Women's Soccer 9/28/05 -- Augsburg 1, Macalester 1 (2OT)

BOXSCORE

MINNEAPOLIS (9/28/05) -- Meghan Garrity (So., Walled Lake, Mich.) put Macalester College ahead with a rebound shot in the 84th minute, but Augsburg College's Emily Anderson * (Jr., Hudson, Wis.) provided the equalizer in the 88th minute, as the teams played to a 1-1 overtime tie in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's soccer game on Wednesday night at Augsburg's Edor Nelson Field.

With the draw, Augsburg moves to 6-0-3 overall, 3-0-1 in MIAC play, and continues the best unbeaten streak to start a season in the history of its women's soccer program, now at nine games. The previous best unbeaten start to a season was five games (4-0-1) in the 1997 season.

Meanwhile, Macalester, the No. 4-ranked team in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America/Adidas Division III national rankings, moves to 7-0-1 overall, 2-0-1 in MIAC play. Macalester is the top-ranked team in the latest NSCAA Division III Central Region rankings, with Augsburg among teams receiving votes but out of the top 10 in the region.

After a scoreless majority of regulation, Garrity provided the first goal of the game after a blast by Annie Borton (Jr., Berkeley, Calif.) that hit the crossbar. The rebound deflected to Garrity, who stroked a shot past Augsburg goalkeeper Maggie DeGroot (Fr., Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha West HS) to the far corner with 6:31 left in the second half.

But Augsburg pressed forward, and Anderson continued her scoring streak on a scramble in front of the net. Nora Austin * (Sr., St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) served a free kick from the right side, and as the ball squirted loose in the penalty box, Anderson slammed it home in front of the net for the equalizer with 2:50 remaining in regulation time.

Anderson has scored all of Augsburg's goals in conference play -- six -- and has a four-game goal-scoring streak. She has scored either a goal or assist in the last eight games in a row for the Auggies.

Augsburg had five shots in the two overtime periods, compared to Macalester's one, but could not capitalize on its opportunities to score in extra time.

Macalester outshot Augsburg by a 26-18 margin, including a 16-5 advantage in the second half. Borton had five shots for the Scots, with Amy Hutchinson (So., Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) contributing four shots and Meghan Leahey (Sr., Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS) and Marisa Gustafson (Fr., Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS) firing three shots apiece.

Augsburg's Anderson had five shots, with Millie Suk * (Sr., Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) contributing four and Jackie Keller (So., Traverse City, Mich./Traverse City West HS) contributing three.

Jenny Lee (Fr., Circle Pines, Minn./Centennial HS) had five saves in goal for the Scots, while Augsburg's DeGroot had nine saves.

Macalester returns to MIAC play with a home game against Bethel on Saturday (10/1) at 7:30 p.m. Augsburg returns to action with an MIAC game against St. Catherine next Wednesday (10/5) at 7:30 p.m. at Edor Nelson Field.
