Bobby Hager (Fr., Forest Lake, Minn.) went 3-for-5 with two doubles and three runs batted in, leading Augsburg College in a 15-12, nonconference loss to Hamline University at the Greater Phoenix Invitational on Wednesday at Gene Autry Stadium in the Phoenix suburb of Mesa.
Dusty Hinz (Fr., Richfield, Minn.) went 3-for-5 with five runs scored and a double for the Auggies, now 7-3-1 on the season. Head coach
Keith Bateman gave several of the team's young players and reserves a chance to start in the nine-inning, nonconference game against Augsburg's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rival. The game was added for both teams on Wednesday after rainouts early in the event.
Hamline built a 5-1 lead after two innings and had 11 hits in the game, also taking advantage of seven Augsburg errors. Just eight of the 15 runs scored in the game were earned against three Augsburg pitchers. Augsburg came back with four runs in the seventh inning to cut the lead to 12-11, but Hamline scored three runs in the eighth to maintain the lead.
Andrew Bennett went 2-for-4 with five RBI in the game for the Pipers, while Evan Vail drove in two runs on two hits.
Tim Wahl (Jr., Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) had two hits, including a double, and
Mike Zaun (So., Mendota Heights, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) had three RBI and a triple in the contest.
Chris Schroeder (Jr., Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Washington HS) struck out two in four innings of pitching for the Auggies, with
Eric Weber (Jr., Hastings, Minn.) striking out two and
Nate Jackson (Jr., Richfield, Minn.) striking out three in relief.
Andrew Seymour struck out four to pick up the win for Hamline.
Augsburg returns to action at the Greater Phoenix Invitational on Thursday (3/23) at 11 a.m., with a doubleheader against defending NCAA Division III national champion Wisconsin-Whitewater.
