Women's Soccer 10/10/06 -- Concordia-Moorhead 3, Augsburg 2

MOORHEAD, Minn. (10/10/06) -- Rachel Lewis scored two goals, including the game-winner with 2:45 left in the second half, giving the Concordia College-Moorhead women's soccer team a 3-2 victory over visiting Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest Tuesday afternoon at the Jake Christiansen Athletic Complex.
Felicia Faison (So., Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) and
Whitney Holman (Fr., New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) scored for Augsburg College, now 7-4-2 overall, 4-2-1 in league play. Faison scored an unassisted goal in the 44th minute, while Holmantied the game at 2-2 with a goal from
Emily Anderson * (Sr., Hudson, Wis.) in the 64th minute.
Concordia is now 10-2-1 overall and a league-leading 7-0-1 in MIAC play. The Cobbers are currently ranked No. 5 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Central regional poll.
"It was another heartbreaking loss for our team today," said Augsburg head coach
Mike Navarre. "Once again, we played good soccer against a top team in the region, only to give up an unfortunate and unnecessary goal in the final minutes."
Concordia outshot Augsburg by a 20-6 margin, but Augsburg goalkeeper
Maggie DeGroot (So., Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha West HS) claimed five saves. Britt Reiersgord claimed two saves for the Cobbers.
Concordia opened the scoring in the 15th minute, as Lewis scored from Suzy Grabko. The Cobbers gave up their first goal in MIAC play in the 44th minute, as Faison scored her first goal of the season off a corner kick scramble. The goal broke a string of 693:54 consecutive shutout time in league play for the Cobbers.
The Cobbers retook the lead in the 59th minute, as Morgan Bain scored from Grabko. But Holman's goal tied the game five minutes later. Lewis notched the game-winner from Miriam Lombardozzi in the 88th minute.
Augsburg returns to MIAC play on Friday (10/13) at 8 p.m. with a home game against St. Mary's at Edor Nelson Field. Concordia travels to St. Paul to face Macalester on Saturday (10/14) at 2:30 p.m.
"Although our aspirations for an MIAC championship were dealt a serious blow today, I remain proud of our team and excited about the rest of our season," Navarre said. "There is a lot of fight left in us."
