to effectively end the game.

The game was a tale of two halves, as Augsburg built an 18-7 first-half lead before North Central rallied in the second half, outscoring the Auggies 24-6 down the stretch. After Augsburg held a time-of-possession advantage in the first half of 18:15 to 11:45 (with 42 offensive plays to North Central's 32), the Cardinals turned things around in the second half. North Central had 43 plays to Augsburg's 30 in the second half, and held the ball for 20:32 to Augsburg's 9:28. North Central outgained Augsburg by a 286-127 margin in the second half, putting together a total of 488 yards of offense in the game to Augsburg's 251. Augsburg had just five net rushing yards in the game, compared to North Central's 339.

A 71-yard opening kickoff return by Marcus LeVesseur set up Augsburg's first score, a 29-yard field goal by Nick Schlieman. A 25-yard Holden touchdown on the next drive gave the Cardinals the lead, but Augsburg took the lead back with two first-half scores. After a sack by Joe Cullen ended a North Central drive, platoon quarterback LeVesseur drove the Auggies 36 yards on eight plays for the go-ahead score, throwing his first collegiate touchdown pass on a 14-yard strike to Shawn Johnson.

Ricky Schreier claimed two interceptions in the second quarter, his second leading to an Auggie score. His 39-yard return gave the Auggies the ball at the North Central 4-yard line, George threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Ben Bothun, giving the Auggies an 18-7 advantage. North Central closed the first half on a 24-yard field goal by Mike Augustine, completing a seven-play, 81-yard drive.

An 11-play, 54-yard drive to open the second half resulted in a missed 33-yard field goal by Augustine, as Cullen picked up another key sack to force the Cardinals to try the field goal. However, Augsburg could not convert and was forced to punt. The Cardinals drove on the subsequent drive for a score, as Holden rushed for 39 of North Central's 55 yards on the drive, capped off with a five-yard scoring run. Augsburg again went 3-and-out, and North Central scored on the subsequent drive again, driving 48 yards on five plays, capped with a 10-yard scoring pass from Kam Kniss to Tyke Spencer.

Augsburg gained its last score on a 65-yard pass from LeVesseur to Johnson, as the receiver broke free from the defense and sprinted for the score with 19 seconds left in the third quarter. Augsburg only got the ball three more times in the fourth quarter, ending with two punts and the game-closing fumble.

Kniss threw for 149 yards on 12-of-19 passing for the Cardinals. Fullback Matt Edgcomb rushed for 75 yards on 12 carries, and Spencer caught four passes for 71 yards.

For Augsburg, George threw for 119 yards on 10-of-23 passing, while LeVesseur threw for 127 yards on 9-of-18 passing. Johsnon had a career-best 120 receiving yards on four carries, while Newman caught four passes for 41 yards, Bothun caught five passes for 38 yards and Yarzue Slowon caught five passes for 37 yards. Steve Houser rushed for 44 yards on 13 carries.

Defensively, Jake Koelln had 10 tackles (six solo), including two sacks for a loss of 15 yards. Jordan Hastings had nine tackles (five solo), with John Golnitz adding nine tackles (two solo) and Cullen contributing eight (seven solo), including two sacks and four tackles for loss.

Ben Hare and Lenny Radtke led the Cardinals with 10 tackles each (seven solo each), with Hare contributing four sacks. Mike Tenerelli had seven tackles (five solo).

FOURTH STRAIGHT SEASON WITH TWO REGULAR-SEASON NONCONFERENCE GAMES: With Macalester having dropped its MIAC affiliation for football for a five-year span, Augsburg has to play two nonconference games in its 10-game regular-season schedule. After Carleton joined the MIAC in 1983 to give the conference 10 football schools, Augsburg played nine conference games from 1983 to 2001, with the exception of 1991, when a game against Gustavus was cancelled due to the infamous Halloween blizzard.

Last season, Augsburg went 0-2 in nonconference games, falling 27-24 against Wartburg (Iowa) and 31-24 at North Central (Ill.). In 2003, Augsburg was 1-1 in nonconference games, topping Jamestown (N.D.) 20-19 before falling to Wisconsin-Eau Claire 52-20. In 2002, Augsburg also went 1-1 in nonconference games, topping Dakota State (S.D.) 44-14 and losing to Wisconsin-Eau Claire (37-13).

