ST. CLOUD, Minn. (12/9/06) -- Augsburg College claimed one champion and 10 individual placewinners at the competitive St. Cloud State University Husky Open, held Saturday at Halenbeck Hall. No team results were kept at the open meet.
Jeremy Anderson (Jr., Thief River Falls, Minn.), the top-ranked wrestler in the latest NCAA Division III national rankings at 157 pounds, swept through his four matches to win the title, including a 3-0 decision over Brandon Girtz of Minnesota State Mankato in the finals. He did not give up a point in his four matches, winning two matches by major decision and claiming a 1:56 pin.
At 149,
Jared Evans (Sr., Blue Earth, Minn./Blue Earth Area HS), the No. 4-ranked wrestler nationally, finished second. He won three matches, including a 17-1 technical fall, before dropping an overtime decision to Jason Rhoten of Minnesota State Mankato, ranked No. 3 in Division II, in the championship match.
Paul Bjorkstrand (So., Burnsville, Minn.), who moved into the Division III national rankings for the first time with a No. 8 ranking at 133 pounds, finished second in his weight class. He won three matches before falling 7-3 to Jeff Pfaffinger of Minnesota State Mankato, ranked No. 5 in Division II, in the finals.
Andrew Neumann (Sr., Somerset, Wis.), ranked No. 4 nationally at heavyweight, finished second in his class, claiming a technical fall and major decision among his three victories.
At 141,
Quincy Osborn (Jr., Grand Rapids, Minn.), ranked No. 2 in Division III, finished third in his weight class. He had two pins and a major decision among his four victories.
Robbie Gotreau (Jr., Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS), ranked No. 6 nationally at 184, finished third in his weight class, claiming a major decision and technical fall among his four victories. Jaime Rocha (Jr., Santa Maria, Calif./Righetti HS) placed third for the Auggies at 125, with a pin and major decision among his four wins. His lone loss was to Nick Smith of Minnesota State-Mankato, ranked No. 2 in Division II.
Brandon Klukow (So., Albert Lea, Minn.) and
Dustin Monte (So., Santa Maria, Calif./Righetti HS) shared fifth place for the Auggies at 165, while
Andy Witzel (Fr., Fulda, Minn.) placed fifth at heavyweight.
Augsburg also sent 10 White Team (junior varsity) wrestlers to the Dick Walker Invitational at Wartburg College (Iowa) on Saturday.
Dominic Dvorak (So., Belle Plaine, Minn./Holy Family HS-Scott West) had the top individual record among the Auggies, going 4-2 at 149 pounds.
Augsburg returns to action on Dec. 28-29, competing at the Sunshine Open tournament in Lakeland, Fla.
