CHANDLER, Ariz. (3/20/06) --
Troy Deden (Sr., Northfield, Minn.) had four hits, including two doubles, and drove in two runs on the day, as the Augsburg College baseball team scored a doubleheader sweep of Midland Lutheran College (Neb.) at the Greater Phoenix Invitational on Monday at the Snedigar Complex in the Phoenix suburb of Chandler.
Augsburg, now 6-1-1 on the season, won the first game 4-2 and the second game 10-1. Midland Lutheran is now 14-8.
Deden and
Jeff Stomberg (So., Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) had two hits apiece in the first game, with both picking up doubles. Stomberg drove in two runs, while
Mark Bauer (Jr., Hastings, Minn.) and
Brian Bambenek (Jr., St. Charles, Minn.) also drove in runs in the first game.
With the game tied at 2-2, Augsburg scored twice in the bottom of the sixth inning to take the lead to stay.
Darren Ginther (Sr., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) picked up the pitching win for the Auggies in the first game striking out two, with
Tyler Kraft (Jr., Savage, Minn./Burnsville HS) scoring the save in relief.
In the second game, Augsburg exploded for 16 hits and took advantage of five Midland Lutheran errors. Eleven different Auggies had hits in the game, with Deden,
Matt Johnson (Jr., Plymouth, Minn./Osseo HS), Stomberg, Bambenek and
Mike Zaun (So., Mendota Heights, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) collecting two hits apiece. Ginther and Deden had doubles for the Auggies.
Evan Almeroth (Sr., Coon Rapids, Minn./Meadow Creek HS) picked up the pitching win in the second game, striking out two in five innings of work.
Josh Remme (Sr., Faribault, Minn.) pitched in relief. The two limited Midland Lutheran to just four hits in the second game.
Augsburg returns to action at the Greater Phoenix Invitational on Tuesday (3/21) with a 12 p.m. doubleheader against Johns Hopkins (Md.) at the Snedigar Complex in Chandler.