Prior to 2002, Augsburg's last regular-season schedule with two nonconference games was 1983, when Augsburg defeated Buena Vista (Iowa) 29-24 on Sept. 3 and lost to Bemidji State 23-7 at the Metrodome on Nov. 20. That season, Augsburg went 4-7, the only year that Augsburg has had an 11-game regular season. Augsburg played three nonconference games in its MIAC championship season of 1997 (10-2), with its regular season win at Valley City State (N.D., 24-20 on Sept. 6) and two games in the NCAA Division III national playoffs (34-22 win over Concordia-Moorhead at the Fargodome on Nov. 15 and 61-21 loss at Simpson (Iowa) on Nov. 22.).

MARCUS LEVESSEUR NAMED MIAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Augsburg quarterback Marcus LeVesseur (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./Bloomington Kennedy HS) was named Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Week on offense, it was announced on Monday.

In Saturday's season-opening 29-26 loss at Wartburg (Iowa), LeVesseur accounted for 378 of Augsburg's 404 yards of total offense. He moved from his starting wide receiver spot to quarterback after the first series and completed 24-of-35 passes for 242 yards, a touchdown and interception, while rushing for 136 yards on 22 carries with two touchdowns.

An All-MIAC selection in his first season of collegiate football in 2004, LeVesseur broke Augsburg's single-season rushing records for yardage (1,024), carries (256) and rushing touchdowns (10). He became just the second Auggie ever to rush for more than 1,000 yards in a season and just the third Auggie to accumulate more than 200 carries in a season. Overall, LeVesseur led the MIAC in total offense in both conference (267.4 yards per game) and overall (233.0 ypg) play in 2004.

He now has 1,160 career rushing yards in his 11 games at Augsburg; the school's career rushing yardage record is 2,226 yards, set by Marty Alger from 1991-95.

As a wrestler, LeVesseur has won three straight NCAA Division III wrestling national titles at 157 pounds while compiling a 124-0 collegiate record. LeVesseur, who has yet to lose a collegiate wrestling match, has the second-longest career unbeaten streak in college wrestling history, behind the 159-0 record of Iowa State's Cael Sanderson (1998-2002).

AUGGIES FALL IN ANOTHER CLOSE GAME AGAINST WARTBURG: For the second straight season, the Augsburg College-Wartburg College football battle came down to a field-goal attempt. Last season, Wartburg connected on a field goal with no time remaining on the clock to clinch a 27-24 victory at Augsburg. This season, an Augsburg field goal miss as time expired secured Wartburg's 29-26 victory over the Auggies on Saturday night at Wartburg's Walston-Hoover Stadium.

With 2:26 remaining and no time outs at its disposal, Augsburg drove the ball 53 yards to set up for a potential game-tying, 44-yard field goal attempt by Nick Schlieman (Sr., Burnsville, Minn.). But the attempt went wide left as the clock ran out.

The game was the first of the season for Augsburg and marked the collegiate head-coaching debut of Augsburg's Frank Haege. The teams combined for 829 yards of total offense -- 404 for Augsburg, 425 for Wartburg.

The game also marked a surprise change in the Auggie lineup. Marcus LeVesseur (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./Bloomington Kennedy HS), last season's starting quarterback who was slated to be a starting wide receiver this season, replaced starting signal-caller David Lange (So., Minnetonka, Minn./Hopkins HS) after the first series of the game.

LeVesseur, who set Augsburg single-season school records for rushing attempts, yardage and touchdowns last season, rushed for 136 yards on 22 carries and two touchdowns on Saturday, while completing 24-of-35 passes for 242 yards, a touchdown and an interception.

Wartburg opened the scoring on its first drive, as quarterback Reed Hoskins (Sr., Grinnell, Iowa) and Kyle Duchman (So., Cedar Falls, Iowa) combined for a 66-yard scoring pass just 1:56 into the game. Augsburg answered the score late in the quarter, as LeVesseur ran the ball in from four yards out, but a 51-yard kickoff return by Josh Van Rees set up Wartburg's next score, a 20-yard pass from Hoskins to Duchman.

