MINNEAPOLIS (11/17/06) --
Critter Nagurski * (Sr., International Falls, Minn.) and
A.J. Hau (Fr., Fort Collins, Colo.) had a goal and assist apiece, leading the Augsburg College men's hockey team to its first victory of the season, a 4-2 triumph over St. Mary's University in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest Friday night at the Augsburg Ice Arena.
After getting a goal from Nagurski in the final second of play in the first period, the Auggies scored three goals in the second period to pull away from the Cardinals. Both teams are now 1-4-0 overall, and it was the first MIAC contest for both teams. The teams conclude the MIAC series on Saturday (11/18) at 7:05 p.m. at the SMU Ice Arena in Winona, Minn.
Nagurski scored at the 19:59 mark of the first period, on assists from
Aaron Johnson * (Sr., Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) and
Tom Doyle (Sr., St. Paul, Minn./Como Park HS).
The Auggies added to the lead in the second period, as
Shawn Bakke (Sr., New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) scored from Nagurski and
Chad Georgell * (Sr., North Pole, Alaska/Fairbanks Lathrop HS) at the 5:27 mark of the second period, and Hau scored his team-leading third goal of the season on a shorthanded tally from
Ben Bradbury (So., Winnipeg, Manitoba/Vincent Massey Collegiate HS) at the 9:49 mark.
St. Mary's cut into the lead with a goal from Anthony Bohn (Fr., Spring Hill, Fla.) from Kevin Eidsmo (Jr., Chanhassen, Minn.) at the 15:21 mark, but 51 seconds later on the power play, Augsburg's
Brett Way (So., Grand Ledge, Mich.) scored from
Dan Leopold (Jr., Afton, Minn./Stillwater HS) and Hau.
The Cardinals got a shorthanded goal from Eric Dahl (Fr., St. Cloud, Minn.), on an assist from Cullum Buetow-Staples (Sr., Arden Hills, Minn.) with 1:49 left in the third period.
Augsburg outshot St. Mary's by a 24-20 margin in the game.
Andy Kent (So., Lakeville, Minn.) collected 18 saves for the win for Augsburg. Dan Smith (Jr., Rochester, Minn.) had 20 saves in a losing effort for the Cardinals.