Augsburg scored on its defense midway through the second quarter, after a Schlieman punt was downed at the Wartburg 1-yard line. A screen pass from the end zone was stopped by defenders Jake Koelln (Sr., Rochester, Minn./John Marshall HS) and Taylor Kroger (Sr., Cottonwood, Minn./Lakeview HS), who pinned the Wartburg receiver in the end zone for a safety, cutting the Wartburg advantage to 13-9.

The Auggies got the ball back on a free kick, and LeVesseur completed three straight passes, to Ricky Schreier (Jr., Maplewood, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) and Andrew Neumann (Jr., Somerset, Wis.), setting up his second rushing TD of the game, a five-yard run to give the visitors a 16-13 advantage with 4:21 left in the half.

A long drive brought Wartburg to the doorstep of the end zone, but Augsburg's defense held firm at its own 1-yard line, holding for three plays before Spencer Herzberg (Fr., Iowa Falls, Iowa) hit a 20-yard field goal, knotting the game at 16-16 at the half.

Augsburg opened the second half with a score, capping a nine-play, 58-yard drive with a 35-yard field goal by Schlieman. But the Knights answered with a long drive of their own, a 10-play, 71-yard drive capped by a 10-yard Hoskins pass to Brandon Vinzant (Jr., Nevada, Iowa).

The Knights extended their lead to 10 points with a Ben Thomsen (Sr., Royal, Iowa) 1-yard touchdown run on the first play of the fourth quarter. But Augsburg trimmed the lead to six points on the next drive, capping a nine-play, 79-yard journey with a seven-yard pass from LeVesseur to Steve Houser (Sr., Zimmerman, Minn./Elk River HS).

Wartburg got the ball inside the Augsburg 10-yard line on its final drive, but Augsburg's Neumann blocked a 29-yard field goal attempt by Herzberg, setting the stage for the near-heroics by the Auggies.

Schreier caught 12 passes for 131 yards for the Auggies, while Neumann caught three passes for 54 yards. Garry Ashby-Phan (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./Roosevelt HS) rushed for 21 yards and caught four passes for 17 yards.

Defensively, Kroger led Augsburg with 16 tackles (12 solo), while Mike Matson (Jr., Cedar, Minn./St. Francis HS) and Chike Ochiagha (Sr., Savage, Minn./Holy Angels HS) had 10 tackles apiece. Andy Matzke (Sr., Faribault, Minn.) had an interception for the Auggies.

SCOUTING THE AUGGIES: A new era of Augsburg College football is beginning this season, and the architect of this new era hopes that it will result in new success for the Auggies. Frank Haege was hired as the 14th head coach in the 74-season history of Augsburg football in January, replacing Jack Osberg, who retired after 14 seasons at the helm and a school-record 62 wins (62-79).

Haege's goals for his Auggies are simple: Become a force to be reckoned with in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

"Our vision is to become a consistent contender in the conference," Haege said. "We're looking forward to building the program. This season, we want to come out of the gate and win some games, which would be a great stepping stone and a great recruiting tool. It's a 'building' thing. We will spend a lot of time in the weight room to build us up, we want to get alumni involved to build great relationships, and we want to build on our traditions."

Last season, Augsburg finished 2-8 overall, 2-6 in the MIAC. Putting the 2-8 record in perspective, however, Augsburg lost four of its eight games by a touchdown or less, with two losses decided on the final play and two others decided in the last two minutes of regulation.

Seventeen starters and 36 letterwinners return from last season, and will be the cornerstone of an Auggie program which will undergo significant changes on both offense and defense.

"We have a solid group of seniors and letterwinners returning," said Haege, who welcomes 18 seniors this season. "We should have some solid senior leadership, and the opportunity for everyone to compete. It's nice to have a big group of seniors in our first year back in the program."

SCOUTING THE CARDINALS (from North Central's online season preview): North Central had, truly, a record-breaking year in 2004. But 2005 is shaping up as potentially the best ever in the College's football history.

The team returns eight starters on offense as well as defense, including three All-Americans and six all-conference players. In 2004, the group broke a 24-year losing streak to Augustana College (Ill.) with a dominant 31-10 victory and went 6-0 at Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium to finish with a final record of 7-3 overall and 4-3 in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW). If one or two plays that went against the Cardinals had gone the other way, the team might have had even more to chirp about.

"We've got the potential to be extremely good," said head coach John Thorne, entering his fourth year at the helm. "We've got so many guys with experience, and at the skill positions everyone is returning."

CARDINALS TOP CROSSTOWN RIVAL: (from North Central's online game story): Ranked No. 11 in Division III by Don Hansen's Football Gazette, North Central College kicked off the season with a 44-27 drubbing of crosstown rival Benedictine University (Ill.) last Saturday at North Central.

The Cardinal offense picked up right where it left off in 2004, racking up 564 yards of total offense (395 passing, 169 rushing). And the dynamic trio of quarterback Kam Kniss (Jr., Lanark, Ill./Eastland HS), running back Steve Holden (Sr., Chicago, Ill./Dunbar HS) and receiver Tyke Spencer (Sr., Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central HS) continued to impress with yet even more record-breaking performances.

Kniss completed 20 of 29 passes on the night for 386 yards and four TDs. That brought his career passing yardage total to 4,545 to break the previous mark of 4,211 held by Luther Selbo '67. Kniss also tied the single-game mark for TDs thrown in a game (also held by four other players) and the career mark for completions with 318 (also held by Selbo).

Spencer caught nine passes for 228 yards and three TDs on the night to bring his career totals to 90 receptions and 1,534 yards in only 11 total games. The 1,534 yards broke the previous mark of 1,480 held by his older brother Brad Spencer '04, while the 90 catches tied Spencer '04 and Jeremy Gudauskas '99. The three TDs caught was the second time Tyke accomplished that feat, tying two other players.

Kniss put the Cardinals on the board on the team's second drive of the night by scrambling 55 yards to paydirt. A Ben Aguilar (Sr., Woodridge, Ill./Benet HS) PAT gave North Central a 7-0 lead. A 29-yard field goal by Aguilar on the Cardinals' ensuing drive increased the lead to 10-0 and the game appeared well in hand at the end of the first quarter.

However, the Eagles came to life in the second quarter behind 5- and 2-yard TD runs by Brian Berry that made the score 17-14 with 4:19 before the half. The Cardinals had earlier gone ahead 17-7 on a Kniss-to-Spencer touchdown of 25 yards. Right before the half, Kniss led a 12-play, 69-yard drive that culminated with a 6-yard TD pass to Spencer to make it 24-14 at the break.

On North Central's first drive of the second half, the Cardinals needed only three plays to score as Kniss and Spencer connected on a 40-yard touchdown strike. Although Aguilar's PAT attempt failed, the score was 30-14 and the rout was on. Kniss later found Chuck Earnest (Sr., Carol Stream, Ill./Glenbard North) for a 32-yard TD, and Holden had a 4-yard run to paydirt.

In addition to Spencer's receiving totals, Earnest caught four balls for 85 yards and Tyler Didier (Sr., Dixon, Ill./Dixon HS) three for 42. Holden totaled 102 yards on 17 carries for the night.

Defensively, Lenny Radtke (Sr., Carol Stream, Ill./Glenbard North HS) led the team in tackles with 13 including three for a loss of 15 yards, three passes defended and one sack for a loss of 9 yards. Tim Bellazzini (Jr., Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton Warrenville South HS) had seven tackles and Ben Hare (Sr., Marengo, Ill./Marengo) six. Hare also had two tackles for a loss of 13 yards and one sack for a loss of 8 yards.

NEXT WEEK: Augsburg opens Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play with a game at St. Thomas next Saturday (9/24) at 1 p.m., at O'Shaughnessy Stadium in St. Paul, Minn. North Central faces Washington (Mo.) in a nonconference game next Saturday at 7 p.m. in St. Louis, Mo.
